Police in Phuket have raided a cannabis shop in Chalong and seized 68 processed cannabis products after discovering the outlet was operating with an expired licence. The operation resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man identified only as Abu Bakr, who was present as the shop’s caretaker at the time of the inspection. Authorities said the case highlights ongoing enforcement against unlicensed cannabis sales and the sale of prohibited products.

The raid took place on 8 January 2026 after Chalong Police Station received public complaints about a cannabis shop located near a major shopping centre in Chalong subdistrict, Mueang district, Phuket. The shop was alleged to be selling processed cannabis products such as brownies, jelly sweets and chocolate without proper authorisation. Following the complaints, police officers coordinated with officials from the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office to carry out an inspection.

During the search of the shop, identified as Candies By We Love Cannabis, officers seized cannabis flower buds, sales equipment and more than 68 processed cannabis items, including brownies, jellies and chocolate products. Abu Bakr presented a licence for the sale or processing of cannabis flower buds to officials. However, authorities found that the licence had already expired and was no longer valid at the time of the inspection.

As a result, police arrested the caretaker and informed him of the charge of selling a controlled herb, specifically cannabis flower buds, for commercial purposes without permission. The charge was laid under the Protection and Promotion of Thai Traditional Medicine Wisdom Act B.E. 2542. The suspect was taken into custody for further legal proceedings in accordance with Thai law.

Officials used the case to reiterate warnings to cannabis shop operators across Phuket and other provinces. Authorities stressed that all businesses must strictly comply with regulations governing the sale and processing of cannabis products. They also underlined that cannabis must not be sold to children or young people under any circumstances.

Matichon reported the case reflects continued scrutiny of cannabis-related businesses following complaints from the public and concerns over unregulated sales. Enforcement agencies indicated that inspections would continue, particularly where licences have expired or where processed cannabis products are sold without authorisation. Further legal steps will proceed in line with existing legislation.

Simple policing. Not difficult. So why doesn't this happen a bit more often? Rhetorical question of course. 🤓

This is a great step towards re-establishing a thriving black market of unregulated products. Bonus points, as unregulated markets tend not to respect age laws, so the kids will have even more access. Such wisdom!

One of many shop owners who will not meet the new requirements but refuse to close.

I wonder if we see a few laughing police with chocolate covered lips at a later date.
