Foreign Tourist's Reckless Stunt in Phuket Sparks Outrage

Featured Replies

Every day another topic about a foreigner misbehaving and the outrage it causes. Which is totally understandable. But I wonder why Thailand is still promoting tourism as it seems to me that they, besides the money they bring,  rather see them leave than come. I don't know of any country where there is daily a news topic about foreigners mishaving.  If you don't want the tourist stop promoting Thailand as the ultimate holiday country.  You will always get these idiots who drink too much and do things you don't like.  They don't know how to, or just wont, behave and respect what Thai people like and do not like. They don't care and are selfish idiots. And of course 99% of the tourists are ok, but putting the 1% in the spotlight every day will at some point backfire on Thailands reputation.  They might consider it bashing of the foreigners. And again the Thai are right about it. But it just does not bring the message "that they should learn to behave" by drawing attention to it every day over and over again. It seems counter productive.

Frankly it’s a shame he never fell out. Idiots like this need to be sought, arrested and have the crap scared out of them. Maybe then they’ll understand Thailand doesn’t tolerate childish <deleted> who don’t now how to behave like adults.

Once would have been more than enough.

Quality tourist. Waste of a good skin.

If the guy wants to kill himself, it's none of my business.

Good speech did it take long time?

This is the problem with social media these days, you can make a fortune if your video goes viral and this video was probably different and he could easily get 10 million views and earn a small fortune.

I used to do that all the time when I was in Taiwan.

The taxi drivers didn't seem to mind.

It's actually quite possible to easily go out through the rear door window, and then sit on the bottom of the window,...

With the taxi going at standard speed.

I used to do this all the time when the taxi reached the bottom of the mountain where I lived.

I was tired, by then, after coming home from the bars, and so on the ride up the mountain to my house,

I would need some fresh air.

There is nothing like riding in a taxi this way, while climbing the mountain road.

The cool air in one's hair.

At 3AM, or so.

One time though, some driver really got quite pissed-off.

He was the exception.

I think it was not very safe, when I look back on these antics.

I would guess I rode that way, up the mountain road...

About 25 times, without incident.

Then, I tired of my behavior.

And stopped riding this way.

They get a kick out of highlighting foreigners’ stupidity. It kind of says see we’re not the only stupid ones. The so called superior farangs can also be stupid.

your absolutely right, but scooters riding on the wrong side of the road and on sidewalks, overloaded with people happens everyday, the idiot in the taxi, not so much?

A foreign tourist in Phuket has faced fierce criticism after leaning out of a moving taxi on Sunday, 7 December. Thai motorists and social media users condemned the act as hazardous, with the incident captured and shared by another driver following the taxi. People widely circulated the alarming footage, prompting calls for action against both the tourist and the taxi driver.

The video reveals the tourist dangerously extending his body out of the passenger window, all while being filmed by his friend in the back seat. Unexpectedly, the taxi driver records the incident as he manoeuvres on a winding road. Concerns regarding safety were raised, as viewers could hear the Thai motorist chastising the participants for their irresponsible behaviour.

Public outcry followed the video's release, with demands for immediate repercussions. Many are urging the police to initiate an investigation, while others have appealed to the Land Transport Department to potentially revoke the driver's licence. Comments poured in, expressing anger and disbelief at the situation.

Although no specific legal provisions address this type of behaviour in Thailand, it may be classified as "reckless conduct" if it poses danger or leads to an accident. The consequences could vary, depending on the severity of the outcome. Local police have yet to provide any statement or take concrete measures relating to the incident, which took place in Patong.

The reckless act has drawn comparisons to a recent situation in Pathum Thani, where a Thai woman was seen jumping onto the bonnet of a moving car. The vehicle's slow speed prevented her from sustaining serious injuries, but it caused damage to the car. This incident also gained significant attention online, highlighting concerns about behaviours that risk public safety.

Key Takeaways

  • Foreign tourist criticised for leaning out of moving taxi in Phuket.
  • Public calls for action against both the tourist and the taxi driver.
  • Legal action remains possible under reckless conduct laws.
