Maybe it's a stupid question but I know I will find the answer here

Next year, I'd like to take a Thai citizen on a 15-day vacation to Europe with me. The itinerary would also include Switzerland, the UK, and Italy. My question is: the initial visa would be for Switzerland. To allow her to travel to Italy and the UK and then return to Switzerland, do I need to apply for a new visa for the other two countries? Thank you.

The Thai citizen can apply for the Schengen visa on her own, personally I don't think it makes much difference. When I did my wife's last year the submission was as any other tourist, unlike the days of family members. However the success rate for Thai tourists to the EU is fairly high.

The UK is a different matter altogether and is quite difficult for a Thai on their own. The system focuses on the basis of "reason to return" and that can take a lot of convincing for younger unmarried Thais.

Unless you have some compelling reason to go to the UK I would suggest you give it a miss otherwise it could very well upset your plans.

Your Schengen visa will cover Switzerland and Italy, but you'll need a separate visitors visa for the UK.

  • I had thought about it, but unfortunately Switzerland is not bordered by any sea.

Don't forget that the Schengen visa is valid for one entry only. If you manage to get a UK visa, you can't return to Switzerland on the same visa.

I will give it a try: if it will no easy, no UK. Thanks again.

Might want to think about UK first up on itinerary. Don't know but might ease the way showing the Schengen Visa following request to visit UK first ...

There are several VHS global offices in Bangkok, and when you apply online, you get a receipt when you booking time where to meet.

OP, you can obtain a Schengen Visa however thinking you have not outlined any of details of the "Thai friends" history.

Has she been to Europe previously.

Is she a gf that you want to take on a holiday.

First time I ever took my Thai partner to Australia the application for a single entry tourist visa was FAR from straight forward.

Such things as length of relationship, compelling reason for her to return to Thailand etc etc.

Some posts in this thread seem frivolous and you will find application process anything but that.

Schengen visa is quite straight forward if you have history together, and you being a guarantor. If she apply on behalf of herself only, or no previous history together that she can prove, there is another story.

There about 30 countries in the Schengen area, not all in one, or even 2 offices.

I did Germany last year, big office with over 30 desks dealing with I think 5 countries.

I think Swiss was one of them, but maybe not.

Schengen Visas can be issued for single or multiple entries, and various validity periods from the length of the intended stay up to a five year validity, though there is a limit how long a visa can stay in the Schengen Area.

Although I'm not an expert in this area, for the travel you described above, I would assume anyone with a Thai passport would need a visa for all three countries.  And they might have to have a multiple-entry visa for Switzerland.

You're right.  There is definitely paperwork involved in applying for a Schengen visa.  My Thai spouse just applied for one for a trip we are taking in November.  Our first stop is Spain so we applied with the Spanish Embassy using BTS--the office was just a short walk from the Terminal 21 subway stop, using the walkway that went right to the building.

For the application we needed, from memory:

Cover letter explaining the trip's purpose, where you will be going, etc.

Copies of round trip plane tickets

Copies of hotel bookings for trip

Copies of bank statements and also letter from the bank

Copies of any previous Schengen visas

Thailand employment documentation

Schengen visa application filled out

There may have been some other things required but the above is what I remember.  The Schengen visa service you use should have a list of what you need to prepare.  We just heard that it has been processed--that took about 15 days.

You got that bit right anyway. 😉

I believe you need to apply for a Schengen visa at the VFS office of the FIRST country of entry. That should allow subsequent entry to other Schengen countries on the itinerary.

Maybe the UK visit should be between the Italy trip and the final repatriation entry to Switzerland, the third stop on the itinerary? This itinerary presented for a UK visit visa at VFS would indicate two Schengen entries before the UK visit, followed by the necessary departure from UK to Switzerland in order to return to Thailand.

Not quite, it's where you're going to be spending the most time.  If it's equal amounts of time then it's the first country, as explained upthread.

Ah, ok, thanks for that clarification.

Thanks for the clarification. She's not my girlfriend, just a friend. She's already been to Sweden and Canada before Covid.

Not to rain on your parade but depending on the Thai background it's not easy to either visa. So just be prepared for a let down at least one of them will say no. Unless she has a solid job and can provide a lot of proof of returning to Thailand. (unless you married which by the sounds of it you are not)
