Thailand Acts to Tackle Baht Surge Amid Trade Woes

So how are they going to tackle the baht surge ?

Even lower interest rates ?

Selling baht for other currencies ?

Borrowing more money for stupid projects and 10k handouts ?

Thailand's foreign currency and gold reserves are unusually high considering the size of its economy. Selling a chunk of such excessive reserves could easily devalue the baht, leading to higher exports, higher tourist numbers, and economic growth. Of course, the top 1% of society would cry foul as foreign villas and bank deposits would get more expensive (in baht)...

  • This closely resembles currency manipulation.

  • Perhaps a better title would be " Thailand doesn't act to curb baht rise!"

The Thai baht is far higher than it should be, much manipulation is required on the part of the authorities, and it's certainly one of the reasons why tourism is down in addition to many others. It's

You have it wrong way around. If Thailand sells a chunk of its foreign reserves, they are buying back Thai Baht, thus creating more demand for the Baht and thus increasing its value. The reason why Thailand has such a large foreign reserve is because the Bank of Thailand has been buying a lot of foreign currency to try to decrease the value of the Baht.

But why do they hold such large gold reserves, considering that...

"The baht has a much closer link to gold than other emerging Asian currencies, with the two prices having a correlation coefficient of about 0.53 over the past 90 days. A coefficient of 1 would mean they are moving in lockstep."

If the gold price goes up by another 20%, won't the dollar/baht exchange rate drop below 29? Imagine the effect on exports and tourism...

We can only hope ! 👍

I'm here on retirement visa, have a few million baht in the bank. I calm myself over exchange fluctuations by viewing baht and dollar on a seesaw: when baht goes up I can dip into Thai account. If dollar goes up (somehow) I can pull cash from US banks. I know all sorts of holes can be poked in this, but hey, what influence do we have on exchange rates?

Historically the Baht is not strong at all, but I guess it will soon participate in a race to the bottom. I remember when it was pegged at 25 Baht to one US dollar, for many years.

I remember when it was 20 baht to the dollar - 1968-1970

I wondered why no one was crying like a raped ape about the dollar dipping below 32 baht.

USD? I can do a Wise xfer at this moment and get 31.58 baht to the USD minus whatever small fee they charge. If you exchanged USD, the people doing the exchange cheated you badly.
