BTS Refutes Rabbit Card Ban: KYC Rules Apply Equally to All

Bangkok's BTS has responded to rumours about alleged bans on Rabbit Cards, asserting that all users are subject to the same Know Your Customers (KYC) rules. Online speculation suggested that politicians from Thailand's southern provinces and nationals from certain high-risk countries had their cards blocked. BTS clarified these claims, highlighting its commitment to equitable service across all passengers.

The controversy emerged after Kannavee Suebsang of the Movement Party raised concerns about BTS services, questioning changes reportedly affecting users from Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and specific countries. BTS underscored that its regulations, including KYC identity checks, are consistent with Thailand’s Anti-Money Laundering laws. These procedures aim to safeguard cardholders and ensure service continuity, not target specific groups.

BTS explained that while all passengers can update their KYC details at station ticket offices, those flagged by risk assessments might need further verification at the Phaya Thai station. This process applies to both new and existing Rabbit Card users. The company stressed these requirements are legal obligations rather than discriminatory practices and appreciated the cooperation of passengers in upholding system safety and transparency.

Kannavee commented he had sought clarification since January 1, 2026, about the alleged restrictions impacting service conditions. Reports alleged that a Myanmar national’s card had been blocked, prompting demands for a public explanation. Kannavee, concerned about the potential for discrimination, emphasised the need for antidiscrimination laws applicable to the private sector.

He questioned the basis for identifying high-risk countries and the connection to political affiliations. Kannavee sought clarity on the criteria used, pointing out that passengers could still travel with alternative tickets, challenging the efficacy of the restrictions. He also urged for details on any official announcements, approval processes, and refund policies for affected users, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • BTS denies any discriminatory ban on Rabbit Cards, highlighting KYC rules.

  • Kannavee Suebsang demands answers following reports of targeted restrictions.

  • BTS insists procedures are legal compliance steps, not aimed at specific groups.

Anti money laundering on subway cards? Don't people put pocket change onto these things? Money launderers operate in large quantities - what's next? They'll be calling for the banning of 1000 and 50

I really don't understand why people put money in non-interest paying accounts, like rabbit card , True money and others, when they everywhere can pay with prompt pay from their bank account

Anti money laundering on subway cards?

Don't people put pocket change onto these things?

I was able to "re-register" my three (3) BTS Rabbit cards at the Phaya Thai Rabbit Service Center.

There were two reps there and no other customers. As others have mentioned, scanning my U.S. passport was unsuccessful so they had to key in the details (three times) on those mini-PoS terminals.

I've been able to top-up all three cards since re-registration.

I still can't add more than one card to the My Rabbit app. Using the NFC starts to validate then I get an "Unable to proceed, info mismatch" message.

I had to produce my passport at BTS Phrom Phong recently in order to top up my card. Is this now required when topping up at a station office every time?

You can have a balance of 4,000 baht on a Rabbit Card. You can use the card at plenty of places e.g. 7-Eleven, not only for travel. It might take a while, but you could push a fair bit of cash through over time. I keep a balance of 1-2k because I often use mine at coffee shops etc. that offer discounts and bonus offers.

Everywhere? 7-Eleven do not accept Prompt Pay.

Not only a passport required to top up. I was asked for phone number and email account. Just an excuse for more surveillance.

I really don't understand why people put money in mobile plans, like AIS, True and others, when they everywhere can use free Wi-Fi from local temple.

Did we really get to the point of discussing how much monthly interest you might get on a few 100 THB from a savings account in a Thai bank?

Yea, the 1% interest on 4000 bath is a life changing event.

No we got to the point of the convenience of using one payment app which you can use everywhere, instead of 5 for different stores.

And while you don't care about the 100 baht interest, from your obvious small amount in your savings account, you don't want to miss out on the 5 baht discount at 7/11 by using True money.

But the 5 baht savings at 7/11 seems to be a life-changing event to you.

Is the 100 baht life changing in your world.

I never said that, I prefer the convenience of using a single app for payments everywhere. For you in contrast the 5 baht savings seem to be a life changing event, for which you want to go through the inconvenience of depositing money in multiple apps.

I just looked at my IRA. I’m not worried about interest on 4000 baht.

But missing out on the 5 baht savings, unless you go through the inconvenience of using multiple apps, seems to worry you.

On a side note, you are the first who makes it to my ignore list after only 2 weeks on the forum. Maybe you can tell me your previous username, so I can that one delete from the list

They literally just did call for this last week. Well, one party called to cease the 1000 baht notes.

Just more big brother...

They are learning from China's social credit system. Don't like your non-conforming politics or perceived bad behaviour or some other reason, then your travel "priveleges" are cancelled. Will be even worse once CBDC is all that is available.

Apparently they still haven't published the criteria for needing to redo the KYC for an existing Rabbit card. I wonder why?

Mine still works fine so far, but I've seen plenty of reports of people having to redo the registration of their passport when attempting to top up.

Can only tell you don't know me at all. But, each to their own. Make sure to have different SIM cards in your phone (in case any has no signal) and carry always charged powerbank in case you run out of juice when you need to pay.

Yes, that's right - that's why I mentioned it - the absurdity level is off the charts with some of these politicians. Anything to grab a news headline I guess.

The company stressed these requirements are legal obligations rather than discriminatory practices

happened to my rabbit card, but not my MRT card, if it's a legal obligation surely it applies to both?

...and they wanted my phone number, said i didn't have a thai one, offered my uk one (obviously not the real one) but said no and wanted my email address instead, so i gave them a fake one. just shows what a charade this is.
