A Thai soldier has lost his right foot and ankle after stepping on a landmine near the Cambodian border in Si Sa Ket province on November 10. The explosion occurred in the Huai Ta Maria area, opposite the Preah Vihear Temple, while troops were patrolling the frontier zone. Rescue teams from the Second Army Area were dispatched immediately to evacuate the him and another injured soldier by air.

According to an official post on the Army Military Force Facebook page, the blast took place at around 09.35. Sergeant Major First Class Therdsak Samapong, attached to Infantry Company 1611, sustained a severe injury resulting in the loss of his right ankle. Private Vajira Tantana, also from the same company, suffered chest tightness and was transported to hospital alongside Therdsak for medical treatment.

The Suranaree Task Force, which oversees security operations in the region, confirmed that both soldiers were airlifted to Sunpasit Hospital in Si Sa Ket for emergency care. The Second Army Area reported that personnel were conducting a routine route patrol when the explosion occurred. The site has since been secured pending a full inspection by ordnance disposal teams.

The Thai–Cambodian border remains one of Thailand’s most mine-contaminated zones due to decades of regional conflict and unresolved territorial disputes. Despite ongoing clearance campaigns, landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) continue to pose serious risks to both military personnel and civilians. The Royal Thai Army has repeatedly emphasised its commitment to clearing these hazards and ensuring safer patrol routes. In early November, the First Army launched renewed mine clearance operations and constructed shelters to improve troop safety along the border.

Military officials have said further details about the incident will be released once the investigation is complete. Additional safety measures are expected to be implemented in response to the explosion as the Royal Thai Army continues its demining efforts in the border region.

Don't they teach the soldiers who are going to that area how to find landmines and disarm them?

this is going to piss off a lot of Thai people that there are more landmines hurting their soldiers. I do hope they do not determine it was recently placed.

UPDATE
Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Escalate After Landmine Injuries

Tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border have escalated following injuries to two Thai soldiers who stepped on a landmine at Chong Ta Maria, Kantharalak District, Si Sa Ket Province, near Preah Vihear Temple, on 10 November 2025. Cambodian forces were later observed firing small arms towards Thai positions at Ta Muean Thom Sanctuary in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, creating a highly tense standoff. Thai soldiers have not retaliated, but the two sides remain in close-range confrontation.

Earlier in the day, the Thai Air Force announced it was suspending all agreements between Thailand and Cambodia until hostile actions by Cambodian forces cease. The Royal Thai Air Force stated it would act with “honour, dignity, and the national interest” as its guiding principle. This follows ongoing security concerns in border areas where Thai soldiers have faced repeated risks from unexploded ordnance.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed strong concern over the landmine incident, which left one soldier with a severed leg and another injured. He immediately instructed the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge an official protest with the Interim Observer Team (IOT) overseeing the area. The prime minister emphasised that all actions must protect Thailand’s sovereignty and the safety of its personnel.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that the prime minister has ordered continuous monitoring of the situation and support for troops stationed along the border. Planned operations under the previous week’s joint declaration with Cambodia have been suspended until the landmine incident is fully addressed. Any proposed prisoner release scheduled for 12 November has also been put on hold.

Officials indicate that discussions on resuming suspended agreements will depend on the outcomes of ongoing protests and clarification of the recent incidents. Thai forces continue to maintain positions along the border, ensuring vigilance while awaiting diplomatic and operational updates.

If the landmines are on Cambodian soil the Thai army did wrong, as the crossed the border...And Thailand doesn't recognize the borders as internationally is ruled, so when the borders are being recognized nothing will happen anymore

Ohhh dear he we go again.

I believe the disputes between Thailand and Cambodia will continue indefinitely unless the two key players, Thaksin and Hun Sen, engage in direct discussions to address the underlying issues driving the conflict.

Perhaps patrols should be required to lead with mine detectors. Or aircrafts could clear footpaths with rockets in advance. Just walking along a path is not worth it.

