Bangkok Bank/iBanking No New Applications

I am not sure what aspect of the differences you want to know.

For functionality the two methods are very similar.  My biggest complaint is that the smallish screen on a phone can make viewing larger amounts of data difficult.

I view smartphone apps as more secure than traditional internet banking for a few reasons.  Many phones provide facial recognition based security protocols, access to your banking functions can be restricted to one easily identified device (using IMEI) and the greater physical security as the owner usually keeps his phone with him.

Except facial (farcical) recognition doesn't work and bank visits show bank staff cannot get it to work!

  • The main difference that matters to me is that I can use Bualuang iBanking on any PC with a browser, but mobile banking only on one particular phone. I really don't like single points of failure.

  • The app is better anyway. I haven’t logged into iBanking in about 10 years.

  • Totally agree! Imagine you are out of town and loose your phone.  How do you transfer money around in order to let you buy a replacement phone. Cash/Credit cards/internet access are essentia

The facial recognition to which I was referring is NOT related to the bank.  It is built into the phone's software and does not involve any other hardware or software.  It is implemented by the phone manufacturer not any bank.

Well, the App on the phone is not half as good as the browser banking site.

a) not all accounts you have listed are shown on the App and I have not worked out how to synchronize the App with the list of beneficiaries initially uploaded on the browser site
b) you cannot transfer money from your foreign currency account onto your Thai Baht account on the App; it works though perfectly well on the browser site

Just hope they will NOT close down the browser site as I definitely prefer a keyboard and a proper bigger screen than those smart phone tinies .........

They both work abroad. But if you lose the phone with the Thai bank app while being abroad, you might have a real problem.

They claim to work abroad, but I know from personal experience that the OTP SMS message that is sent to your registered mobile phone is not received on mobile networks in Laos and Myanmar, even with data roaming activated.  I asked Bangkok Bank to deactivate this OTP requirement but they refused.....

Same here. Never got it to work - multiple atempts on different phones.

I've had that problem in some countries as well, but it's a mobile network issue, not a bank issue.

And I've found a solution that works perfect for me anywhere: VoIce over WiFi, which carries SMS as well despite the name.

Yes this is the beginning of the end for Internet banking on ones PC/Laptop

Now worst luck we have to start using the stupid banking Apps.

Internet Banking is very convenient and save  with the OTP  much easier to use .

Off topic, you should use a Dual Sim phone, thats what i use, thai Sim and other Sim, both can receive OTP

one phone only. 2 Sims

dual sim thai / thai  and a US based Magic jack app ( roughly $29.00 per year..you can send and receive calls from any US area code # and it works great especially if you have to deal with any IRS or SS bizz.)  otherwis wthe standard google meet video callingg also works great

Should be called the BS bank

I have two phones - one for Thai numbers and another dedicated US phone. I am COMPLETELY screwed if I lose either one!

Worse, I have one phone with dual sim.  My computer has way more security than my up to date phone with a separate security app

Then I must be even worse...................a Thai phone and a dual sim phone with 2 UK numbers in.

What is the difference between Bangkok Bank Internet Banking services and Mobile Banking?

Internet Banking is through an internet browser on any device. Mobile Banking is through an app (on a smartphone, not sure about tablets).

At least two of the other big banks I have accounts with (SCB and Kasikorn) ditched web banking some time ago. It is more secure on your phone app with facial recognition (as others pointed out). But I agree with you about the (possibly serious) downside of having only one remote access to accounts. What if you lose your phone when you are traveling in another country? You can phone the call center I guess to make a transfer or pay a bill. But that's not really the solution.

Kasikorn Bank hasn't ditched it yet, I still use their web banking.

Noted. I never tried to use Kasikorn web access.

Other countries still have Web banking don't they. UK, US, others. Some just added double-factor authentication to get around the increasing security issues. Don't know why Thailand couldn't follow suit.

Krungsri, Kbank, UOB still have Internet Banking, as of now

Krungsri will discontinue it from 1.10.2025.

At Krungsri the face scan didn't work for me either. Until I disabled my abroad SIM, and had only my Thai SIM enabled. Then it worked like a charm.

Never thought of that. Try it, if you have dual SIM.

And your VPN must also be disabled.

Like they say, the Krungsri Bank app is the future. Very easy to use.

Good thinking Batman! 🙂 I'll try that

Cash/Credit cards/internet access are essential in that scenario!

Preempt the loss or theft and buy and carry a second or replacement phone. Install the banking apps but don't activate them. Keep a separate note of all your banking information including account numbers, logins and passwords. Then all you need to worry about is charging them up.

But imagine if you lose your smartphone while overseas and OTP won't work? Make sure you're new/backup phone has an activated SIM with a roaming package.

Krungsri only discontinues the private web solution, and they allow private customers to sign up for their business solution.

One easily identified device may be nice for many if not most, but many people use different devices, or travel and use different computers, i.e. like in an internet shop which granted are rarer these days.  In addition, some institutions really struggle when one logs in from different networks, servers, locations, etc.  I think the whole remote logging in security thing is going to bounce around and go back and forth and change a lot.

As for biometrics, facial recognition, finger print types of things, it is not hard to recall any number of movies and a few real life incidents or demonstrations where one is forced to place their finger here or there, or is forced to face his device, etc.  Recall the Myth busters episode where they fooled a thumb print device by using scotch tape to lift a finger print, make a photo copy of it and then used it successfully.  And some people do change their appearance quite a bit with beards, etc.

You should have a contingency plan in place as phones get lost all the time.  I only am familiar with iPhone and Apple makes it easy to keep a backup in the cloud or on your desktop.  Losing a phone is not much different than having a desktop failure and you should always have a backup... or two!

Don't just make a plan....  test it as well.

You must lead an 'interesting' life if you suspect any of those things are likely to happen to you.  As for the beard..... replacing your phone's biometric of your face should take maybe a minute or two.

Much better banks have stopped internet banking years ago. The only banking you can do is on an app on a phone. Or buy phone call
