Greater Bangkok Faces Increased Flood Risks as Waters Rise

Bangkok and parts of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi are bracing for potential flooding, warned the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda). After recent rains, the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) in Chai Nat upped the Chao Phraya Barrage's discharge from 2,750 to 2,800 cubic metres per second. This move aims to handle increased water from northern rivers swollen by Tropical Storm Kalmaegi but raises concerns for riverside communities.

High sea tides currently hinder drainage into the Gulf of Thailand, putting areas outside Bangkok's major flood barriers under pressure. Gistda has alerted residents in Pathum Thani's Sam Khok to Muang district and Nonthaburi's Pak Kret and Bang Kruai districts to be vigilant. At-risk areas in Bangkok include Bang Phlat, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok Yai, and Thon Buri, which also lie outside key flood protections.

Heavy rainfall is expected across northern Thailand, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and surrounding areas, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. A developing low-pressure system here could cause flash floods, landslides, and harm to agricultural interests. Southern regions should also prepare for storms due to south-westerly winds over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, with waves potentially exceeding 2 metres in stormy areas, reported the Bangkok Post.

The RID reported rising water levels in northern rivers like the Ping, Yom, and Nan, leading to increased downstream discharge. Continued inflows are anticipated in the Central Plains as high tides persist, slowing drainage and heightening flood risks through the week's end.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed agencies to expedite flood relief efforts. The government plans to compensate more than 600,000 struggling households nationwide, amounting to more than 20 billion baht.

Additional funds are being prepared for households enduring extended flooding across 17 provinces, with a budget of 1.55 billion baht for nearly 124,430 families.

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) reassured the public, stating that the nation's dams and reservoirs still possess adequate capacity to handle incoming water. This announcement seeks to ease worries about potential widespread flooding.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok and neighbouring regions face heightened flood risks due to increased water discharge and high tides.
  • Heavy rain persists in northern and southern Thailand, potentially causing flash floods and landslides.
  • The government is actively disbursing flood relief funds to support affected households.

So what is the news??? In 20 years I hear the same old song and in 20 years nothing really nothing has been done to prevent or start to prevent flooding, where ever in the country, Probably ionly when the streets are permanently flooded the Government start to act, because it is the Thai culture.. everything at the very last moment... open the dams to release water at the very last moment if the dam has almost fill capacity. although the weather forecasts a lot of heavy rain.......... other examples last moment emerge, first take a turn than open your blinker, and make things worse before start to do anything

Welcome to Thailand... prevention costs money,so forget any major changes.

Flooding vs Air Pollution...who's gonna win?

50/50

How’s it going in your area @Crossy ?, up here in Ayutthaya it has all come at once !!

No signs of flooding in my area but just seen a video of heavy flooding outside City Park mall !

Haven’t seen this before in the last 9 years I have been here !!

@Andrew Dwyer Yeah, reports  from Ayutthaya are not looking good.

Although currently ok, just muddy, we are watching the level carefully and filling sandbags.

Things do tend to happen fairly slowly, we are at a wide section of the river and there are no temporary flood defences to collapse as happened recently just up-river at Wat Suan Ma Muang where the village flooded rapidly when the levee failed.

See the 2025 Bangkok river level thread.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Nothing learned in 2011. People who don't believe in climate change think flooding is inevitable so don't plan for it. It just seems to be life on repeat.

There was a time when the canals could cope with water rising. However, some clown thought it a good idea to fill in many of the canals to increase the flow of motor traffic. Now the flow of water is causing motor traffic problems. Duh!

A lot of money has been spent on the issue of flooding, but nobody knows where the money ended up.

"Concerns"  but what Action?

Drainage System Development Office, Feb 26, 2563 BE,  https://dds.bangkok.go.th/eng/about23.php

Study, analyze and prepare a master plan, work Plans and Projects regarding Bangkok Flood Prevention and Drainage System

Ten Responsibilities (a selection as follows):

  • 4. Construction of flood protection line along the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok Noi Canal And Maha Sawat Canal.
    5. Construction of flood prevention system, drainage system of enclosed areas (Polder) and construction of large drainage tunnels, including procurement and development of the monkey Cheek (Kaem Ling) Water Reservoir or Water Bank with appropriate conditions in Bangkok
  • 8. Consider allowing, form and specification for construction of intrusive structure along Chao Phraya River, Bangkok Noi Canal And the Maha Sawat Canal and also to improve the drainage system in the Bangkok area for both government and private agencies.

Solution to date: Release flood waters from dam and people seek high ground.

Make up your mind is it flooding or is it air pollution is everybody in Bangkok a complainer.
