BANGKOK— In a decisive statement on Thursday, Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayakul reaffirmed his confidence in Paetongtarn Shinawatra's ability to withstand the constitutional court case against her. The case has generated significant political tension, but Phumtham insisted that the ruling Pheu Thai Party has no need for a fallback strategy.

The court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on 29th August, regarding accusations levelled by 36 senators that Paetongtarn breached ethical standards during a phone conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen. They claim the conversation showed undue favour towards Cambodia, raising national security concerns.

Phumtham, however, stood firm in his belief that Paetongtarn had maintained her integrity throughout the interaction. He underscored the Pheu Thai Party's trust in her sincerity, emphasising that the conversation in question posed no threat to Thailand's national security.

Addressing the senators’ allegations, Phumtham assured that any perceived implications on national security had been thoroughly debunked by the government's actions. During recent border disputes with Cambodia, he highlighted, the Thai government proved its impartial stance, treating Cambodia strictly as an adversary when necessary.

As speculation mounts regarding potential outcomes, Phumtham dismissed any notions of Paetongtarn resigning before the court's decision, stating that such an option had never been considered. Confidence remains high within the party that everything will align with democratic principles and proceed smoothly.

Additionally, Phumtham expressed no concern over the court's decision to potentially reduce the number of defence witnesses from five to two. Paetongtarn plans to present her own testimony, supported by the National Security Council, to convincingly argue that her actions were not detrimental to the nation.

Phumtham acknowledged the public’s diverse opinions on the matter, stressing the importance of Paetongtarn's responsibility to clarify the situation to the court. He asserted that there was no need for a contingency plan, as the political process would naturally follow its course.

In a period fraught with political complexity, Phumtham’s unwavering support for Paetongtarn sends a clear message of confidence from the ruling party. As the country awaits the verdict, the assurance of democratic adherence remains a crucial aspect of ongoing discussions.

With the decision looming, the nation watches closely, aware that the outcome will inevitably shape the political landscape moving forward. The Pheu Thai Party’s stance indicates a firm belief in justice taking its course without any hidden plot.

The spotlight remains on Paetongtarn and the constitutional court as the date approaches, with the political atmosphere charged with anticipation and the public eye fixated on the unfolding events.

Well he would say that wouldn't he.

Pretty sure no one in his position would be stupid enough to say anything different.

The only argument might be that he shouldn't be saying anything at all.

Most of the times the court verdicts in favor of those in power, however there is so much anti Thaksin in the country at the moment that I hope that the court will decide against her and remove her from office and ban her and family for life.... I know I am dreaming but it would do so good for the Thai people to get new elections with a young generation with idea's and a vision, and limited power for the army and elite, to bring prosperity for everyone, instead of only now wealth for the rich and superrich, the all corrupted officers.

They always express confidence, right until they get their ass handed to them (again).

Of course he must express optimism, especially as he owes his position to Paetongtan's father.

The government may have done the right thing since the conflict erupted, but that doesn't excuse Paetongtan's craven obsequience to Hun Sen, plus her badmouthing General Boonsin to the Cambodian strongman in that notorious phone call

If she survives this case, then the Shinawats are truly invincible.

Piece of advice Phumtham, if you have a red face, avoid wearing a red jacket, it's only amplifying your looking like an alcoholic. You are Thai and a politician, image is the only thing that counts.

My bet has always been that she will win , the status que will prevail for a while at least.

Even if she is found 'not guilty', which I don't think will happen, she has lost what little respect she had and would be powerless as PM.

Her inexperience and lack of knowledge imperiled the Kingdom. In all honesty, she should have resigned, but that would have required character and courage, both of which are foreign concepts to her.

Guess he got his envelope already.

Your key statement is those in power.  Thaksin is not in power.  He is where he is because those in ower had a choice PTP or MFP and chose PTP because they know they can dump them when they get tired

and yesterday it was reported

In an unprecedented political showdown, Thaksin Shinawatra is reportedly using his considerable influence and resources to protect his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, from an impending impeachment.

but to be fair ( clowns and balloons )   they did say     without any hidden plot.

obviously it's wide out in the open !

Its just a political witch hunt by the opposition & certain military aligned people, what a joke Thailand!!

From the photo, he definitely looks like an old fart establishment dinosaur about to become extinct!
