Have you ever felt unsafe in Thailand

Featured Replies

There are several times I have felt unsafe in Thailand and even been nearly physically attacked

But I must ask you guys especially you guys with families, are you cautious to take your family to crowded events say events in the isaan region if you live up that way because of drunken violence or you expats that live on Pattaya are you ok to go to the crowded fireworks festival with your family

Are you cautious anywhere in Thailand regarding safety

Have you ever been attacked in Thailand

What about these morlam concerts in villages are they saw to go to on a weekend night ?

Never felt unsafe in Thailand, except on my motorcycle or trying to cross the street.

  • Never had a problem in Thailand or anywhere else, except attempted robbed in Cambodia and Brasil. And held at gun point by police in USA for speed driving when I was 19.    That's my problem

That's my problems travelling the world since 19.

Seen alot of tourist stupidity, especially in Spain, little bit in Bangla, Pattaya and local internal  violence in Koh Chang, and Koh Samui Thais against Thais.

Be nice and you most likely never experience anything at all in Thailand. Never seen anyone who got in trouble who didn't caused it themselves.

Driving motorcycles around Thailand for years, there is not one day, that I could had an accident if I didn’t pay attention or knew the pattern of most common drivers around Thailand. Especially truck drivers who just comes out at the same time they hit their turn signal, or steep hills where cars passing each other in both directions no matter there is a 90 curve or more with no sight at all. Red lights traffic from behind and also crossing at green light. Last but not least cars, trucks and motorbikes deciding for taking a U-turn in last minute crossing over to your lane

Thailand = no

Had 3 guys try to triangle me in a shaded area in PI - within 15 minutes after somebody tried to pick my pocket = I smacked their arm & kept walking.....Then outmaneuvered the triangulation....

Upon my very first arrival in LOS one time I stupidly got staggering drunk & was latched onto by a freelancer....She kept leading me down a maze of dark streets off the beaten path while constantly calling and updating somebody about location or reception.....My instincts kicked in that nothing felt right or safe so I staggered away and back to my hotel.....I might have staggered away from the best night ever, or a mugging - don't know.....

Now that I have settled into family life I'm more tuned into overseeing & guiding/protecting 2 stunningly beautiful young ladies, my daughters.....

Monkeys and ladyboy's are the only danger, take care mate 😂

Only danger for me in Thailand are some of the foreigners.

It's a very different story for some of the other countries I've been to, Angola, Mexico, Brazil, India, South Africa etc.

Just mind your own business, stay under the radar, try to avoid conflict.

It's the recipe for longevity as long as you exercise and eat well

What you need is a big bird, girlfriend 120 kg.

A strong woman who can protect you.

From drivers, only.  I'm not out at 3am, walking the streets.
Even when carrying expensive equipment, I have never felt threatened here.

MUCH scarier walking the streets in the US.

"nearly physically attacked"

That sounds a lot like "not physically attacked".

If I remember right you suffer from mouth trouble and nose trouble.

That can lead to getting your butt kicked.

Aren't you the guy who has told complete strangers that they need to lose weight cuz they are unsafe to walk.

Other times you have talked about speaking impolitely (or weirdly) to strangers.

It's you, not them.

Yes, walk quite a bit in the boonies with eyes peeled, a big stick, deet and h1/h2 inhibitors among terrifying hornets, snakes & skeeters.

Up until now, only been attacked by skeeters and threatened by a couple snakes that are dead now.

No, not safe. It’s hazardous to the ears unless you’re equipped with earplugs.

Both got into the house where we used to live, the wife killed both small cobras, one with a dustpan and killed the other with a floor squeegee.

Good thing it was not a Siamese spitting cobra then. I understand inside the house is not funny. Not at all. Outside you can scare them away with water spray or have proper tools to get them off. Snakes is great to have nearby, but not on your doorstep or inside the house.

Just once, back in 2006, we took the kids into Hat Yai for the new year countdown. The city block off several blocks in the town centre with music stages at intersections, there are food stalls and lots of people. There came a point in the evening where the crowds were that dense I was concerned that given any disturbance a panicked crowd could cause a fatal stampede.

I lived in Bangkok for 3 years, on Sukhumvit Soi 2, I used to be out all hours of the night, but never drunk, I have lived down here in Phuket ever since, there was only one time which was a  few years back I thought I was about to get mugged early one morning outside a 7/11, When I walked into the 7 I noticed these two shady <deleted> walking about, they just stood out, anyway I got my stuff and went out to get on my bike, and from nowhere they came right across the carpark to ask me the time, No body ask you the time these days, my instincts kicked in, as they were right along side of me, I didn't pull my phone out of my pocket I just looked at my watch and spoke in Thai to them, they looked at me and backed off, real shady! and it was 7 in the morning, Maybe if I had pulled my phone out of my pocket they would have snatched it, expensive phone, a few thousand baht to them,

Thailand is very safe.  Apart from when driving!

Nope, TH or any other place in the world.

Only once when dealing with the village "Electrician" and his attempts at wiring an ELCB.  His idea of an earth circuit left a lot to be desired...

Naah hardly....

They were deceived/judging by my gray hair....I out maneuvered them....It was close proximity & I dodged around the # 1 positioned lead man - he telegraphed the scenario....I could still make that move today @78 in that particular set of circumstances....

Only when driving on Thai roads................😬

The only time I feel at risk is when I get in my car or on my motorcycle and hit the Thai roads. I never feel unsafe on the streets, even in Bangkok late at night, but then again I'm not a big boozer and I don't walk around drunk out of my mind. I also avoid wearing valuables when out in public and do everything I can to discourage crimes of opportunity.

I did have a few confrontations when I lived on Samui, but I must admit I was behaving disrespectfully toward reckless drivers, so I take responsibility for that. A quick apology and a pronam was all it took to diffuse the situation.

Once while in a movie theater on Samui I approached a man whose kids were running around the theater like wild monkeys making all kinds of noise, and asked him if he could keep his kids quiet. He got so offended he threatened me to a duel outside the mall, which I avoided. The problem is in Thailand if you kick someone's ass you lose, and if you get your ass kicked you lose, so there's no upside in engaging physically with a Thai, under any circumstances, unless you're doing it to defend your life or the life of your loved ones.

But that is Samui, and in my opinion you have some of the most lowlife locals in all of Thailand on that lowly island.
