The Thai Cabinet has authorized the sudden transfer of Phuket Governor Saransak Srikruanetra, who served only two weeks in office. Anuphong Panarat, the Secretary to the Governor, confirmed that the removal will be finalized upon receiving Royal Assent. This unexpected move has sparked public scrutiny and speculation regarding administrative dynamics within the Thai government.

Saransak, who started his position on October 2, became Phuket's shortest-serving governor following a leaked document about his transfer on October 14. Replacing him will be Nirat Pongsitthaworn, formerly the Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, marked by a rapid rise under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership. Nirat, a Bangkok native with previous experience as governor of Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, and Bueng Kan, steps into this role amidst political maneuvering as Anutin’s administration considers calling an election within four months.

Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee voiced criticism over the abrupt transition, describing it as symptomatic of Thailand’s provincial governance system. He highlighted a pattern of governors serving minimal terms, often just as they start to understand their locales, due to top-down personnel management. Chalermpong cited a lack of local autonomy, asserting that significant decisions require approval from central government, which stifles efficient governance.

Chalermpong further called for systemic reforms, advocating for the direct election of provincial executives by residents to ensure that leaders have a genuine connection and accountability to the people they govern.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket’s governor was abruptly replaced after only two weeks in office.
  • Critics cite this event as evidence of ineffective top-down government administration.
  • Calls are growing for direct election of provincial leaders to enhance governance.

That would also mean more corruption?

A.s kissing and promoting Mr Anutin might be cheaper than corrupting 76 elections?
