Close Bangkok bank account?

Their app is convenient, and works well.

Strongly disagree. I dumped it in sheer frustration after 3 months of trying to use it, and reverted to their excellent internet banking service.

The facial recognition nonsense they've since introduced is proving problematical for many, as evident from the following thread:

No one who has a legitimately opened BBL account with no problems should be divesting from them, if you ask me.  30 years with BBL and no issues.

Yeah I guess I don't need to close it but I don't trust them anymore so I want my money out.    I only used them because they were the only bank that would let me open an account and even th

Another thing I would curious about.   I was watching YouTube and this guy said BKK bank closed his account because he opened it on a tourist visa (DTV I think) and he had to pay 250 pounds

Only somewhat related, but I was in a Bangkok Bank branch yesterday and I witnessed a couple TRY to close their account, and they weren't allowed to. Yeah I understand there may be good reasons for that depending on the details, but I found it kind of funny. Here they are freezing and closing so many accounts and yet this couple wasn't allowed to do an account suicide.

It's hit or miss.

I tried to close a Krungri account 'bout five years ago.  Went in several times, but each time the clerk said "no can close", just withdraw all the money and the account will close automatically within a year. Took over three years for the account to close and to no longer have internet banking access to the account.

Last week, wife and I closed our fixed accounts at BBL.  Took about an hour, with page after page after page of forms for the clerk to fill out, carbon copy, stamp, get manager's thumbprint, with 'bout a dozen signatures from each of us.

Makes sense from the clerk's point of view to avoid the unnecessary paperwork when the account will automatically close anyway.

The people who opened them DTV's were always on thin ice IMO but the banks allowed them to do so and they may have been totally ignorant. Reversing a policy like that is bad business and makes them not trust worthy in general.

You can step out of the time machine please, no need to go back and change the past.

For decades it did not matter what visa you were on. They would simply open you an account regardless.

Then they started preferring some kinds of visas.

Then requiring “long stay visas.”

A year ago when the DTV was brand new, nobody had any idea if that would qualify as a long stay visa. It didn’t make sense that it wouldn’t since it was long stay.

Now that you can have your account closed merely for having one even though your account has been open for decades, somehow people are pretending like it makes sense and it has always been that way. They are not Dr. Who, they do not have a Tarsis, and the past is what it is.

Kasikorn seems to close them quite quickly if the balance drops below a certain amount (I think 500 baht). Happened to me once many years ago and also happened to my son more recently. In my case, the balance had dropped below whatever the threshold was for only a couple of weeks before I discovered it had been closed. In my son's case it might have been longer than that as he hadn't used it in some months and had only 350 baht balance.

Some Bangkok Bank accounts need to be closed in the home branch. For example – which is what I experienced – closing a fixed term account is not possible in other branches, but you can withdraw down to 2,000 baht. Withdrawal of the last amount and termination needed to be done in the home branch.

SCB works little different after they closed multiple local branches, now any branch works as "home branch". The SCB data-system also works different, where updating of ID – for example a new passport number – can be done in the IT-system; while at Bangkok Bank each single bank book needs to be replaced, as the ID-number is printed with ink only visible in ultraviolet light on the last page together with one's signature. However, if you have investment accounts in SCB – like Fund Books – a new passport number is a different and quite complicated matter with lots of paperwork.

Yeah I thought of the home branch issue. That's harsh if your original home branch was in a far away city!

I overheard some issue with how they wanted to receive the money though I obviously don't know the details.

The couple left the place in a frustrated huff and understandably so. It's their money and they likely waited well over an hour to be told no.

If it is an account with ATM-card – however, I don't know if same rule appears for a normal savings account – you can withdraw almost everything down to a few baht, if not all. Leaving an empty bank account for a year or so, will automatically terminate it.
