Bank account on overstay

Featured Replies

Having opened a bank account with the appropriate visa, but now being on overstay, can this result in the account being blocked and closed? If you can no longer use it, can you regain access to the funds in the account before it's permanently closed?

The bank accounts aren't linked to immigration so the account will just continue unless the balance is too low

The real question is, do you intend to clear the overstay and continue to stay here or are you fixing to leave the country and never come back.

What is the end game of this because obviously staying in Thailand on overstay is not going to be a good long-term option

It is highly unlikely anything would happen to the account while you were on overstay and you should be able to go in and withdraw the funds and/or close the account if you wanted to.

The account have a debit card?

Use ATM to withdraw funds down to small amount.

Exit Thailand via air and clear your overstay..

1. If yes account has ATM then you can withdraw funds without attending a bank and presenting pp to teller.

2. Just explained

3. How can you clear overstay without exiting Thailand. Please explain.

You state this in reference to clearing overstay without exiting Thailand.

You stated similar "stuff" In thread May 30 here....

And again post "Can be done"

Without any explanation.

Not interested in tales.

Quite a few stories of people who need to visit their bank to show their visa and have their account blocked until they visit the bank and show proof.

Not directly, but if you lose access for any reason (e.g. ATM card expired, lost or damaged, app stopped working), you would not be able to restore access while on overstay. So the longer you're on overstay, the higher the risk that you will lose access to your bank account.

As mentioned by @FritsSikkink, there's also a chance that you're caught up in your bank's re-verification measures unrelated to your visa status in particular. If they call you in for a document check, you won't be able to undo them freezing your account while on overstay.

Will be able to get my money and let them close the account?

You mean after you've resolved your overstay? Yes. I hope you don't even consider walking into a bank and handing over your passport to them while still on overstay.

I mean during the overstay: if they don't unfrozen my account, can get my money and let them close it?

Already done twice when  had to update my details.

Your posts make little sense.

You are on overstay? Yes?

You have an ATM card? Yes?

Then what's the question. Withdraw the funds via ATM. Leave perhaps 100b .

No need to close the account.

Bank will eventually do that.

Clearly you don't plan to remain in Thailand despite your thread asking about PE visa

What would happen if he did that ?

More and more they will.

Not looking for visa more look for valid permission of stay stamp.

While not directly related... I read all the treads regarding checking into hotels.

Some guys posting they use TDL etc.

I discount much of that.

Wed checked into hotel Pattaya.

Reception first words.... "Passport"

After photocopy photo page she was looking over and over my (newish) pp.

Me: what are you looking for.

She: your visa stamp.

I located it for her. All good.

Current threads running about hospital wanting pp at reception or at banks or at hotels.

What's wrong with just providing pp.

Back to the OP, I would withdraw from ATM.

His situation is unclear. Cat and mouse game

When it is frozen, you can't do anything. Need to get it unfrozen first.

I wouldn't count on it. And as I wrote, I wouldn't risk handing over a passport that indicates you're on overstay to the bank.

Best case scenario, they are only interested in your passport for ID. But that's extremely unlikely if they've frozen your account.

Worst case scenario, they call the police. Also unlikely, but when you're on overstay, you really need to minimize your exposure and try to resolve it as soon as you can.

As your account isn't actually frozen yet, all that seems to be hypothetical? Better focus on the overstay first. Unless and until you resolve that, you'd be in a tough situation if any issues with banking arise.

Yes but not linked to Immigration hence message from bank not Immigration

What do you think will happen when the bank checks the visa and it is expired?

Unfreeze his account?

Are you not allowed a Thai bank account if you don't live in Thailand?

What about all the Chinese businessmen running factories in Thailand, but not living here full time, are their accounts to be frozen?

And the Burmese/Laos/Cambodians working in Thailand that have no passports and no VISAs, their accounts all frozen as well?

Are all those Chinese businessmen running factories in Thailand without a non b visa ?

I can't explain it any simpler, read it again

Businesses have business accounts. You don't have to live here full time when you have a yearly extension.

Doe have Burmese, Laos, Cambodian workers without a passport or visa have a bank account? Very much doubt it.

This is how I understand the procedure of overstaying:

Overstay and Imm catch you = Jail, fine, deportation and prohibited from returning for a number of years.
Overstay and leave Thailand voluntary = Fine and prohibited from returning for a number of years.

Best to leave via airport to clear up overstay.

500b per day up to max 20k baht + any ban penalty as per attached chart.

What I don't understand is if you have money in the bank why didn't you do a border jump to renew your visa?

can work for a while at least, this all makes no sense to me
