yes, I love that place, and we often go there for a night or two. Used to be a quite good American pizza restaurant there before covid, and unfortunately he disappeared. But yes, love to stay at the riverside in the walking street. Best place to sit in the window and have my morning coffee, and as well a good bakery who also serves the best breakfast to next to the river. So one of my favorite destinations in Thailand when it is not high season, or holidays. To crowded those days

Being a country bumpkin, the 4 most boring cities I experienced when living in Thailand were:

Bangkok

Nongkhai

Udon Thani

Pattaya.

Shock that you found Nong Khai boring. When was the last time you were there?

I have to give Pattaya for the Night life and restaurants as well some few good live music scenes, and I do not think of the cover band places in walking street 😉

Pattaya is also affordable, but as many other places, to crowded now with to much, whatever it is. The golden years is gone for Phuket, Jomtien and Pattaya for my taste.

Fortunately, Pattaya has a number of other neighborhoods to choose from if those above are too crowded for some, including Wongamat, Cozy, and different neighborhoods on the Darkside.

6 years ago, I lived in Khon Kaen, Isaan, for 7 years and prior to that 13 years in Phayao City, Lanna.

I'm a bit to old for the club scene now, so I'm okay, and Bangkok got a better restaurant scene than ever before. More in to live jazz these days, and not so much DJ's, Hip Hop techno electronic anymore.

The  drive between Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai is pure torture.

I did that a few times, once in a car and a few times on motorbike,a great ride with great views!

A lot of nice corners and turns but not everyone would agree i think.

You live in the city ?

Quite a lot of foreigners lately there. Never seen so many foreigners while visiting the immigration and Robinson as well Makro and the construction shops.

For the uneducated and uncool, I'm referring to Chiang Mai, of course.

Bet you've been here ages and ages to speak so cool.

That must have been entertaining in such a sleepy city. Never spent a night out there except night marked once.

Thai cities in general, (Ampher Muang / capital cities) unless living there, and know all the little nooks & crannies (best spots), then yea, can be very boring if just visiting.   Unless doing a lot of research, before arriving, which we do, for food & coffee shops.  Still boring, and why we usually avoid.

Unless just a convenient pit stop.   Saying that, most city's congestion, rarely make them convenient.  Need to sneak in before rush hour.  Our usual, check in, then hopefully walking distance to some good munchies, or we hit ol' dependable, and always convenient, 7-11, and or vendor near most of them.

Udon Thani is a great city, but we also lived there for 17 years and knew it well.  Actually avoided where most expats & visitors would frequent, as pretty poor offerings, with a few exceptions.

Bangkok of course is excellent, but chose your area wisely, so no need to be in traffic, or even on the rail lines, as all very congestions.  And that's almost all day & night, not just rush hour lately.  We only go there to visit daughter now.

We only go to Sathorn now, and sadly stay at Ibis, and probably their worst property.   But too convenient, to daughter's condo, and munchies in walking distance.  Any driving, and I leave it up to my daughter, and everything is within 10 mins & has parking, or like me, she won't bother.

I vote Trat.  Fortunately, never had to spend the night.

I've spent a few nights in Trat on my way into or back from Cambodia over the years
there some good hotels, good restaurants and malls

The best cities are the ones with least tourists/expats in my honest opinion
