In response to heightened tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Ubon Ratchathani Airport has implemented stringent security measures. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced the new protocols, including a ban on drones near the airport and an increase in security patrols.

These directives were issued during the Minister's visit on Tuesday to assess the airport's progress towards becoming an international aviation hub in Northeast Thailand. Ubon Ratchathani province shares a border with Cambodia in the Nam Yuen and Nam Khun districts, a detail that underscores the importance of the heightened security.

Danai Ruengsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), highlighted the technological upgrades at the airport. A new video conferencing system now connects the airport to the DoA's central security monitoring. This ensures immediate military aid can be summoned if necessary, vital for situations requiring swift evacuations or crisis management.

Ubon Ratchathani Airport, capable of managing 1,050 passengers per hour, services approximately 3 million travellers annually. Its runway, extending 3 kilometres, supports up to six flights each hour, while the aircraft aprons accommodate up to 230 planes carrying between 180 and 350 passengers daily.

Presently, the airport hosts an average of nine domestic flights from Don Mueang Airport and two from Suvarnabhumi Airport. In a bid to further enhance security, the airport is acquiring a dual-view X-ray system, amongst other advanced security measures.

These developments are part of a broader strategy to ensure passenger safety and secure the airport's role as a new international gateway, amidst rising regional uncertainties.

He's a bit behind the curve.

Mind-boggling that they're thinking of this only now, shouldn't drones ALWAYS be banned nearby airports?

Military drones are in operation.......🤭

Ubon airport is also home to the Thai Royal Air Force. There is a large military housing camp/base, and fighter planes based there..☺️

If that airport can handle only 1,050 passenger an hour, then replace the operator. The airport is - to be timid - HUGE and has a much higher capacity. Latter not needed as there is mostly commercial traffic on a domestic scale only.

The runway could accommodate serious widebody aircraft - as a relict from the Indochina war. No lack of self-confidence refers to Ubon Ratchathani INTERNATIONAL airport except, that there are no international flights nowhere.

Today completely oversized it will serve the destination goals for years to come; the security issue is another subject but, in this context, I believe it has to do with "instigating fear" rather than be a factual piece of news 8-)

. . . . . two from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

4 daily flights to/from BKK.  2 x Thai Airways and 2 x Thai Vietjet.
