More than 50%. It will need doing soon so why don't the spineless Government do it now. 70 by 2030, 75 by 2035, 80 by 2040. Labour are going to lose anyway so why not do something worthwhile.

Soylent Green is alive and well.

You don't know how brits describe the french , it is certainly not as cowards, that "honour" is reserved for the Italians

The French regularly take to the streets to protest,  good on them if you ask me

Those Frenchies and their street protests against raising the pension age in 2023 were a significant factor in the UK government backing down from their plans to bring forward the state pension age to 68 from the early 2030's.

The chart compares apples and oranges. Spain appears attractive, but this includes corporate pensions, which skews the comparison.

We don't raise enough (tax) revenue. We are a low-tax country compared to most of those mentioned

In the British pension system, shortfalls in the State Pension Age (SPA) can be addressed by increasing taxes, since the government guarantees the funds required for SPA payouts. Yet raising taxes is only one of several options. Increasing National Insurance Contributions (NIC) is another. Altering the rules mid-game remains a possibility too.

Wherever money accumulates, it inevitably draws attention—and attempts to seize it. A prudent strategy is to avoid spotlighting such reserves or loudly declaring insolvency. In some cases, a degree of strategic ambiguity seems not only tolerated but quietly encouraged. That tolerance, however, complicates the situation—and stirs a quiet anger in me.

At my age, I still find myself relearning that the old adage “practice makes perfect” doesn’t apply here—especially when money is involved. Sometimes I have to squirrel away a bit of cash, because if I leave it in the family purse, it disappears in no time. My old habits die hard. The trick is to keep smiling—and not talk about it.

I love charts. Never saw a perfect one.

Nice chart, I wonder how the system worked on other counties.  Can people claim early for a reduced benifit?

In the USA, People can start SS at 62 with a reduced payout.  Full retirement age (FRA) for anyone born after 1960 is 67.  The maximum payout at FRA is $4,018 USD, and if someone waits until 70, it's $5,108 USD.    The average payout is $2000/month

And yet the average length of time to claim the state pension in the UK is 8 years.

Really, if the current life expectancy is 82 then people should be claiming their pension for 17 years. The original pension was only designed to cover 8 years so it must rise to 75.

15 hours ago, BritManToo said:

No I'm saying they no longer collect their pension after 8 years because they're dead.

Average lifespan of a man born in the 1950s is 74 according to actuarial tables.

I think that's a bit optimistic as most of the men I've known are dead well before age 70, but the government hides it, nobody will work to age 67 if they think they'll be dead before retirement.

What is the life expectancy of someone born in the 1950's who's still alive? Your stat is meaningless.

Moreover, life expectancy data is being  expressed as a national mean, there are demographic groups within the average that have life expectancy way below the mean.

Blackpool, Glasgow and the North East of England have significant lower regional mean life expectancy, this becomes even more pronounced when life expectancy across socioeconomic class is examined.

Significant numbers of unskilled or low education people in these regions will die before reaching state pension age at its current age of entitlement.

I think you are confusing hooman life expectancy with govt life expectancy. Consult an actuary or move to a country with long life expectancy, that should work.🙃🙃

No question that the present system is antiquated. An increase in eligible age is imo unavoidable, but age shouldn't be the only determining factor.

Yes I do, they expressed their wishes' over and over, to destroy Israel

Yep, they need more money to spend on Mussa, Mamoud and Khalifa.

Deport all to Thailand on reaching retirement age. Save the NHS a fortune .Freeze their pensions. .....and re-possess their property to house Illegals . Solved !

Not to mention all the illegals stripping jobs.

Think I prefer the AI, it's less stabby and rapey.

Apparently HMRC are now using AI to look at UK taxpayers bank accounts, social media, and spending habits. Anything out of the ordinary could be flagged and tax automatically taken from bank accounts.

It's already been stated that's not allowed.

They have to specify the names of accounts they want to view.

Not that I use my 'pension' bank account for any dubious transactions.

And how would they know what social media you use, nobody uses their real names online.

Starmer/Bliar  digital ID will soon solve that, don't you feel "safer" already ?

I've always kept my online stuff anonymous.

And how could the UK impose mandatory use of digital ID worldwide?

Most of us aren't in the UK.

An immigrant turns up with no qualifications, no connections to help out finding work and little or no English language but still manages to take your job off you.

NO:

Did you realize who collect the garbage?

White men with good English language???

I doubt it because they won't look for such a job.

They do look for such jobs  but  can't even get an interview because

the person selecting candidates  is only looking for persons from their own

ethnicity/background /language..which in most cases now days is not English.

No it's not funny at all..its a well known "phenomenon"

however if an English person does it its called racism  but an immigrant or ethnic minority gets free reign to "positively" discriminate in favour of their "countrymen"  to get the job  instead of an "English" person.

So it's working vice versa.

Worst part of this for me is that you can’t draw your private pension until 10 years before the state pension.

I knew state pension would be worth FA so made my own arrangements but won’t be happy if I can’t get at my own money until I’m 70!
