Featured Replies

2 decades of hiding in plain sight. On this aspect it is very impressive. Now he has to go back to Iran.

After 20 years in Thailand I imagine Iran is going to be a bit of a nightmare.

Can't say I haven't thought about it. Based on the fact I've lived here 20 years and never once have I commited an illegal immigration act. That includes using an agent for my extensions. I do admit I feel somewhat jealous that he's got away with a crime for so long whereas I struggled at times to stay legal. I have 3 teenage children, which is costly, and the Iranian looks as if he hasn't a care in the world. But my conscience is clear. I hope he can sleep at night.

it sucks to see other get away with breaking the law but probably not worth it to make enemies where you live. If the Thai people don't care then it's kind of up to them.

So the 90 day reporting system doesn't work?

Grassed up nice well done that concerned netizen.

The likes of where I live I doubt the locals would know how to. Or know that he's acting illegally.

Or care... 'Specially if he's not bothering anyone.

its easier said then done to go back after 20 years and the old body arent compliant,

i did that

With a regime like that in Iran, I would also try to stay here as long as possible.
So what now? Will he be sent back to that country with that terrible regime?

There isn't a police force under the sun to which that same sentiment does not apply!

IF the farangs 'standing around there all the time' are the owners, well, that's all they are allowed to do I'm pretty sure. They can't bus the tables, bring you a beer.... nada.

So perfectly normal to just hang out and keep an eye on the staff, etc

Correct...that's all they are allowed to do.  My bet is that many, not all, do considerably more...the easy way to find out is to have undercover agent visit the biz and see what if anything goods or services are offered by the falang hanging around.

It is hard to imagine owning a biz and being there all the time and not participating in some level of actually running the business.  Is it possible?  I guess.  Frankly i am not sure what you would or would not be allowed to do with no work permit in even "keeping an eye on staff" as that sure sounds like work to me.  Tough work even.

I'm gobsmacked. In the village I live in we have a copycat occurance. There's an Iranian living openly with his Thai teelak and her children. He's been living here openly, working, for a good few years. He usually works in the fields but currently he's the delivery boy for the teelaks restaurant. He speaks fluent English and Thai. I actually thought, on reading the article, that it was the same person. Amazing.

Well, would you like to live in Iran? Or your teelak? Black is the new black!

He could get some jail time because of the length of the overstay, but what for sure is. a hefty fine and a bundle under the table

and barred from entering Thailand again for many years.

Goat.

This guy could write a book on evading immigration for two decades. Propose it to the UN as essential training material for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Jail time first then Iran. Hell after Hell for this scoundrel.

Typical arrogant Persian....we have thousands in Los Angeles.

Send him to IDC and then back to Iran....I am sure he will enjoy his homeland now.

Ten years.

I wonder what level of consular assistance he will get!

Behaving "like a mafia figure" is not really advised for any foreigner in Thailand regardless of visa status

Lot of hate for some random old man in this thread. For all we know this "intimidating behaviour" could've been nothing at all.

He shouldn't have been here in the first place but Iran is hell, I'd leave too. If he has no ties there it's game over. Sad really.

I would get too stressed out if I was on overstay .

Knowing that everyday could be your last and you could be back home next week with a 10 year ban from Thailand . Constantly waiting for that knock on the door , way too stressful .

Well don't get too complacent , I bet there are a few on their way to the airport now, simply due to the whims of some faceless executive at the Bangkok Bank. Admittedly without a 10 year ban , but   We can never know what requirements the authorities here can come up with at a moments notice, all it takes is for one of them to have a brain fart and  ones immigration  "position"  could change from relatively secure to absolutely impossible  very very quickly

I doubt there was any intimidating behaviour, maybe his mrs pi$$ed  somebody off or maybe she wanted shut of him

Why on Earth would you go out of your way to treat people so terribly when your life can be upended in a mere moment by just you being looked into for a second.

20 years illegally is incredible. I can't imagine being here illegally for a month as I'd probably crumble from the stress of waiting for that doorknock.

How come the expensive roving BMWs did not catch him ?

And for all we know he may be hiding out from a life of crime or oppression back in Iran.  He could have married  a local woman and kept up legitimate stay here had he entered legitimately. Does he have a passport even?

What happened to Big  Joke saying he got rid of all the overstayers?
