Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, a prime ministerial candidate from Thailand's New Alternative Party, caused a stir with his proposal to acquire up to 10 nuclear warheads, claiming it would enhance national security. With elections looming in February, Mongkolkit's Facebook post quickly went viral, generating mixed reactions. Many netizens criticized the idea as impractical, questioning the feasibility and necessity of such a plan.

His post mentioned that small nuclear warheads could cost US$20 million, equating to 640 million baht per device, and argued this expenditure was modest compared to other military expenditures. Mongkolkit believes that possessing nuclear capabilities would boost Thailand's military and economic security, influencing global trade dynamics and enforcing respect from ASEAN countries. However, military experts have dismissed the proposal as unrealistic.

The ThaiArmedForce website, specializing in defense issues, condemned the proposal, citing the near-impossibility of obtaining nuclear weapons, which require domestic development and controlled uranium access. Additionally, they pointed out the extensive international opposition and logistical challenges Thailand would face, such as testing locations. This proposal follows a previous controversial suggestion by Mongkolkit to ban sex for individuals under 22 to control HIV transmission, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Mongkolkit's proposal for nuclear weapons was met with widespread criticism.

  • Experts argue the plan is impractical, highlighting issues with development and international opposition.

  • Mongkolkit has a history of controversial proposals, influencing public perception.

If this is the caliber of Thai trying to get elected to a MP god forbid the next goverment

Seeing as having Nukes is the only thing that stops the 'worlds policeman' from kidnapping your elected leader bombing you to submission or regime change...it's probably a good idea !

And Thailand has had an 'experimental' reactor in Bangkok for years.

Thailand in fact has 2 Reactors (OAP): Located in Chatuchak, used for producing medical and food preservation isotopes.  and (TINT): Located near Bangkok (in Ongkharak) nuclear research, including gamma irradiation, electron beams, neither can be used to creat nukes and it is ridiculous for Thailand to have nukes when it cannot support its poor waste of money

I don't think 10 nuclear warheads just for Thailand are good. It would be better to have 5 warheads for Thailand and 5 for Cambodia.

Oh yes, don't forget: also one for Vatican City to defend the Catholic faith.

Unfortunately it's a consequence of the new world police that more and more countries are thinking about nuclear. Non proliferation is in the bin.

Ukraine was stripped of nukes and look what happened to them.

And you can bet that there will be sellers.

If one is afraid of Thailand handling nukes, better don't look at Pakistan.

Brilliant! Test them on the Cambodian border, which also solves the problem of who owns the border temples - they'll all be irradiated for hundreds of years. Cambodia can be wiped off the map and this would solve border issues. Let those tests blow nuclear clouds to Esarn and get rid of the uneducated people, automatically raising PISA score averages.

Nukes are not stopping Ukraine from destroying Russia’s power grid and oil infrastructure.

Also an example of a candidate that does not want to win.

If he's serious, then its the most stupid political idea for Thailand , also the banning sex under 22 yrs old to stop HIV, they are doing it at 11 and 13, issuing free condoms might be a better idea along with some HIV education.
