ASEAN Summit: Trump Aims to Broker Thailand-Cambodia Peace

US President Donald Trump is set to visit Malaysia on October 26, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. The visit coincides with significant developments regarding a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. A deadly conflict that erupted in July over border tensions resulted in substantial casualties and displacements, making Trump's visit pivotal.

In recent months, tensions arose over the undemarcated sections of the Thailand-Cambodia border, leading to five days of conflict that claimed at least 48 lives and temporarily displaced hundreds of thousands. The escalation marked the worst confrontation between the two nations in over a decade. The hope is that a declaration known as the Kuala Lumpur Accord will be signed to solidify peace and ensure a lasting ceasefire.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN's current chair, indicated that Trump will attend the ASEAN leaders' meetings; however, official confirmation from Washington remains pending. Malaysia previously brokered an initial ceasefire on July 28 that eased hostilities, following efforts by Anwar and phone discussions between Trump and leaders from both countries. The proposed broader ceasefire will require the removal of mines and heavy artillery from the contentious border areas.

Discussions between Thailand and Cambodia's foreign ministers occurred in Kuala Lumpur, attended by both US and Malaysian officials, focusing on maintaining peace. The upcoming East Asia Summit, part of the ASEAN gathering, will issue a chairman’s statement rather than a joint statement, due to objections from the US over the wording concerning "inclusivity." This meeting will see participation from leaders of all 10 ASEAN members and international partners including China, Japan, Russia, and the US.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump’s visit aims to facilitate a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
  • Historical border tensions recently escalated, causing significant casualties and displacement.
  • Malaysia and the US play crucial roles in brokering peace and ensuring disarmament.

Not sure what Trump can offer to appease both sides who seem unable to reach their own suitable solution?

He say: if you dont behave i will impose 70% tariff on both.

And by the way: would personally liked to have a hotel and golf course in your beautiful countries 🙂

I can see it now, Trump wading around in a paddy field telling dirt poor farmers on both sides  to stay on their own field or he'll  impose 100% tarriffs on both countries and maybe drop a bunker buster bomb on Pattaya or the Chinese naval base in Cambodia.  The farmers will chase him off with their sythes.

He will then take credit for the work that Anwar did.

Maybe Trump can pay a visit to Pattaya, while he's there he can go to Soi 6 and update his Epstein files.

No need for any talks Trump has already claimed he settled the conflict and brokered peace between the two countries. I think they were number six on the list of wars he has settled. Poor Donny no Nobel Peace Prize. Fancy a coloured female beating little DONNY.

not needed. I just read on the official U.S. State Department website that the Thai-Cambodian War was one of the eight settled by the "President of Peace" ... No, really posted!

No change there then.

I hope the news team here will answer the question of whether the reports that Trump is putting the pressure on Thailand is true?

Trump can believe he has negotiated peace at 20 conflicts and wars, he will still not be in consideration for next year's Nobel peace price. He is failing at all counts in America for that.

He'll most likely end up in Albania.

Our Hero will take Kuala Lumpur by storm and slay the Malaysian PM by mistake because all Asians look the same.

Hasn't he counted this conflict as resolved already?

I suspect he will threaten Thailand with sanctions, and force Thailand to ICJ, or to ratify the border in accordance with the previous ICJ ruling...

Not sure about scythes these days. A lot of farms use mechanised harvesting.

Trump is unwell. Those around him are guilty of perpetuating his cognitive decline.

They should tell him “Hey Mr President, another war that you’ve ended. Now, best that you go play golf to relax after all the work you’ve done toward world peace “.

Don’t mention the Epstein files though.

Thanks for your valuable experience on the subject. You're right, most rice harvesting is now done mechanically. We hire them for our rice fields. Here are a couple of rice harvesters temporarily parked on our property.  We recently purchased a tractor with several attachments to plough and till ours, and others, fields. More and more machinery is  now used on farms.

However, I can assure you, from actual experience, that every farmer in the region who works fields, owns  sythes, sickles, machetes, or similar to chop back the jungle, kill snakes, occassionally each other, etc.
