The Thumbs Down Syndrome

IMO it's used by stalkers, and people who don't agree with the post, but are too gutless to post their reasons for disagreeing

Exactly, that's what I posted here many times. 🤩

How about this???....putting a thumbs down  automatically opens a text box into which you must post a response of no less than twenty words.....otherwise the forum is locked for you.

Could your quote not be taken as BAD and so deserves a Thumb Down?

Under that context, then that emoji shouldn’t exist due to its subjective contradiction that causes hurt feelings by those who have worn out their report button.

I thought the blue one meant I had a hard on and the red one meant I was limp.

"No politics" would remove 50% of ASEAN's content.

What criteria do you use to determine what a problem poster is?

Posting short replies, but many of them.

Starting too many topics every week.

Posting many replies as fast as they can type.

Disrespecting moderators, or breaking forum rules.

Giving thumbs down on multiple posts in a thread without any other participation.

After this emoji was introduced here at AN, I found it appearing in a most surprising, confusing & irrelevant forms.

It would be great if someone with a knowledge of psychology, explain how and why this is so prevalent? Perhaps a misunderstood emoji?

I think they are just pathetic examples of humanity

Thumbs down are now hidden from view who posts them, is a protection for those maga members.

When I give a thumbs down to a cult member, it usually disappears of it's own

"...is a protection for those maga members".

"When I give a thumbs down to a cult member, it usually disappears of it's own"

Nonsense, both of them.  Members do not have the facility to remove other members' opinions/posted emojis.

How can you possibly know that... do you have access to AN's database?   Other posters opinions on your comments are "grudges" and they are "idiots"?   Some may suggest that you should rein in that apparent arrogance.

19 judgements (thumb down) within a minute? And that in different threads?

I reckon those emoji-sickos can't express themselves in words.

In other Blogs it's called "stalking"

I'd suggest the forum introduces a 'no politics' rule.

And put all new posters and problem posters on the 'all posts moderated before publication', which would effectively prevent all trolls, by restricting their ability to fight/argue/react to other posters in realtime.

If you haven't noticed, political posts and troll post are promoted on the right-hand side of the forum as hot "Topics" and "Most Popular."
Post something that is of significant social commentary and the post gets buried and essentially shadow-banned. It provides you with a window into what AN means to consider to be important:  bob smith, Lewie London, SoCal1990, GammaGobulin and the various "bob smith" cutouts whose posts are immediately highlighted as "popular" and are given precedence over everything else of substance. This forum lives on bickering, trolling, tosh, and twaddle - in my humble opinion.

All these emojis are made for those who want to hide their AN identity.

They are cowards to stand to their opinion.

Nobody needs emojis.

Maybe you can remember the time there weren't any? What did you do? Writing. Easy as that

Emojis have been there for many years, you'd have to go back a long way to the time that there weren't any...if there was, indeed, ever such a time.

Thanks, I said that already in this thread. Good to repeat

And still you have absolutely no idea who they are but you keep banging on that you do!   Have you considered that, just perhaps, your comments justified the reaction?

Its a passive aggressive revenge outlet for people you have disagreed with on AN....I have a good idea who my "post trailing thumbs down moron" is that does mine....like I care...others say he is a complete knucklehead as well...which he is.

He'd lick Vladmir Putins balls if possible.

Well, if you would only read my posts in this thread only. You didn't.

If you would your question would be obsolete

Well Lou, perhaps because, to those of us not on the spectrum, its bloody obvious.

Which "spectrum" are you not on?  It is not the bloody obvious, at all, it's the bloody speculation.

I read every post that I comment on and I still think that you should not, arrogantly, assume that your posts would never deserve the emojis that they receive.

They will put it on posts they don't even read, they will put it on posts as they appear......I had ten or more thumbs down go on posts the other day all within 3 mins.

Watch the thumbs down go on this post.....555

There's a good reason why YouTube removed thumbs down from public view on November 10, 2021... and people in this forum are starting to realise there's no good reason to display it. It's used mainly by stalkers for purposes of stalking. The laughing emoji should go too. In fact, the place was a lot more civil before emojis were introduced. If someone didn't like or agree with a post, they had to make the effort of explaining why.

This forum lives on bickering, trolling, tosh, and twaddle

The original internet use of "troll" in the late 1980s and early 1990s referred to someone who intentionally posted provocative, inflammatory, or off-topic messages in online forums, like Usenet, to disrupt discussions and provoke emotional reactions. The term drew from the fishing technique of "trolling," where bait is dragged to lure fish, and possibly the mischievous troll of folklore. It described deliberate acts to annoy or derail, distinct from mere disagreement or spam, of which has been preformed by users here on all levels, top to bottom which feeds itself. The use of the word troll has become an expression of its own definition. “You troll” is now a troll expression to bait and diminish on what is supposed to be a civil platform. Quite the charade.

That must be why there is a publicly viewable "Thumbs down" facility on YouTube videos today!

I think the pathetic examples of humanity are the grown men who get so upset over a small collection of coloured pixels.

Emojis of some description have been there for many years, if not since the beginning of the forum.

The only one who is arrogant is you. You just proved by chosing words as if you would be the superior here.

Just to remind you: you're not.

Btw you repeated some of my posts as new post of your's. And you will honestly tell me you read the posts you're commenting ??? No.

Anyway, this discussion is going nowhere. I will end it here.

2 recent posts got multiple thumbs down. I like it better than nothing. Means someone thought about your post and disagreed rather than thought nothing.

they changed the emoji' options a while ago more than once. they had a confused emoji which was way more accurate if used properly as some post just dont make sense the way they are written, so confused emoji is appropriate. It could be bad context, poor language or just confused statements. too many cry babies complained so the site took it off. poor judgement in my opinion. They also used to score the emojis attributed but cry babies had them take that off too. Then they added the broken heart emoji which to me is completely useless. Ive even been flagged  for "emoji" abuse over the course of a thread????? why have them if you cant use them.

Sadly you can post an absolute undeniable proof yet there will still be an idiot giving the thumbs down as I expect there will be for this post. TROLLS. Remove the anonymizer function and I'll guarantee we will see >90% reduction.

You think that's just possibly because of the number of views/comments it doesn't get?  The forum is a for-profit business, nothing more, after all.

Commenting on the same lines as you does not mean that I am just "repeating some of your posts", we are allowed to have similar opinions to those already posted.  Every post that I comment on I read, yes.

I would like to recommend that we have a Middle-Finger Emoji. There would be less confusion over its meaning, and I have the utmost confidence AN members would use it responsibly.

I have always said that they need  dk head emoji, but in reality it would probably be used more than the thumbs down.

Thats exactly right and part of a news organization hense the over abundance of "news" topics posted.
