Because it is the responsible thing to do

especially as full insurance cover is very cheap when placed against the cost of medical treatment without insurance.

Why should others contribute to those costs when the cheap Charlie who travels without it doesn't give a smokin turd about it or the reputations of those who do.

If you are a traveller you have a responsibility and a duty to yourself and every other traveller but of course as has been espoused by one or two others ahead of my reply there will always be some moron who believes it is everyone else’s duty to take care of them when their personal s—-t hits the fan.

Well said,

And it's a shame on those who come out with stupid comments like ' Why pay for insurance? ' People who promote this type of selfishness are cretins.

Speaking of which, I just paid my renewal this morning. Did I want to? No, I didn't. Why did I pay it?

IT'S THE RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO AND IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN GIRLY BARS, DISCOS, WEED AND SINGHA BEERS.

I bet you haven't tried to talk sense into a 28 year old boy.

And you think they will listen to a random insurance broker?

If anything parents should bring their children up properly.

Most leave their brains at the airport anyway

It is why I am proud to be a Brit.

We don’t need it. We know if we get in a bit of strife our countrymen will dig deep if it is needed.

Much better than relying on the greedy insurance companies who are only interested in profits.

You're an Aussie Malky boy, or should I say an Aussie wih Alzheimer's? You seem to keep forgetting your own nationality......

Are you on the right thread, chap...?....

As he'll now be subject to NHS care shouldn't they do a Gofundme page to bring him back to Thailand,  to a proper hospital? Like Bangkok Hospital.

I wish I knew how to make tourists to Thailand buy travel insurance before travelling.

I used to pay a modest premium for travel medical insurance when I came Thailand as a tourist.  Never needed it but thought it was money well spent.  I never understand why Brits don't don't take this easy and inexpensive step when they travel to a country where there is no reciprocal agreement with the NHS, which is most countries in the world.

The thing is that at 29 like all at that age think they are bullet proof and never get sick . Not gonna have a stroke or heart attack and getting travel / medical insurance would be the last thing on their mind as they book their overseas holiday and when something happens they rely on everyone to help them.I woner if the travel agents should advise them better when they book.

Should be mandatory to enter Thailand for one . Sure there are many other countries as risky or far more risky

Very strange story, even in Thailand brain surgery would be way more than £31,000 !

Maybe smaller brains are less ?

Great scam. £31,000 in your back arse pocket. Nice work. Totally made up.

At 29, he thought he was impervious to anything happening to him. It would be interesting to hear ... the rest of the story. It probably started with him saying "Watch this!". I'm sitting here at 67 having flash backs to 29 and the stupid stuff I did that could have gone absolutely wrong! 100% proof that God takes care of stupid people!

Can't have been too bad if 31K paid the bill & got him repatriated? Medical team on board, modified seating like Jodi in Flying High?🙃🙃

Yeah I thought the bill seemed quite cheap...

I wish Thailand would insist on valid travel insurance before the goons left their home countries.

If you can’t afford it cut your cloth accordingly and have a week in Scarborough , dreamers

Simple, check at immigration to see they have the documents appertaining to insurance and if they do not then send them home the airlines will soon deal with it if they have fly them home for free.

Depends on where the brain is located, shoe leather is cheap, for others a condom covers it, but both items wear out leaving some vulnerable to brain damage.

Travel insurance or not glad the young man is back home.

So 3 pages all about insurance. And not any information at all  about what happened???. How about a special topic for insurance and leave topics for what actually happened

There's at least one monthly advert, sponsor thread pushing insurance.  How do you miss that ?

Insurance & legal services posted regularly.  Not exactly disguised.

I'd bet dollars to donut holes that whatever happened, it's excluded under most travel policies.

I still click on "accept the coverage" on the wild chance that I'll actually be covered.  But in about 6 events over 25 years where I filed a claim, all 6 have been denied.  Fortunately, they've all been small claims.  But I have pretty much zero confidence that they'd cover a whopper.

Having been treated for a month and a half already in Thailand, unlikely he needed any of that to fly home. Had he, that alone would have run to 20-30K,