The location near Hua Ta Maria (ห้วยตามาเรีย), as stated in all press releases by the army, cannot be identified as not even that tiny village cannot be found. Given the details of Thai Rat TV32, it seems to be a bit away from the Cambodian border within Thailand.

Question now is, where do Cambodian soldiers put (forbidden) landmines; on their side of the border to protect the latter or sneak in, taking the risk of getting arrested or even shot while on Thai territory.

It is most regrettable and I have all sympathy for the wounded soldier, who did nothing but follow instructions by his superiors but before you blame, without proof, the Cambodians, it might well be, that a fellow Thai soldier buried this landmine on the Thai side of the border to .... protect the latter from infiltrations by the Cambodian army.

Grown-up politicians would get on the phone and sort it out immediately without risking a renewed declaration of war. But, as long as the Thais do not observe basic rights of prisoners of war (there was this article about emergency dental treatment of a Cambodian soldier who got any medical attention declined - provided the media reported the truth!) ........

Put the hatchet away, neither country can afford this game of war. And for those 20% of the GDP of Thailand, I just hope that the discerned viewer overseas realize, that Phuket or Pattaya, very very close to Cambodia on a world map, will know the distance otherwise it will scare even more tourists away for the upcoming season!

No, Thai scum for dropping a cluster bomb that killed a ten year old boy

A bomb that killed a 10-year-old boy and injured his father was an M-85 cluster sub-munition left from a Thai airstrike, the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has confirmed.

A sad consequence of conflict.

He didn't lose a foot  the official report, this morning says an injured ankle...which I ask, seems BS, a PMN-2 would cause lot lot more damage, personally I think the whole thing is propaganda BS...oh, and magically the number of injured soldiers, went from yesterday's 2 to 4 today, it seems the military can't even remember its own lies.

Both anyone replies  I don't take sides, both lie in ear...but honestly, Thailand's lies are so obvious. Why would Cambodia invade Thailand...it is undermanned, under equipment, but hey, since 1932, Thailand has had an expansionist agenda... historical fact.

Personally I think the Thai military will keep it going, coup 23 coming soon.

Aren't anti personnel mines illegal? I suppose not if you don't sign up to the anti personnel mine agreement. So why are the Cambodians putting anti personnel mines down.

Thanks - my thought as well. may be soon when A-NUT-IN -Thailand dissolves the Parliament, to stop the Peoples Party in its tracks!

Did they not had the Taksin anti landmine boots ?

Do you have proof that they have been laid recently, and in Thai territory , eg within the last 30 years, if you do then take your proof to the relevant UN agent, as it would be against the Ottawa convention that Cambodia is a signatory to...

Oh right. So if the mines have been there for more that 30 years it doesn't matter. Just leave them there then. I assume if there was a so called "peace deal" brokered by Trump no less and claimed it as on of the eight wars he has stopped in eight months, then shouldn't the people who laid all the mines damn well remove them. Which ever side that is. What sort of a peace deal permits mine fields to remain in place.

Mate, go back and study the history of Cambodia, especially the Khmer rouge years, and also the history of conflicts along the Thai/Cambodian border....by the way  Cambodia has been clearing mines for over 20 years, your comment simply shows how foolish you are  and how one eyed you are.

Now a PMN-2 would do more damage than a injured ankle....also the report from Army Area 2 clearly stated 2 injured soldiers, somehow  a day later  there's 4.

Screenshot_20251111_062022_Facebook.jpg

BS I assume these are Cambodian mines. Why do you defend Cambodia placing mines on Thai territory.

"the Khmer rouge years, and also the history of conflicts along the Thai/Cambodian border" That must be more than 45 years ago now. Isn't it about time that they cleared them? "by the way  Cambodia has been clearing mines for over 20 years," Not doing a very good job then are they.

Do the mines all have flags telling the enemy where they are....?  🙄

If it is a high risk area shouldn't they sweep the area at least on paths? And even if they weren't recently placed given the length of time there has been peace in Cambodia shouldn't they have cleared the mines by now. Why do I get the impression they just don't are. That is not just care about Thai military but civilians on both sides.
