Racist Incidents Against UK Nurses Surge.

Featured Replies

Stoking hatred of immigrants has consequences:

The number of reports by nurses of racist incidents at work has risen by 55% over three years, according to analysis by the nursing union.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) expects to receive more than 1,000 calls this year from nurses seeking advice and support after racist incidents in the workplace, compared with almost 700 cases in 2022.

I don't know why people would want to be racist against the people who may save their lives in hospital. Goes against common sense.

To save perhaps on then money by not training them in the country ? UK spends billions for Ukraine, for NATO for showing all over the world, but does not even have a decent health care system or even a decent criminal justice syste (see how they released that sex offender by mistake). Sorry, no offence here as what I am saying here....most of my dear UK born friends think similar. Thank you so much. 🙏

Each year many foreigners who are highly specialised doctors, software engineers, nurses, dentists and people of talent are leaving the USA or the UK and going back and flourishing in their home countries. The world's prosperity is shifting. Soon Europe will be a 3rd world broke continent, like America for sure and it's all the nations in Asia, the BRICS+ member nations who will the global powers of tomorrow,  as most are already today.

I  ever saw any immigrant medical staff when I lived there before,  no idea why you would need to hire from abroad, except to save money

Does racism and racial abuse ever make sense?

Because leaders of the West have collectively decided to sell out their own kinsmen to save a few shekels. If this happened in Asia there would be riots on the streets. White people have been successfully pacified, they won't do anything but grumble online.

You make a valid point.

Most of the good doctors and nurses,  have gone to work in Australia, New Zealand, USA,  where they can earn more money!

Yes, not just Australia, but NZ, Canada, USA.

Many are also leaving the UK, be them locals or foreigners.

They take up better paid jobs elsewhere in the world where the pay is better and mainly they are more respected.

Why and how can any doctor/nurse/surgeon have a clear mind to treat some drunk broke bloke from Manchester who is insulting the medical professiona with racist comments ?

Expect to - is not the same as have.

If people are behaving in a racist manner then they should be dealt with; we have robust laws and employment procedures in place to do so - use them.

Paragraph 3 from the Guardian article, which the OP chose to omit.

Quote

Examples of racist abuse reported to its helpline include a nurse whose annual leave was denied being told by their manager that they should not have come to the UK, and another RCN member being told by a colleague: “I want to remind you that you’re not one of us.”

Hardly racist unless we know the context. In the first example, the nurse could have commented that they got more holidays working in another country. The response would then have been reasonable. In the second example, the phrase 'one of us' could refer to any group. Maybe they worked in a different department or maybe they weren't seen as a 'team player'.

I think the headline should be 'Surge in Racial Sensitivity by Nurses'

The article in the guardian seems to refer to incidents between fellow NHS workers,  From the nature of the allegations consisting pretty much entirely of accusations of "hurty words"      I would imagine a significant number of these allegations come from people bitter who have been overlooked for promotion , or some other reason where its easy to play the race card.      The NHS is as woke an employer as you will find anywhere in the world  with an army of "officers" dedicated to DEI etc .  The average white employee would not dare to make such overt racist remarks .

And come on , a throw away comment regarding the visibility of black peoples teeth in the dark, was obviously meant as a joke , hardly a hate filled insult, and in any case it's true

And according to the article it is the governments use of anti immigrant rhetoric that is responsible,,so maybe 2 tier kier needs to watch what  he and his team of clowns are saying.

Failing to adequately stress the difference between honest hardworking legal immigrants and unvetted illegal migrants also has consequences

Why are there shortages  of medical professionals in those countries?

That is not true. Home grown medical professionals can earn more abroad or in the private sector.

Those that have some sense of national pride are getting fed up being taken for fools by the government. Foreign staff however can earn more than they would in their home country.

"The BMA and the government have been in dialogue throughout the summer and early autumn since the last walkout at the end of July, but talks broke down earlier this month."

Thai doctors in government hospitals are treated a lot worse than those in the UK, I haven't seen any riots.

Take it you have a link.

It reared it's ugly head during the brexit campaign. Fairly obvious there would a comeback when Farage showed his face again.

Suspect it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Typical Pavlovian reflexive right wing comment. Are you claiming that the article about the Royal College of Nursing claim is false?

RCN reports 55% rise in members facing racist abuse

Analysis of calls to the RCN shows a surge in complaints about racism at work. The data reveals an increase of 55% in three years, with the RCN advice line receiving three calls a day from global majority nursing staff from across the UK. Our members are calling to seek advice and support after being racially discriminated against in the workplace.

I did not ‘choose to omit’ I followed the forum rules of a limited quotation with a link to the source article.

Paragraph 3, which you quote provides two clear examples of racism.

Thank you for highlighting both the paragraph and your own blindness to the issue.

Well talking about issues , has anybody ever considered what effect the UK poaching these healthcare workers might have on the 3rd world countries they come from?

Are these hellholes simply  bursting at the seams with an excess of unemployed  highly qualified medical professionals who they just don't have the work for?   Could be possible I suppose,  but somehow i doubt it , so who looks after their own  population's sick and  dying, ?

You should start a thread on that.

Hiring medical staff from abroad not only brings in fresh perspectives and skills, but it also helps address staffing shortages and ensures patients receive the best care possible. It's not just about saving money, but about providing quality healthcare for everyone. You need to broaden your ideas pal.

Im guessing most of these abuses are from foreign males that believe women are to be owned like cattle and covered up in public, not out working without male family chaperones.
