Phuket Immigration officers have apprehended four foreigners in Patong for running businesses illegally, including a motorcycle rental shop, travel agency, barber shop, and restaurants. The arrests followed raids on five establishments in Patong, Kathu district, triggered by local complaints.

Officials found an Israeli man managing several businesses, restricted to foreign operations under the Foreign Business Act. He employed three Thai and two legally permitted Myanmar workers. Although the businesses were in a Thai national's name, investigations suggested the Israeli man had complete control, indicating possible nominee involvement. Documents were collected for further scrutiny.

Two nearby restaurants were also inspected. At an Israeli-themed restaurant, another Israeli man admitted to performing managerial tasks. However, details about the second restaurant were not covered in the official reports. Authorities confirmed the arrest of four foreigners related to the businesses, with identities yet to be disclosed.

The broader context reveals a recurring pattern across Thailand. In recent cases, two Chinese nationals were detained for illegally managing a hostel in Bangkok, and a Lebanese man was arrested on Koh Pha Ngan for running an unauthorized motorcycle rental. Simultaneously, an Israeli-Thai couple's illegal travel agency was closed down.

Looking forward, investigations are ongoing, as another foreign national is suspected of involvement. Authorities aim to tighten enforcement on illegal foreign businesses, safeguarding local economic interests.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket officials arrest four foreigners for operating illegal businesses.
  • Investigations hint at nominee use to bypass legal restrictions.
  • Similar cases highlight ongoing foreign business law breaches in Thailand.

The tip of the iceberg. There must be thousands of businesses owned by foreigners who used a Thai nominee or are operating illegally in Thailand.

Why do I get the feeling that an Israeli witch hunt is happening nationwide?

Deport that guy just because he's still got a full head of hair.  I haven't, since my 20s.  It's not fair.

Because it is easier to hit them than it is to take on the Russians, Chinese and other Europeans. no one is going to sympathize with an Israeli. Low hanging fruit type of target.

Might be, but it might also be that they are overrepresented at the moment, as well as stupid enough to do thing totally out in the open.

Or it could just be their turn in the barrel.

If the police and immigration did their jobs properly Ie more checks regularly plus stiffer sentences on those found guilty plus those taking back handers 💰 🤑 Helping these people get visas easily might help 🙄

That's rather sketchy, he no-doubt financed the businesses, employed Thais and hired legal foreigners yet guilty because he wanted a say in the operations...?

Best to stay out of business in Thailand.

And what did I read some weeks ago?

Thailand is trying to legalize 700000 workers in Thailand. AND they tried that already some years ago !

Meaning a lot of workers in Thai companies (still?) not legal. Protecting only Thai companies, which are breaking law.

Dont think those workers get a fair pay and cant go anywhere to complain.

If they do , then they have other problems and could be kicked out.

So trafficking, slaves. Time for EU and USA to demand action for that again, they once did.

You see, again, Thailand is breaking their own rules. Again and again.

The Israeli guy is white-ish, not Asean, so it is pure race discrimination.

However increasing problems with people from Israel, could be a factor.

Yes, Thai laws help to tackle and hide.

You never hear Thai company fined for illegal workers or what ever.

You know Thai laws are NOT for Thai, but for foreigners. Especially being white-ish.

And all for "Authorities aim to tighten enforcement on illegal foreign businesses, safeguarding local economic interests."

If the guy wasnt there, there wouldnt be anything there and never will. Now people loose their jobs.

You even see, he had legally 2 Myanmar workers !

The only thing wrong is, he managed the business?!  I think he didnt leave brown enveloppes, so the end.

I see they got also Chinese caught. Weird, as I red bout Chinese buying durian orchards and even run  with Chinese workers. So guess, those companies pay big brown envelopes? Must be, cant declare otherwise.

The Israeli guy managed several businesses according to the article. Don't know how many, but for each business 4 Thai workers are required.

How are the over represented? The domination of foreign operations in Phuket by the Russians and Europeans  has been in place for years. The Israelis are relatively recent newcomers. They have been allowed to operate by the Russians only if they stay out the Russians way. The Israelis are not into the real estate  time share schemes as that has already been staked out by the Canadians and multiple Europeans, The Australians and British have the  boiler shop schemes turf. In effect, the Israelis are active in the scraps that no one else wanted or that was sold to them. The local authorities need to show that they are cracking down on illegal foreign activities, so they are going after the expendables and not upsetting the groups from which they make the most in kickbacks and bribes.

If the Israelis are operating illegally, they merit being removed. However, one has to be intentionally blind to not see that there are some lucrative foreign operators who have been carrying on without any concerns. If the Thais were really that  concerned they would have shut down some of the tour groups that cater exclusively to Russians with their transportation, real estate rentals, prostitution, money laundering et al.
