I think if I were quite wealthy I would probably spend a few months of the year in Thailand and the balance of the time traveling the world and living part-time in other countries.

But I live on a limited income which is enough for a very good life in Thailand. I have a great Thai woman, and I consider my quiet life in Thailand to be outstanding. I love everyday I spend there. I'm in Los Angeles now and I can't wait to get back.

Thailand still puts a smile on my face after nearly two decades. As far as I'm concerned if it works don't fix it, and if it's not working then seek solace elsewhere.

Of course times change ,living changes and you may prefer to live elsewhere

Explore the World please that's all I ask !!!!!!

I know Simon on here moves every 3 months or so , I will probably move the same as him to live the excitement

...

If you're referring to me, I don't move around every few months for the excitement - there are more down-to-earth reasons.

- I move between Myanmar and Thailand/Laos because there is no 'retirement' visa in Myanmar.  When I'm not teaching in Myanmar, then I have to leave that country and 'wait' in Thailand or Laos for my next job, or wait for the junta boys to let me back into the country (sometimes they don't let me back in..)

- Until recently, I would stay at different locations in Thailand during these breaks: Koh Phangnan, Samui, Jomtien Beach, Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Bung Gan, Kanchanaburi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak.  But nowadays I stay in Luang Prabang, because I'm not prepared to stick 800k baht in a Thai bank.

I'm in Luang Prabang right now, with my new school employer in Myanmar trying to persuade the immigration to let me back in.  Because of the upcoming 'fake' elections in December in Myanmar, their immigration department seems to think any foreigner wanting to stay in Myanmar is a journalist - so they are delaying issue of business visas.

I don't move around other countries.  Although a nice idea, it would work out too expensive on my UK state pension.

Do any of you retired single expats move countries every year or so ?

As big Kev used to say ..."Im excited !!!

What a dream to say live.3 months in Siem reap...then Da Nang in Vietnam then Cebu in the Philippines, then Udon Thani

What a retirement dream !!

My retirement dream is to live in Thailand for 6 months then Cambodia then Vietnam then Bali ,then in the Philippines probably Palawan or islands

I know Simon on here moves every 3 months or so , I will probably move the same as him to live the excitement

Bali seems to be more popular for retirement,of course Vietnam is second popular followed by Duamagette Philippines

Do any of you nomads do this or do you just sit in your 21sqm rooms in Pattaya bring depressed

Of course if your married your stuck !

Life is moving guys ....

You better find your niche soon. As you get older you face the risk of being rejected to fly and too old to continuously pack up your belongings to move to another country easily.

The good thing is that living in the West no need for visa runs, no need for Visa extensions

But it means living in the West.

sounds like hassle to move around in retirement, the beauty of retirement visa is that that is over with once 50

Hmmmm.....isn´t that when it starts?

Certainly travelling like that is an answer if you get bored easily in one place, eventually you'd get bored of the travelling and choose i place most likely

If you're bored traveling it's definately you that's the problem.

Not long ago you stated you were leaving Thailand with plans of never returning after a couple of run-ins with a monkey a ladyboy.

Now you want to come and stay for 6 months.

Did the offending monkey write and apologize to you?

It's in your head. When we travel we are moving towards new experiences, not away from ourselves.

12 hour overnight bus journeys arent personally enjoyable

Think of the positive, the toilet stops ,the people you will meet

Time is limited ,we won't be here in 30 years

If not married, I would be much more nomadic than I am now.   Wife enjoys here garden & greenhouse.   I enjoy being O&A, so we compromise.   Need to be at house, or pay someone.   Get O&A as much as practical.

Works for us.   BUT, if single, would use house as base, and probably be O&A 300 days a year, in TH, as no desire to deal with airports or planes.

True. That's one of the reasons why I never got tied to a property here. It becomes too costly maintaining two residences and you end up not travelling well.

The guy above probably needs to sit in his condo he purchased most of the time now due to financial constraints. If he does travel he wants the minivan ride.

I don't particularly want to meet any new people .

I don't want any more friends or acquaintances

Besides , everyone else will either be asleep or looking at their phones

I spent my 40's and 50's going to new places, and doing exciting things. now getting closer to 70, I'm staying put.

Im tired of new countries and continuously moving, something I have done all my life, but still traveling between Norway and Thailand only from now because of family and work. Hope to settle down once day in Thailand if the seasonal pollution becomes acceptable. We will see what tomorrow brings.

But travel around in Asia constantly on my elderly day, nope, not for one second I want to spend time or money, or maybe better said, wasting money on places that is in my eyes overrated and overpriced. 30 years ago, it was possible to feed the curiosity and interests as well more for the money, but today, to much people and to much hassle everywhere.

Last time I travelled on the bus the toilet stops were busy

You"d be surprised

You can't take money with you

You won't be here forever to spend it

Im not worried about my money Im leaving, Im more worried about doing stupid things that is not beneficial. But as said in another thread, if traveling is your dream, go ahead do what you want to do.

My money and investments going to people I care for, so to me Im not here to waste everything I have heritage or gained in my lifetime, Im all up for leaving something behind to. At least keep some for my elderly days, it might come handy when things escalates or things out of reach happens.

30 years go you was going into the great unknown , the only knowledge of the Country would be what was written in the Lonely Planet .

last month I was thinking about going to Marrakech .

But, I had a  look  around Marrakech on Google Earth , watched numerous Marrakech You tube videos , went to my local supermarket and got some Moroccan food , spoke to some Moroccans online and that was enough for me .

   Didn't bother going to Marrakech

Before Brexit this is what I was planning to do in Europe, splitting time between different countries/places, winter/summer.  Not now though.  Whilst I'm still fairly healthy I'd love to do this, and include Australia/NZ/Oceania in the mix too.  Money might run out quickly though!!

Its that kind of attitude that caused you to end up in your current situation .

Definitely!

I'm forced to work like a slave

31 years service and living in a 21sqm apartment in the flybird condominium will see me end my days !!

Thankyou for your empathy

And if worse comes to the worse there are guys here who will look after me !!

Three months and Siem Reap sounds brutal boredom-wise. But I was talking to someone today who has a $300 a month apartment there. There’s a very funny poster here who has a snake logo who I think lives there. Apparently, it’s great for cheap weed, which would definitely do you some good.

I definitely agree with the consensus that past 70 the travel itch definitely lessens.

Even a year ago, I might pop down to Penang or some such for a long weekend, just for the hell of it. Now it seems like a bit of work.
