Western food and Thai supermarkets

Featured Replies

During past couple of weeks I've noticed that Big C (at least the one I go to) has shut down its 'Foreign Imports' aisle - and the various items were being sold off in the discount bins. Foodland used to be a favorite for some western foods, but it seems frozen in time and in some locations it has closed the deli counters. Villa still seems to stock quite a bit of Western food - but you gotta grab that cranberry sause and other Xmas foods before the Americans empty the shelves for their thanksgiving next week. The expansive food floors in the big shopping centres like Paragon and Central are fancy, but it's all the same stuff you could buy at Tops Market - just more of it stacked higher/wider. Lotus is all tetrapak stuff, with little to no western foods other than Heinz since Tesco left..

This is just an observation. But I don't see many Western choices at supermarkets anymore - indeed less these days. Any other Western specialty markets?

  • Anybody worrying about foreign imported foods in Thailand has to consider the market effect of the border closure with Cambodia as it affects supply and demend.

  • I don't get the Cambodia part..

The Big Cs i go to in Pattaya still have foreign imports aisle, they are usually discounting items close to BBD

Yes, but this is different. The whole aisle(s) gone. The sign that said Imported Foods (or whatever) is gone too. All food products that were there are being dumped into discount bins. I also noticed they stopped selling Coleman's products and some other UK brands recently and also Magnolia dairy products - both imported (actually, I'm not sure about the latter if it is imported or made here - though it's a HK or Singapore parent I think).

Where are  you talking about? Maybe specific to that location

Outside Bkk, Pattaya, HuaHin Chiang Mai & Phuket, there is very little falang food on sale in the big ones. As experienced in Phitsanulok, Ayuttahya and Roi Et.

Sadly, I must agree with your comment about the former Tesco-Lotus, now Lotus's.  Many great European and other non-China-made products have disappeared since Tesco-Lotus reverted to the previous ownership.  The recent "death" of Gourmet Market in Hua Hin is also a great loss.

I do most of my shopping now at Villa Market, which seems to have a better range of quality Thai and European (as well as Australian and New Zealand) produce.

I think I know which one you're talking about. They have changed everything around. The foreign goods section has now gone. You can still find many imported products if you wander about.

Can take a while though.

There seems to be very little efficient organisation.

Yesterday I bought dark chocolate digestives. Buy 1 get 1 free.

Yes, exactly. Not sure how long you've lived in Thailand, but you might remember Carrefour, the French supermarket chain that had a big presence in Thailand (and China). It left Thailand at least 10 years ago, and Big C sort of took over its remaining stores, and was keeping some of the excellent European products Carrefour had become know for. Big C called it Big C 'Extra' - I think the name is still around. But my main point is the slow withdrawal of western foods from Thailand (aside from sauces and spices). At least I see this in Bangkok.

Yes, it's true if you look hard enough, mixed in with the local goods, you can still find the odd foreign item mixed in the main aisles (like the chocolate digestives). But generally sspeaking, if you walk down the biscuits aisle or the chocolate aisle, these finds are few and far between - maybe Oreo and some Hershey and Swiss chocolate. Not much else - ok Campbels horrible, cheap soup is there... And this is in Bangkok - aside from Pattaya and Hua Hin and maybe Phuket this is pretty depressing for the country's capital and biggest city.. Is there simply not a market/business case to import? Given the strong baht against the USD, it makes me wonder (also why prices on wine, for example, hasn't dropped.)

Nothing prevents Villa or any other market from keeping these "Western" foods  in stock all the time.

Campbell's is slowly exiting the soup business.     They want to concentrate on sauces.

Villa tends to be hit and miss IMO. Some of the big locations like Sukhumvit Road near Em Quartier and K-Village are big and good, many of the others are smaller and lacking quite a bit. And of course it's expensive - maybe 15-20% more for many things. No real competition for western foods.

My local Lotus Fresh had Aussie beef on sale yesterday, expensive, reduced to 145bht for a decent steak, had it last night and it was good.

Really good meat section, their pork steaks are really good as well, no foreigners but me shopping there.

Big C Extra Pattaya still seems to have a decent imported foods section.

I hope Big C Kanchanaburi does not go the same way .

That is my go to " expat shop " nothing else within a 2 ½ - 3 hour drive away.

It has but since long they are in a provisional status. Big rebuild plans as they show on the signs.

Wandering around is the point.

Cold cuts, air dried sausage/ham, salami etc spread all over the shop. Similar for cheese. It's a maze.

No mention of Friendship? (if this is about Pattaya?).

Best lamb chops for a decent price.

Headline is completely true for BigC in Khon Kaen.

Assortment down, prices up.

Hardly worth a visit.

TOPS the only source.

Bit better in Udon Thani.

Well it looks like my fears may have come true.

Took a trip to stock up today.
No Mushy Peas

No Jacob's Cream Crackers

No Hob nobs

No thick fruit and nut chocolate.
Looks like it is back to Internet shopping.

Right. My fear too. So it's probably corporate-wide decision. Maybe central Bangkok (e.g. opposite Central World), Pattaya, and Phuket will be the last to have a foreign imports aisle. Big-C is really the only choice for many - yes, we have Villa in Bangkok and several other places. But Big-C is really the only big supermarket of its class - Lotus's is disappointing and mostly aisles of tetrapak. The big places in the expensive shopping malls are basically just glorified Tops, same stuff just more of it. Foodland hasn't innovated in years - Took Lae Dee is their saving grace. So yeah, online shopping again. Not a big fan of that for food items.

LOL - now, after mentioning Tops in the above post, my laptop is full of Tops adverts and other Central Pattana ads..

70bht free delivery, 425gm of Cream Crackers, identical to Jacob's

Also sold in Lotus Fresh stores in smaller packets, but not on the biscuits shelf, hidden over the ice cream freezer, God knows why (maybe Thais eat them as ice cream wafers).

Why?

Why?

Really bro?

Pretty much just shows how irrelevant expats are to the Thai economy, contrary to those that think we support it somehow, and it would crumble if we all left :cheesy:

Expats can't even keep the shelves stocked with items specifically targeted for them.  Catering to expats is bad business for most vendors and chains out of the tourist areas.

Not enough expat money to keep basic food items on the shelf ... :cheesy:

Well here, if container costs rise because volume is dropping, do you continue less profitable lines?

Around CM heaps of possibilies to buy Farang food.

Serveral Rimping, Tops, GO, Makro, Yok.
