Zohran Mamdani will use Social Workers in NYC instead of Police

Featured Replies

What a lovely beautiful man this Mayor is

He has a heart and as soon as he gets rid of the police and replace them with Social workers the better !

People who are doing crimes etc don't need aggressive police to confront them they need social workers who will be attentive to their needs and a listening empathic ear .

This gets better and better. NYC leftists will soon be praying for Trump to save them from themselves and their stupid decisions. Love it!

  • Stop using AI and critically think for yourself and make your own opinions instead of using that brainwashing nonsense.

  • But the maga fascists aren't interested as long as they can further polarize Amerifcans.

Get with the times old man...never ceases to amaze me the old people who don't want to get with the times

I bet you still use the staffed check out in Supermarkets too

I sure do. Why should I scan items and pack them myself? I'm not an employee.

Do you get an invitation to the staff Christian party?

All self service does is reduce employment. I haven't seen prices drop as a result of self service.

Misleading topic title. Social Workers in addition to the police which is universally accepted as a good idea.

Very good point...I haven't either but you get the packing bag free ,I just don't scan it

And...you scan the expensive tomatoes to the cheapest....oh don't be a thief !

Well currently I believe it's a social worker and a EMT ...I think that's another word for paramedic ?

I love the self check out. Always a bargain to be had.

Mamdani tried to distance himself from his previous Defund the Police mantra. He'll say whatever he thinks will get the vote, like all politicians.

But it's not what MAGA propaganda told them! 🤣

Defund the police.  Deputize anyone that the Mayor wants.  Step back and watch the fun.

You mean like what’s happening with ICE and the use of the DOJ and National Guard?

This approach may be described as a passive response to certain situations versus an over the top aggressive response to manufactured crises as a tool to blatantly take down political opponents and dissenters.
Time will tell whether this NYC approach is successful but at least it’s done without hate and malice as the main drivers.

Good to hear there still is hope for the US. Social services can do much good in certain situations.

In certain situations yes. . But a mental crisis call for help can turn into a life or death struggle in the blink of an eye.  I have a lot of experience in these types of calls.  On the surface some people need help. But deep down inside there could be a violent person who was about to explode into a rage.  In that instance social workers would call for help and help could be a long ways away. Good luck NYC this type of response protocol has been tried in other places and eventually social workers will say "I did not sign up for this".

Lots of presumptions in your post.

Lots of presumptions in your post.

I presume based upon 20+ years as a police officer in LA. We tried this social worker first response and it failed miserably.  Social Workers have a place but not at 300 AM on a wet and cold night assisting a homeless person who is despondent, angry and about to burst.   Many did not want to "hit" the streets  at night or respond to certain neighborhoods.  Most definitely did want to deal with homeless with mental crisis at night.  It was mostly for show.  A compromise solution that was attempted later was to have a Social Worker response team that was allegedly on call. Oftern they were not available when we the Police called.  So in the end the we the police had to deal with.  Of course I have never workef for the NYPD and maybe under the leadership of  the new mayor this program will work at last.  My "link" is my professional experience.

So why are you presuming that this initiative will send out social workers at 3 AM on a wet and cold night?

That was my point. Social Workers can pick and choose  when and where they respond.  Otherwise like always the police will have to handle it. Symbolic at best. Nothing this new NY Mayor has said or suggested is new.  It has been tried before.  Also, If the new mayor actually said "instead of police" then this will come back to bite him if a Social Worker is attacked and injured and the NYPD was no where near the location of the call. Good luck to all NYC social workers.

Again, lots of presumptions without knowing how it will be set up.

So your presumably saying it's only 9am to 5pm ..?

They need social workers at 3am when <deleted> hits the fan

But of course not much they can do if given no "tools" to work with eg no beds in homeless shelters or homeless person doesn't want help

I presume based upon my own professional experience.  Who knows maybe in "Old NY it will work out just fine".  What is your professional experience on this matter??  it could work if Social Workers only respond to homes in safe neighborhoods, only Monday-Friday and  between the hours of 0900 to 1700.  Otherwise the NYPD will have to handle it.  For instance 911 gets a call "I want to kill myself".  Who goes? NYPD or a Social Worker?  According to the new mayor "instead of the police" Social worker will respond. A social worker with a Masters degree in Social worker knocks on the door and is greeted by a person holding a gun to his head.  What now?

I get it, you both have lots of presumptions. You don't know how it will be set up, but do know it will fail. And it looks like you want it to fail.

Wait till the first Barnard grad Social Worker gets beaten to death with an axe in an ex-con tranny domestic.

If someones got to be sacrificed on the alter of Socialism, better to be one of their own than a hardworking cop I guess

How many government employed social workers have you encountered? I have had contact with many.  None of them seemed to keen on going into the streets.  Most SW's work in offices where clients come to them.  Not the other way around.  The one type of call where a social workers always had to go out into the field was to investigate anonymous reports of suspected child abuse. On these types of call SW's were required to be escorted by a police officer. SW's did not like going into homes. Especially if it was late at night, on weekends or on holidays.

Every tenured NYC employee belongs to a union. Unions have strict rules that cover pay, benefits and most importantly working conditions. Maybe mayor elect Mamdani has not realized that he can't just change how SW's work with a signature.

The Socialists get prosecutors & judges who echo their systemic progressive initiatives .

Sympathetic prosecutors and judges who are proponents to systemic progressive initiatives, like bail reform and lenient mental health handling,we've seen this before in the USA.

Complete morons in this thread, even for the usual MAGA posters they are going above and beyond. I struggle to understand how anyone can be so dense.

Yes, it triggers me that people can be so dense as to claim he is replacing all police with social workers, replacing security detail with social workers, or sending social workers to violent crime or murder scenes.

Does it not you?

Zohran is smoking some good Green...and should share some.

That man has no idea what he is doing....and will soon find out.

No no! They are just "thinking for themselves" by parroting the propaganda they get from SM! 😅

Doesn't bother me in the least.  What is troubling is the dense people that voted him in office really thinks "free" stuff is on the way.  He's another "wolf in sheep clothing" politician.
