Do you have Wi-Fi on your computer, I am assuming you do. If so try using that that.

1. Reboot.

2. Remove and install USB adapter.

Connect using the Ethernet/LAN port

or reinstall the USB adaptor drivers  but maybe the adaptor went bad.

Boot from a recovery USB stick and try to connect from there. This will rule out windows issues and prove it's a hardware problem if it fails.

On the basis that your desktop didn't come with a wi-fi adapter installed, it should have an ethernet port available. As suggested if  you have an ethernet cable availble you could try connecting directly to the router.

Re-installing the usb adapter may work  so worth a try.  A visit to the Device Manager may give a clue but may be a step too far.

You can go through a wide range of troubleshooting but if you're not really computer savvy it's probably best to take the desktop with wireless USB adapter to the nearest computer store and have them troubleshoot the problem.

The first thing I always do is reboot the PC, I do that before even asking anyone else, I then let the person I ask for help after rebooting the PC that I have rebooted the PC.

I have installed a sound bar, it is plugged into a USB port, I wonder if it is no coincidence the problem started with that.

Rebooting the PC is one of the first things I did.

Try uninstalling the soundbar then.

Yes, that could have caused it.

I sounds like you have a TP Link Wireless USB adapter plugged into one of your USB ports.  I'd suggest unplugging it.  Unplugging your sound bar, reboot your system, then plug your TP Link USB adapter back in.  You'll want to use a different USB slot.  If your using a USB hub, well - don't.  Leave a dedicated USB slot for your TP Link Wireless.

That does not work either.

What is an ethernet port?

Also when you restart the computer make sure you click 'restart' because it's a little different to a shutdown then press the power button.

It's kind of hidden but there are some 'fast boot' settings which can continue to keep drivers in memory - it's a form of hibernation.

Long story short - just click restart - not shutdown to be sure as you never know what it's up to 'under the hood'

This is an Ethernet port and an Ethernet cable.

Trash the USB adapter and install a proper WiFi/Bluetooth adapter.

I always do the unplug procedure. I unplug while all the gear is still on and then replug.

If not, call the tech support of your internet provider. They often have been of good help over the phone.

But don't tell them that the internet is working on other devices as that will give them an opening to brush you away.

You're going to have to find out what type of TP Link Wireless Adapter you have, find the driver for that model of TP Link Wireless Adapter that runs on whatever version of Windows you are running, and reinstall it.

Turn the internet modem / router off.  Unplug the wireless dongle.  Shut down the computer.  Turn the modem / router back on.  After a few minutes, turn your computer back on.  Insert the wireless dongle.  If no luck, try a different USB port.  This sequence might fix it.

I am assuming you have a modem / router in the property.  If it's a wireless dongle with a sim card in it, have you run out of credit?  Check your account.  Remove the sim and wipe it down and reinstall it.

WHY? What makes a dongle with both better than a USB only one.

If there's room in his PC, he should get a proper card.

The USB stick is the dongle. They are junk. Get a proper PCI card.

Why - Wireless USB adapters run fine as long as you have a correct driver.

What are you on about. USB Stick = Dongle. We all know that.

Read the last sentence of mine which you replied to.

Turn the WiFI OFF on your laptop and plug in the Stick, see if it works.

If it does, it's your PC settings somewhere. If it doesn't the Stick is probably buggered, but I doubt it. How old is the TP Link thing,

If the Op was computer saavy, he'd been using the built in Ethernet interface and not bothering with a USB Wireless adapter at all - no less buying and installing a PCI card - IF - he even has one available.  And? Wireless USB dongles work just fine as do range extenders.

Assuming you are connecting the router with an ethernet cable to your pc, the problem might be that the pc is trying to connect via WiFi which is causing the adapter/driver issue, which most likely means that you have a faulty cable and need a new ethernet cable.

They are junk that fry regularly and lose their drivers easily. Would not waste my time on them.

Does not work. I know what a hub is, but is an adapter another name for a hub?

It does have an Ethernet as there is an off button there but what is an Ethernet?
