A political activist is taking significant steps to initiate legal proceedings against former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for allegedly securing an illegal transfer from prison to hospital in 2023. Nitithorn Lamluea, a political activist and lawyer, plans to lodge a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). This action follows a Supreme Court decision on Monday which stated that Thaksin orchestrated his transfer to avoid serving time in prison.

The case revolves around Thaksin’s transfer from Bangkok Remand Prison to Police General Hospital on 22 August 2023. According to the Supreme Court's ruling on Tuesday, Thaksin wrongfully cited chest pain and other illnesses to justify this move. He subsequently remained in the hospital until being paroled early in 2024, never completing a full day in prison despite his one-year sentence.

Nitithorn, who leads the Student and People’s Network for Thailand’s Reform, stated that his network has already filed a complaint against corrections and medical staff allegedly involved in aiding Thaksin. He was present at the Supreme Court during the ruling, demonstrating his seriousness about the matter. The court found Thaksin did not suffer from any severe or urgent medical condition warranting his swift transfer back to Thailand after 15 years of self-exile.

This development raises significant questions about the integrity of the legal and medical procedures involved. Experts are expressing concern over the implications for Thailand’s judicial system and its susceptibility to manipulation. The complaint with the NACC could lead to serious investigations focused on potential misconduct by officials and medical personnel who facilitated Thaksin's hospitalisation.

Looking ahead, if the NACC decides to act on the complaint, further investigations may unfold, potentially resulting in prosecutions. This case, however, also highlights broader systemic issues within the Thai judicial framework and the need for transparent checks and balances going forward.

Key Takeaways

  • Activist Nitithorn Lamluea plans to file a complaint with the NACC.

Demonstrating his seriousness or gleefully savouring watching Thaksin get his comeuppance?

What I want to know is has he been rearrested and has been placed in prison to serve his one year term !!!!

do what most people do Read the news

Surely he needs to be punished for faking it, whatever the legal term/law is in Thailand. To simply reinstate his already discounted jail term without further punishment says he’s still being favored. Perhaps as a punishment the original 8 years should be mandated. Maybe this guy will stick it to him and the system. Go on son!
