Anyone take the flight yet through Hong Kong? What is the ground time all about?

You change planes. With a scheduled 2h20m on the ground.

Same plane just re-stocked, refueled etc.

I initially thought the same, check flight radar.

For the last week, including today's imminent arrival, its been the same plane on both legs.

Their appears to be 2 different flights?

One flight says change of terminal, other says ground stop of 2:20.

I am curious as to what happens during the ground stop.

They refuel, kick the tires, restock the food trollies and pump the dunnies.

Oh yes, flight and cabin crew changes out.

No getting of the plane ?

With that length of layover, I would assume a 100% deplaning for transit pax and otherwise. With the OTT security demands of US carriers, there's probably not a lot of time airside as you're shuffled through security. Maybe transit pax are even held at the gate?

I was hoping someone might have first hand knowledge after taking the flight. Thank you!

Off so they can clean it.

Excellent. Thank you.

We took one of the first flights, on October 28 from BKK.

You must get off the plane in HKG with everything you brought on board, go through security, then go wait in the lounge until boarding from the HKG to LAX flight.

You reboard the same plane and go to the same seat you had from BKK to HKG.

Immigration and customs in LAX were very quick.

I appreciate the report. Thank you

You get off, eat, drink, tinkle and get back aboard.

There are two tag flights, HKG-SGN and HKG-BKK, on UA both 789's, with similar arrivals into HKG and departures out to BKK and SGN.

Some segments utilize the same aircraft (tail numbers LAX-HKG/HKG-BKK or SGN), some do not.

    30 Nov 2025    Los Angeles (LAX)    Hong Kong (HKG)    B789 (N13954)    14:59    10:55 PM    11:53 PM    7:00 AM
Landed 6:52 AM
     01 Dec 2025    Hong Kong (HKG)    Bangkok (BKK)    B789 (N26960)    2:20    9:20 AM    9:40 AM    11:25 AM
Landed 11:00 AM

UA has flights SFO-HKG so you might be able to connect to BKK from SFO via HKG.

De-plane, clear security, go to lounge or departure gate.

Yes, I saw those SFO-HKG options are also offered. Decisions, decisions. Thank you

You could ticket a USA-THL ticket - I think, I haven't checked the schedules - from ORD, EWR, IAD, IAH

They don't.

The example you have used is incorrect as the 30th Nov. flight from LAX-HKG arrives in HKG in the morning of 2nd December (leaves LAX close to midnight and crosses the international date line) and carries on to BKK a couple of hours later on the same plane.  The 1st December HKG-BKK you listed was from the day before.

I think some do, some don't - operational flexibility and such.

I'll take a closer look at connecting tail-numbers and follow up.

That was the same error I made👍

For the (most recent/current) 15 days I can check, UA has used the same aircraft to fly LAX-HKG, and HKG-BKK (+2).

And they've used the same aircraft on the returning segments (UA 821)

Not sure why, exactly? I am curious.

For the HKG - SGN sector they use a different aircraft, from LAX-HKG. (UA 152).

No they don't .  I made the same error.  You got your dates ass-backwards.

Just a guess but it could just be for the bragging rights to say we've got the only direct flight from USA to Thailand.

Not so important for SGN as Vietnam Airlines fly there from SFO.
