Beach Businesses Hit by Alcohol Ban Enforcement in Pattaya

Featured Replies

When one sees all the havoc, nuisance or even damage that drunks can create, could be a good idea to ban in public spaces.

Great news. If smoking cannabis on the beach isn't allowed why should alcohol be allowed.   The stench of cheap beer and wine coolers makes me want to vomit.

  • so is drinking alcohol not allowed or sales not allowed on the beach, if only the latter why are tourists being fined

  • So somebody could buy beer at a 7/11 and sit outside and drink it and it's okay. But if they walk across the street with the same beer and sit on a beach chair they can be arrested/fined? It's gotta b

Does TAT know about this?  Thailand seems determined to kill off what remains of tourism here.  TDAC + the 'new' 300 baht levy at the airports have sent Vietnam numbers soaring, whilst this country remains mired in overcomplicating every facet of life here.

Seriously if 300 baht is going to wreck your holiday budget then you need stay at home. A more pressing point is will my 300 baht go to a genuine cause or another Thai scam.

After coming here in 2000 for the first time I soon learned to stock up before the Buddhist Days and drink in the comfort of your own condo and at a drastically reduced price. Pattaya needs a defined tourist area where alcohol can be sold all day and bars must shut at midnight. Give in a try and get all the trouble makers off the streets before they cut lose around 2 am every morning.

My suggestion!  More beaches, no restrictions.

Story could be from last year, or the year before, or the year..........nothing changes in Thailand, apart from the drinking locations.🙃🙃

It's just so silly. Why should beach goers not be allowed a refreshing beer!

And you should go rent a lounge chair and have a beer.

Great suggestion. Thanks.

We could drink beers on Phuket beaches and elsewhere since my earlier memories of the early 80s , what’s changed ? Is it the chair owners that are not allowed to sell ? So if I was in a restaurant or cafe, having being served a beer, I, as the customer would be fined if the owner had no license ?

Heck I remember drinking beers and having a bit of a party on the coach trip down to Phuket!

That and a 20 dollar whole lobster meal when I got there...

Now the sellers of alcohol need the licence..... back then it was simply a coldbox!

If chair vendors want to sell beer then get a license, its only a few hundred baht if that solves the problem.

The licence to sell alcohol is 1000 baht/year

No its not. Its 8250 for a wholesale license and 250 for a trade license. I believe mine went up this year to 300 baht

I am quite sure a beach chair vendor would have to dance thorough quite a few hoops to allow him to sell alcohol as well as chairs. We all know there is a queue of tight uniforms all want a little taste! They are restricted as to where and when at least.

The brown envelope issue isn't about having licenses its about the people that don't have valid licenses operating a business illegally and paying the police to look the other way.

Your post contradicts itself and is nonsense.

I think you will agree that everything here is overcomplicated leading to poor productivity/service.

98% employment means overmanning leaving Thai workers two choices; 1. just take the money; 2. desperately seek to please.  (Check out any Thaiwatsadu store.)

Banking & Immigration are two areas where rules vary from office to office, even from officer to officer.  This leads to haphazard degrees of success/dissatisfaction.  Few people voice their satisfaction; most vocal are the dissatisfied.  This has a knock-on effect when people are considering holiday choices.  Reputation is all.  At the moment Thailand's is low; Vietnam's high.  TripAdvisor exists for this reason.

Cost is also a factor when deciding on  holiday destinations.  The 300b levy will be introduced in time for the High season.  People are making this decision now.  Thai hotels are pricing themselves out of consideration.  Alcohol prices are at least 50% cheaper in Vietnam; the people eager to please, rather like Thailand was when I first came to live here 22 years ago.

On a microcosmic scale, my daughter/S-i-L have chosen Vietnam for a two week holiday in January being able to afford the 5* hotel prices.  Myself/spouse will be joining them.

Of course, despite my multi-entry re-entry permit, I will still have to fill in a TDAC; then for my next 90 day report, I will be forced to re-submit the usual copied pages of data, (which has hardly changed in decades) by visiting Soi 5 in person, knowing that the small forest I have already submitted, is merely rotting away or being recycled for more overcomplicated procedures.

You must be old by using the word "dude " ,that's like 1980's

It's now "bro" Dan ...keep up with the times Gramps

Something isn't right. The  law's revisions  were published in the Royal Gazette last month. They only come into effect in November. How can there be enforcement when the  law referred to is not in effect? The new law is reinforces local restrictions of the consumption of alcohol at beaches. Pattaya has a more explicit ban that takes effect in November.

And before the mob starts claiming that this will kill tourism, no it will not. Alcohol consumption will still be allowed at designated licensed areas such as restaurants that are adjacent to the beach. Pattaya and Thailand will be joining other tourist destinations which have similar restrictions. Florida has open carry bans in effect. No alcohol allowed on Miami Beach, unless at a specific licensed event.  Cannes, France forbids alcohol as well.  Australians are not allowed to consume alcohol at many popular beaches. Bondi beach has a publicized enforced ban etc.

The whingers ignore the reality that the people who  bring their booze to the beach usually leave their trash and bottles behind. I remember when  parts of Patong beach were no go areas because of the broken bottles and glass chards from farang drink fests.  It will be interesting to see how this is enforced for the full moon party destinations.
