Your calculations are wrong,

My university educated middle manager daughter is paid 25kbht/ month.

Her 8 university graduate underlings are paid 15-17kbht/month.

Your calculations are wrong.

I had an office of 40 staff in Bangkok, all earning over 40k per month, with management 80k+

Even places like Dairy Queen are advertising full time roles for 15k a month

  • if this really gets implemented by 2027, then the many retired foreigners living in thailand who knowingly don’t follow the new tax laws (2024) can no longer use the excuse "but most thais also don’t

  • Mr Prayut , please come back. It gets worse and worse after the last election.

  • This will go down like a lead balloon

However scandalous it may be, it keeps the cost of living low compared with Western countries.

By 'scandalous' I was referring to the amount they pay locally-engaged staff at our Embassies, not in general.

So worse than I have seen advertised. Maybe only the bigger joints pay better. Lotus's was offering 12-15K a month (I think it was for cashiers who probably have only highschool or maybe some relevant technical diploma).

My niece (graduate) is Lotus area manager, 25kbht/month

This is a very ambitous (UNREALISTIC) target is an economy where most work is informal/unreported.

Thailand has 21 million workers in the informal labour sector, accounting for 52.3% of the country's overall workforce while only 19.1 million (47.7%) operate in the formal sector.

Of course they would.

Yawn....it's Bangkok....salaries are higher.

I bet half of them don't have jobs anymore.

That Lavaron guy who is proposing this is the same person who introduced the reinterpretation of the Revenue Code section on foreign remittances in 2023.  It has been a total bust and they are now desperately trying to revise this disastrous rule that didn't raise the incremental taxes Lavaron promised and choked off productive capital inflows that could have generated more domestic income and taxes.

Now he proposing at least another 27 million fruitless tax returns from low income earners who don't earn enough to pay tax in return for some unspecified level of handouts.  Most of these people are incapable of filing a tax return and certainly cannot pay for a tax advisor to do it, if they have little or no income.  They will have to go the RD and ask the ladies behind the counter to do it for them.  I seriously doubt they have the manpower to do this and it is uneconomical to hire more to process fruitless tax returns.

The PT government just lets the bureaucrats announce this nonsense and goes along with it, whereas bureaucrats should be implementing key tax policies, not formulating them publicly announce them, as if they are ministers.  In what Western countries would we see announcements like this from the permanent secretary for finance or the head of the RD, or even know their names.

You said "it's not that long ago". I questioned that, rightfully from your own post.

Tax clearance certificates for foreigners were abolished in about 1990.   In those days there wasn't a huge number of farangs on retirement and marriage visas who were living in Thailand long term without working.  For expat workers it was an inconvenience which prevented spur of the moment overseas trips but not insurmountable.

Since they are talking about getting all foreign tax residents file tax returns, this could be hugely inconvenient for foreigners living in Thailand long term but not currently filing tax returns.  Demanding certified copies of latest tax return will be no brainer for long term visa renewals and they could easily do the same as they do with WPs, i.e. set a minimum income declaration by nationality that you have tax on, regardless of whether you have that income or not.

Many old thais are not digitally literate

Think you could have posted many Thais are not digitally literate.

My point was Thailand could implement this tax system, but would many thais comply or be able to comply. Maybe we have to wait to see if this government survives first, to even be able to implement it.

I am surprised to see you post something that 'general' ......It would not take into account DTAs (like US SS) or savings per 162.

Unless they get really stupid (TIT :whistling:) I personally think that is unworkable.

Virtually any beneficial thing the Thai government gives the Thai people.. Expat farangs are excluded ....30 baht heath care, 20 baht rides on the sky train, 10,000 baht give away,Thai prices for National Parks etc etc etc...In a nut shell the government has never given expat farangs a single benefit that I can recall....

Its almost hilarious how when it came to taxes they were tripping over themselves to include the expat farangs.....lol.......They Seriously dont deserve a single baht in taxes from any expat....So there would be no reason to file taxes...

Expats with Work Permit (I.e. paying taxes) should get all those benefits, but get zero. Even have to queue with the tourists on arrival at Swampy.

The article mentioned "Thai citizens". Are you a citizen?

Noppe, but I stay here more than 180 days so I  am considered a taxpayer

Good luck with the people in my village who can not read or write (including some children.) These people manage to function perfectly well in their own life. Who will enforce it? More chance of lottery tickets being sold for the stated 80 baht rather than marked up 100 baht.🙃🙃

as far as i understand, the proposed new tax law starting in 2027 also aims to provide additional financial help and support to poorer people. once the elderly in the villages hear that they can receive money if they fill out the tax declaration, they will voluntarily go to the tax office to complete the declaration and apply for the financial support ...

you do not need to worry about that ...

But the government has refused to give even a hint at how much help they might give poor people....I could see it being as low as 100 baht a month...Which would hardly get even the poorest of people motivated to fill out tax forums..

Hell the elderly only get a whopping 500 baht a month now....

Dreaming. Have you ever lived in a slightly remote village (not a gated village in a city)? A tax office within 300-500k's? Financial help to poorer people? Grannie is still waiting for the promised 10,000 baht from years ago (& she is not alone.) Righto.🙃🙃

to my knowledge, every Amphore has a tax office ... older poor people will run for every bath they can get ... you should try to live in a remote village than you would know ....

There will be one sure place/location where enforcement becomes real... at airport departures.  Farang tourist and thai wife of 30+ years... she not having lived in Thailand nor ever worked salary in that whole married time (unless they expand the net to consider whatever the thai wife gets from hubby as a housewife). Mrs only appears on the blue book where she was born by the canal...

It will never happen
