People do not commit suicide like this, particularly 69 year old males.

Actually they do. Have been a few cases of this method over the years. First one I remember was a guy (Wayne T) who had bar on Soi PO in the 80's.  And there were others around that time.

(The plastic bag over the head and secured around the neck still gives a bit of time to put the handcuffs on behind the back, and then its just a matter of a few minutes).

  • Yep. Obvious suicide. Hands cuffed behind own back and plastic bag tied over the head is a very popular form of suicide. What a ridiculous statement.

Seems that those who want to make suicide, they study and know how to do it properly. Doesn't makes it less suspect if course.

But seriously, if you where to murder someone, would you leave handcuffs on or the plastic bag? You rather remove anything that connects it to a murder, or at least camouflage the incident as much as possible.

Suffocating inside a big plastic bag is painless as well.

Been freediving and passed out twice just by breath old. Just like a sliding door, and dark another time just bliss,

Seems sad that guys come to the land of smiles to commit suicide 😢

I remember Wayne and his bar on Soi PO.  He died in a Soi 4 hotel in Bangkok.

Didn't a famous Hollywood actor meet a similar fate at a Bangkok Hotel (closet)?

No, that was Michael Hutchence, lead singer of INXS, found dead 'by self inflicted hanging' in Nov 1997 in a hotel room in Syds.

Mental health among expats and many tourists ? And the rollercoasters some here trow themselves at, and then add poor health and  economy?

For those of you who are having trouble picturing how this works, the person will lock the cuffs over one wrist, put the bag over the head and wrap duct tape around the neck, and then reach behind and cuff the other wrist before suffocation panic kicks in. Not a nice way to go, but effective.

Is it not less traumatic to use a shotgun?

Or.... deep slit in both wrists and relax in the bathtub Frank Pentangeli style?

Asking for a friend.

Suggest you visit your local medical library. Look at the reference manuals and textbooks for post mortem exams, and sexual deviancy as well as forensic psychiatry. Elderly males are very unlikely to commit suicide in this manner. Tell you what, if this is a thin man and with good mobility,  you can make a case. However, if he is the typical  Jomtien elderly American he will have reduced mobility and be obese and therefore less able to undertake this elaborate process. It is far easier to consume pills or poisonous potions after consuming large amounts of alcohol.  Handcuffing and suffocation of victims is a much more common event.

As I stated previously, there are a lot of details missing from the story that prevent any conclusion being made.

I'm not here to make conclusions, believe or argue. I'm listening

Depression is horrible and some creative souls, have made some fantastic suicides before.

Wasn't there a Norwegian with cancer, who put fire to himself and with a long rope around his neck. And also read about multiple suicides with hands tied behind.

I have read and been told it is to make sure they succeed.

Suspect, sure, but tragic no matter what, and see what we think doesn't matter. It is what police thinks that matters

As I wrote today around 2 pm I was nearby B2 Jomtien and saw plenty of police officers, immigration officers, two BMW smart car and an ambulance drive into the hotel parking. Just coincidence, maybe.

I heard they are still looking for a suspect

David Carradine. Auto erotic asphyxiation.

Unlikely, I agree. but not impossible.

That was David Carradine at the Nai Lert Hotel. His death was attributed to auto erotic asphyxiation

I really hope they find out the reason for this case.

CCTV should let the police know more i guess.

Huh? Houdini certainly might have been able to cuff his hands behind his back, but I don't think the average person could. I think that 99% of the police departments around the world would conclude foul play. Thailand is one of the few places in the world where the police would even suggest self-inflicted harm, and how much do you think that has to do with PR and tourism?

My first thought was that it couldn't be done.  But just thinking about it and sort of trying I think it would be pretty easy to cuff your own hands behind your back.

As odd as it may seem, this actually was a somewhat popular form of suicide among American retirees here about 25 years ago. One guy did it, and then a couple of others copied the method over the next few years - they were all loosely acquainted through the bar scene. Those guys all left suicide notes, though, if I recall.

Quite easy to do as you say . Bag over head and tape or cable tie and cuff on one wrist behind your back and as the other cuff has a hinge open close part it makes it easy to get the other on and close it to a degree where you can't get your hand back out .

RIP sir.

Forensics should be able to determine the cause.  Additionally any cameras showing people entering or exiting the floor and/or room will help.

Unfortunately sometimes people come to Thailand thinking they have left all their problems behind and then soon start accumulating new problems that can overwhelm someone over time.

I think most have meet someone who thinks they got everything under control and can handle the problem until it's to late.  We all know people who remain blind to a problem no matter how obvious it is to the rest of us.

Anyways RIP sir.

What is the picture that's in this report , looks like something in a cardboard box.

When the Police report no disturbance at the scene , little do they know it's the tidy cereal killer .

Looks like the perfect investigation for the Special K force.

David Carradine via auto-erotic asphyxiation. Not really what this seems like for various reasons from the article, mostly him being clothed, but you never know.

Two Lima Bravos were with him and bailed....
