Crime Thailand Cracks Down on Dangerous ‘Zombie Pod’ Vape Drug

THAILAND - Thai authorities are stepping up efforts against the misuse of etomidate, an intravenous anaesthetic, to combat its inclusion in hazardous vape products called “zombie pods”. Previously, doctors only used etomidate for medical purposes, but its illegal mixing in e-cigarettes has prompted action.

 

Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr Withid Sariddeechaikool, noted a rise in its use among vapers, particularly in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Concern has grown over the potential addiction and health risks associated with these products, which are now emerging in Thailand.

 

To tackle this issue, etomidate will be classified as a Psychotropic Substance Category 2 starting on 27th July. This reclassification aims to curb illegal use and distribution, carrying severe penalties for possession or sale. The repercussions for possession include up to seven years’ imprisonment and fines of up to 700,000 baht, with harsher penalties imposed on sellers.

 

Dr Withid has advised medical institutions to stock up on etomidate before the new regulations create potential supply shortages. PoUponimplementation, the anaesthetic will only be available through the FDA, ensuring tighter control over its distribution.

 

As the crackdown takes effect, the FDA is serious about preventing any loopholes in the misuse and distribution of such substances. This step underscores Thailand's commitment to public health safety and its alignment with international standards against substance abuse.
