Phuket’s Tourism Hit Hard as Political Unrest Worries Investors

Thailand's political turbulence and ongoing border disputes are rattling Phuket's tourism sector, dampening investor confidence and stalling critical infrastructure projects, say local operators.

Bill Barnett, head of Phuket-based consultancy C9 Hotelworks, highlights that national policy disruptions have hit tourism stimulus and infrastructure funding. He warns that large public projects like Phuket’s expressway, light rail, and airport upgrade are lagging due to instability.

Concerns extend beyond Phuket, with key projects like the Eastern Economic Corridor’s high-speed rail and the entertainment complex bill needing clear direction. Additionally, a planned giveaway of 200,000 flights to international visitors is at risk of delay.

Comparing the situation, Barnett points out Vietnam's stable policies and proactive infrastructure development, including a high-speed railway linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This contrast highlights the political uncertainties creating a vacuum in Thailand, risking delays in border conflict resolution and strained Cambodian relations.

Once considered a safe haven, Thailand now faces wavering foreign confidence due to border disputes, deterring both tourists and long-term visitors. "Optimism for the year’s end has faded. "We're losing momentum, and it's concerning," Barnett states, reported the Bangkok Post.

Tourism arrivals could stagnate at last year’s 35.5 million, hindered by a sluggish Chinese market. The current low season is also underperforming compared to the same period last year. Looking to the high season, Phuket may see arrivals dip by 5% and hotel rates plummet over 10%.

Some tourists are opting for Vietnam, where luxury hotel rates are half those of Thailand. Amid these challenges, the Phist 2025 summit drew a record 1,300 attendees in Phuket. Next year, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council 2026 conference is set to take place in the province.

These events underscore Phuket’s continued appeal amidst a rocky political landscape and underline the need for stability to rejuvenate the tourism industry.
