Brit Stunned at How Much £2.50 Buys in Thailand's 7-Eleven

No, I am not saying this.

However, I like to buy 5Kg bags of premium JASMINE rice, which is sold at the small Lotus, and most other stores such as TOPS and MAKRO.

I have yet to see such products at Seven.

You obviously live in a very nice, yet fairly remote, area, with less noise and traffic.

You should appreciate what you have, and stop worrying about where to buy beer.

Beer can be found almost anywhere in Thailand.

Yes, it is very quiet and peaceful here in't jungle. I know, and said, exactly where I buy my beer, with no worrying at all. Just had 20kg of premium Jasmine rice delivered for Bht 330. Similar is sold at the 7/11, but more expensive.

Great idea, travel all the way to Thailand and buy some Sprite , Skittles and Kinder joy .    Hopefully his next stop will be  Tops supermarket where Western goods are double the back home price

  • Good thing he did not try and buy beer between 2-5 in the afternoon.

  • 7-11 shops should be closed down as a health hazard. So much of their 'food' and drinks are junk food full of chemical additives.

Assuming they're still using sugar to sweeten those drinks instead of say, sucralose à la Coca-Cola

Coca cola uses high fructose corn syrup I believe. Coke zero uses sucralose.

Tell me the brand.

PLEASE.

I pay, routinely, about Bt.245 per FIVE Kilos.

I buy premium jasmine rice.

If I could get 20 kilos for Bt.330, then I would be in Pig Heaven.....

And, maybe, we would see pigs flying around, too.

Anyway, pls name the brand, and the price, and then I will test your Jasmine Rice....

I see.

I can see clearly now....

The image you show is MIXED, as you can plainly see.

IMPORTANT NOTE concerning GRADING of rice quality:

image.png.f9c72814e0f949853f662994ec593ee6.png

Jasmine Rice has a higher protein percentage, by the way, as you can easily check, if you wish.

Each to his own:  If you are seeking a cheaper source of complex carbohydrates, which your body will eventually break down into smaller molecules of sugar, then, by all means, go for the cheapest rice you can find.

I buy premium Jasmine Rice, for the texture and flavor, of course.

I pay a higher price because my discriminating palette seems to demand it.

The rice you buy is good rice.

So, keep on doing what you have been successfully doing, and think nothing more about it.

Anyway, when I say I can See Clearly Now....

I also mean, this:

There are many varieties of rice, including brown rice and white rice, which are the same, minus the germ.

Anyway, EAT WHAT YOU LIKE.....

And, I buy my rice at good quality retailers who give me a fair price....

You cannot go wrong with TOPS, LOTUS, MAKRO, etc....IMHO....

NOTE: Speaking of the germ, and NOT Germs.....

I use Rice Bran Oil, does that count?

At my age I prefer pasta, bread (home-made wholemeal) or chips after years of rice.

If you are counting calories, then...OF COURSE it counts.

Did you think that vegetable oils might not count?

Anyway, at your age, no matter how young you seem to be, you should eat what you like.

The CAVEAT, of course, is SUGAR.

Don't eat sugar.

If you don't believe me, then just listen to Dr. Robert (Sugar) Lustig.

At Seven, you will find a very high sugar content in much of what is sold, including many of the drinks being sold, etc.

There is nothing wrong with selling sugar, of course.

However, if you wish to know what sugar does to the body, then you can watch some of Dr. Lustig's great vids....of presentations he has given at major unis.

Bottom Line:  Eat what you like.  We only live twice.

Somebody should explain to him that an average Thai salary is maybe 1/10 or less of the Western salaries. That should also be taking into account when comparing prices.

On the other end of the price scale, the cars are 50 -100% more expensive than in Europe. And all imported things like cheese and wine and other western products are much more expensive than in his home country. Let him try to buy a small jar of Marmite and see what he thinks then.

I remember the days in Thailand when I was of a similar age when the equivalent of 2 pound 50 got you half a dozen beers, a short time and a taxi home.

There were no such places as 7-11 to waste your money in.

Kids...............

More pre 1870 I would think.

See now! A Brit comes to Thailand and discovers it´s cheap. Then all Brits on this forum immediately go out in force and tell how wrong he is, as you guys live on a bare minimum!

Just face it, it is cheap here, for people who can afford to live in another country. But you guys just chose to move to Thailand and complain. You are a complete farce and a disgrace to normal people living in this country, that actually understood the costs of moving.

So you DON'T eat sweets ?

No sugar in coffee ?

No cakes?

No biscuits with your cup of tea or coffee?

My bill came to 711 recently, I made some remark to the cashier.  She had absolutely no idea what I was on about.

Approx 1/3 of a daily minimum wage income that….

One time I went into a Burger King and ordered a Big Mac

the assistant had no idea what I was talking about 😋

A British traveller visiting Thailand was astounded by how far his money went at the local 7-Eleven. During his trip, he decided to see what he could buy with £2.50 (approximately 111 Thai baht

Don't know where you got your exchange rate from but its 103 baht in today's money so put something back on the shelf

Not much you will say but convert his £2.50 to £250 then to £1000 see the difference then
