An investigation is underway as the director of Bangkok Remand Prison (BRP) and several guards are accused of giving preferential treatment to Chinese inmates. Allegations include access to electric appliances and arranging visits from Chinese sex workers. Thai prisoners reported these practices, claiming that Chinese inmates had a more comfortable existence within the prison.

Complaints detailed that Chinese prisoners hired Thai inmates who could speak Chinese as servants. Allegations further included that the inmates paid for unauthorized access to items such as microwaves and air conditioners, and influenced prison staff to suit their needs. Accusations involved the arrangement of sex worker visits, with a hidden room beneath a staircase used for these purposes.

On November 16, a special operations unit raided three prison zones with Chinese nationals but found no immediate evidence of misconduct, raising suspicions of a tip-off. Despite this, the raid discovered electric appliances and prohibited items, along with evidence of sexual activity, reinforcing the allegations.

Following these findings, BRP director Manop Chomchuen and 14 guards were reassigned pending a thorough investigation. This incident draws parallels to previous claims by former inmate Ekkachai Hongkangwan, who alleged that Chinese prisoners paid bribes to live comfortably during his time at BRP in 2022-2023.

The Department of Corrections initially denied such claims but will now further investigate the matter. The focus remains on understanding the extent of corruption and ensuring transparency in prison operations, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • BRP director and guards are investigated over alleged inmate favoritism.
  • Chinese prisoners reportedly paid for unauthorized comforts and visits.
  • Evidence collected supports claims, leading to temporary staff reassignment.

UPDATE
VIP Chinese Inmates Met Models in Altered Prison Room

An investigation into alleged special privileges for Chinese inmates at Bangkok Remand Prison has intensified after it emerged that a guards’ room had been modified to host private meetings between two VIP Chinese prisoners and two Chinese models. The discovery has prompted immediate scrutiny of prison operations, with authorities confirming that the meetings took place in broad daylight and outside designated visitation areas. The revelation has raised concerns over security breaches and improper conduct within the facility.

The case came to light as Justice Minister Pol. Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat met a fact-finding committee on 21 November, during which he confirmed that the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) would join the probe. Approximately 300 Chinese inmates are currently held at the prison and two of them, both in pre-trial detention, have already been transferred after their involvement in the meetings was uncovered. Seven guards and officials were identified as having assisted in bringing the two models into the modified room, located below the prison commander’s office.

Investigators have recovered partial CCTV data despite attempts to erase the footage, with clips showing inmates walking in prohibited areas. Ruttapol said the evidence was sufficient to support the allegations but could not confirm how many times the two women had met the inmates. He added that the two models, both Chinese nationals, had used a normal route into the building and did not enter the family visitation area.

Authorities have interviewed the models, recorded their photographs and checked their passports, but it is unclear whether they are now still in Thailand. The Thai News Room reported that the women had said they had met officers in the area where they were later escorted to the modified room, suggesting coordination with prison staff. When asked whether more women had been brought in for similar purposes, Ruttapol said investigators currently had information only about the two involved in this incident.

Concerns have also been raised over the safety of the undercover officer who exposed the misconduct, but officials confirmed that he remains safe. The investigation is expected to expand as the DSI works with the Anti-Money Laundering Office to determine whether wider networks or financial irregularities are connected to the case. Officials have indicated that all those involved will face accountability as evidence is reviewed.

Investigators will continue analysing the recovered CCTV data and questioning staff who may have participated in unauthorised access arrangements. Further scrutiny is expected over how the room was altered and the extent of privilege afforded to certain inmates. Authorities have signalled that more disciplinary action is possible as the inquiry moves forward.

Key Takeaways

• Two VIP Chinese inmates met Chinese models in a modified room at Bangkok Remand Prison.

• Seven guards and officials are implicated, with CCTV evidence partly recovered despite tampering.

• The DSI and Anti-Money Laundering Office are now jointly investigating potential wider misconduct.

It is often heard that Chinese are the elite class of Thailand and not only VIP, but also VVIP exists – should one be surprised if that is also the case in prisons...:whistling:

Visions of Tony crouched under the staircase with a smile on his face.😀

So, the guilty have been 'reassigned', to be replaced by another group that will likely be equally corrupt.  Rearranging the deck chairs . . .

Who would have thought, with Thailand's "clean" reputation there'd be corruption in the prison system...bugger me, this could tarnish Thailand's squeaky clean image...555

From what I hear from supposedly reliable sources, this happens throughout the world. If you have money you can get just about anything in prison, in just about any country of the world.

Prisons these days with the exception perhaps of some Scandinavian countries have no interest in reform, and are basically animal cages run by highly corrupt officials.

Your so called informant and your uneducated remarks that all prisons around the world are corrupt are really stupid.

I was a Corrections Officer in New Zealand for 25 years .

And I can tell you that there is no corruption in New Zealand prisons.

Moderators should delete your post.

Objectively speaking, do you think that new Zealand prisons might be the exception to the rule?

I have heard this comment so many times," From what I hear from supposedly reliable sources, this happens throughout the world", and 99% of the time its total bull..<deleted>" Mr spidermike007.

Are their any government institutions in Thailand where there is no illegal activities. I believe there isn't. Just to mention a few: schools where the headmaster cuts children’s Govt funded lunches and keeps the excess Govt. money, planning Depts. selling Govt land and designated national parks to developers, national parks keeping the falang fees to nest their own nest. Plus the Govt. politicians who use their power to get away with anything and the most corrupt mass mafia being the Thai RTP. Need I continue..... on and on pick any Govt department, I am sure  100% there is fraud going on and the larger the organisation the larger the fraud.

Okay so are you saying that most prison officials throughout the world are honest and straight, and do not provide favors in exchange for money?

Please clarify. If you're going to dispute a presumption that is certainly fair, but by all means offer some evidence.
