Questions about monthly deposit method

Featured Replies

This is the first visa renewal I've done using the monthly deposit method of proving financial security. My motivation for making the change from having 400K baht in the bank is so that my spouse can have access to my money should I die before she does. Thus I hope to avoid the sticky problem of wills and probate (or whatever it's called) in this country.

My first question is: can my bank account now be converted into a joint account without causing an issue with Immigration next year at renewal time?
I also believe that my monthly transfers are the only thing I'm required to show next year and that those funds can be used for general expenses. Is that

I was moving 65k per month before realizing that only 40K per month is sufficient if I'm renewing a marriage visa. Just mentioning that here to be doubly positive about it.

Thanks for your help.

No, IMM are insistent that the account into which you make your 40k monthly transfers must be in your name only.

How you spend your monthly transfers once they've been credited to your account is really neither here nor there as far as IMM are concerned. The important thing from their viewpoint, though, is that they must be shown in your bank passbook and/or statement as having originated from abroad - as per, for example, the FTT code (standing for Foreign Telegraphic Transfer) used by Bangkok Bank for this purpose. If they are shown with a domestic coding you will then need to obtain bank credit advice notes to prove their foreign origin for IMM purposes.

Not sure exactly what you're advocating here.

An account in your sole name and a joint account?
After taking bills and expenses into account, there won't be much left if just transferring 40K per month.

Clearly the best option is for you simply to open a new joint account if that is what you need.  Then you can keep whatever money in that as you like, and transfer the monthly amount into and out of your existing account.

You will need to show 12 monthly transfers from abroad.

Suggest you do this as one transfer of 40k +

Request 12 month bank statement in Thai language and the transfers will be denoted in Thai with "money from abroad"

That is exactly why my last extension (retirement) I changed to income method.

Upnotover suggested one way of achieving this.

For others, by way of example..

I tranfers 100k 14th of every month using WISE. The Thai partner then goes to ATM (in our building) and trasfers the 100k into her account.

As a result very little money in my account apart from few hours (or less)

Nothing in my name to require a WILL.

I use monthly transfers into our joint account for my retirement extension. Been doing so for many years and it's never questioned (Jomtien). Maybe the rule is different for marriage extensions.

An office that does that (not many would) would require double the required funds.

The bank account needs to be in your name only.

Is your wife a signatory or name is shown as joint account.

Both names clearly printed on first page of bank book.

I believe that double funds would be required for the 800k deposit method in a joint account.

I use the monthly income method of 65k pm (usually more). Ours is a normal joint account, clearly shown as such on the first page and on the bank statement and bank letters.

I've never had an account in my sole name here in 21+ years.

That's correct.

In any event I cannot explain why you have been able to use joint account for extensions marriage.

In attached thread read ubonjoe first post.

Also direct cut paste from ubonjoe...

"A joint account will not be accepted for a extension based upon marriage."

As I said. My extension is based on retirement. Maybe that is the difference.

@DrJack54  Hi Jack - I am switching from the 800K retirement extension next year to the monthly income method. I will be transferring from overseas at least 65K Baht into my Krungsri bank account every month for the next year.  My current 800K deposit used this year is still in the Bangkok Bank from the last extension.  Can you advise on what the rules are about the 6%K and also the 800K.

I believe that I can spend the 65K once it has been transferred into the bank account - is this correct?

I understand that the 800K must remain in the bank account for the obligatory 3 months. I can use the 800K money after that 3 month period, but I must I leave at least 400K in the account for the rest of the year - is this correct??

It can be transferred and withdrawn as soon as it hits your Thai account.

I recently (Oct 8😎 )  changed from money in bank to income method.

Immigration at CW were interested in my 3 months balance 800k after my last extension.

I personally decided to just leave the funds in the account.

I wanted a fall back option.

Thinking your plan of maintaining the min 400k all year for the "transition year" A good idea.

Being very conservative I actually had 800k for the two months prior to extension Oct 8 (not necessary) I just wanted to cover all bases.

BTW: when you obtain the 12 month bank statement ask for it to be in Thai language.

The Thai scrip above the transfers will show as funds from abroad.

FAIR: Best move I've made. No funds held in my Thai bank.

No need for WILL a bonus.

BTW I use WISE and the transfers (100k) are instant.

Thanks Jack - much appreciated - and I will keep in mind that Thai language issue.

I use Wise as well - the money in is Krungsri straight away - unlike Bangkok Bank which takes days and they lock up the 800K for 4 months.  Seems to me that BKK Bank do not want Expat business - their loss.

The lock up of funds for 4 months is indeed rogue action from the only bank doing that.

It's more significant for those on marriage extensions that did not plan for no access for 4 months to obtain Bank Letter..

Requesting statement in thai language works to show funds from abroad.

Just want to check, did you ask your immigration office if this is possible?

Many immigration offices only accept monthly income for marriage extension if it's your pay from your job in Thailand with a work permit.  Otherwise they require the 400k.
