A man in Bangkok has been praised for returning over 225,000 baht after finding it on the street, a move that has garnered commendation from local police and social media users. The cash belonged to a convenience store manager who lost it while on her way to make a bank deposit. The incident unfolded when Saranya, the store manager, reported the missing money to officers at Samsen Police Station on October 14.

Saranya had accidentally dropped the funds, which were in a plastic bag, while traveling to the bank. Police Lieutenant Colonel Kiattirat Wongkaensarn and Pol. Lt. Col. Kriangsak Sudjitjul reviewed CCTV footage, which revealed a Thai man picking up the bag. The man, later identified as Anakepan, initially did not report or attempt to return the money.

Anakepan was eventually located and admitted to taking the bag, though he claimed not to have spent any of the money. He explained that he was unaware of the owner's identity and unsure of how to return it. When escorted to Samsen Police Station, Anakepan voluntarily returned the entire amount to Saranya, who expressed her relief and gratitude.

The police reminded the public to be vigilant with their belongings, particularly when handling substantial sums of money. A statement emphasized the importance of carefulness in busy areas, stating, "Please be careful with your belongings, particularly in busy public areas. Losing money is distressing, but thankfully, this case ended well due to one man’s integrity.”

While Anakepan did not face any charges, authorities noted the potential legal consequences of failing to report lost property, which under Thai law can be considered theft. The incident has been positively received online, with locals praising Anakepan’s honesty as a refreshing act in today’s world.

No confirmation has been made by the police regarding any reward for Anakepan, but Saranya expressed immense gratitude for the safe return of the funds.

Key Takeaways

  • Anakepan returned 225,000 baht he found on the street to its rightful owner.
  • The police praised the act and advised the public on the importance of being cautious with valuables.
  • Social media users commended the honesty displayed in this incident.

So the thief are being praised for his honesty - after being caught!

Praised for his honesty and returning the money? He was caught on CCTV and traced, so could hardly deny picking up the money.

Call me a cynic, but I doubt the money would have been returned if the police hadn’t tracked him.

Just wondering how many good people here would return a bag of money found in a laneway.

Hard proof we live in a surveillance society. Had that money been deposited with the police, there would have been no receipt offered a poor old dude living in a slum shack. Poof--it's just gone...

I myself  would hand it into the police if I found it in the UK, but an unmarked parcel containing that amount of money would make me reluctant to hand it to the Thai police. If I found it locally I would hold it, let people know I had it and would give it to whoever was able to tell me the exact amount of money that was in the parcel.

I would absolutely not let it be known that you have a large stash of money, linked to who knows what activity, in my home

Just imagine the potential consequences.... What happens if somebody breaks into your home to steal the money, helping themselves to a few of your own belongings in the process?

Are you then going to report the break-in to the police? Even if the money isn't related to any illegal activities itself, I'm pretty sure that not handing it into the police is in itself a crime. Whether you'd be prosecuted or not I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't fancy risking it.
