Maybe try reading the article, in the opening paragraph;

“The incidents, which also affected convenience stores at some sites”

So it was not missed from the article.

Was using my phone and my eyes are not as good as they were. No specific mention of 7-11 though which I still find a bit strange?

I wonder if there's any significance to the fact that they hit 11 PTT Stations.

As I recall from working in S. Thailand, that's not the only brand available.

So now back tracking.

The initial report was written within hours of a developing incident, when the areas was secured and locked down by security forces and information was still being gained.

The article clearly reflects all the reports in the Thai media, yet you seem obsessed it only said convenience store and not 7/11.

Troll post removed.

Ok, and that one is not proven in international court? Is it an illegal land swap, that can be contested in court? If so, that´s the way to go. If not deport, all of them should be jailed and should be treated like terrorists.

You would like it to be that simple, but it is not.

That's quite an escalation, and I think it would be fair to say that the current government (now in caretaker/election mode) hasn't given a lot of attention to the South.

Nothing about religion here, they want independency. Lear history about these 3 provinces.

The 3 provinces were originally part of Malaysia. I lived in hat yai from 2003 to 2008. Quite the time to be there. A good friend of mine died in one of the bombings. He heard the first bomb go off up the street. Went out to see what happened and stood beside one of the bikes hiding a bomb. If I was there I would have been standing beside him when it went off. I was on my way to meet him for dinner. Quite scary. Some crazy memories of that night for me.

Luckily for me I wanted to smoke before I left. Which delayed my arrival to about 2 or 3 minutes after the bombs finished.

A similar thing happened to me.

I would have been right next to the sea on Patong beach at the time the tsunami struck as that is where I took my daily walk.

But on a whim I decided to go on a trip to England a week before, so that was lucky for me but unfortunately not for the others who died.

At the time I did not know the sea retreats before the tsunami hit the beach so I would have stood there watching what was going on, we all know better now.

I've seen stories about all the fighting and didn't know why. For historical perspective:

This conflict, which has claimed over 7,000 lives since 2004, has become more complex over time, involving various insurgent factions, some of which reportedly have shifting demands ranging from greater autonomy to an independent Islamic state. Peace negotiations have been intermittent and frequently stalled, with violence continuing to target both Thai security forces and civilians, including teachers, monks, and Muslims perceived as collaborating with the state.

The real roots of the conflict date back to the 19th century with various complex treaties with the Sultan of Pattani, and other influential figures at that time in Northern Malaysia.

Many feel that Thailand took advantage of Malaysia at that time, and Thailand does not seem to have ever expressed a willingness to discuss that.

Killing, maiming and bombings have about as much to do with Islam as white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan have to do with Christianity. They may have attempted to hijack a religion in order to perpetrate their rapes, thefts, kidnappings, and massacres but many of us are not fooled by that nonsense.

These are Godless heathens regardless of what they call themselves.

I live in Narathiwat myself and am grateful to see the curfew having being lifted already. Last night I arrived home late, after the curfew had started, but it looked like many people were either unaware of it or ignored it altogether. Can't keep a people down like that on a whim.

If you're not happy as Muslim in Thailand, you can always move to Malaysia or some other islamic country. No need to delay.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has called for prompt investigations into coordinated attacks on PTT fuel stations in Thailand's Deep South. The incidents, impacting provinces along the southern border, have heightened security concerns, leading to increased measures and investigations. Immediate support for the injured and relief for affected operators are underway as part of the government’s response.

The attacks took place on 12 January 2026, prompting Anutin to meet with key military and security officials. Discussions were held with Lt Gen Narathip Poinok, commander of the Fourth Army Area, and Gen Chaiphruet Duangpraphat, the army chief of staff, to strategize on enhancing security and understanding the motives behind the attacks. The prime minister also held further discussions with Gen Nuttapong Praokaew and Chatchai Bangchuad to expedite legal proceedings and clarify the incidents' background.

The Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) has been instructed to assist the seven injured and coordinate relief efforts for operators affected by the damage. Anutin has urged PTT's chairman, Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, to actively participate in supporting these operators to ensure business continuity. Emphasizing the importance of resilience, Anutin stated that operators should not cease operations, as it would benefit the attackers’ objectives.

Anutin was unable to conclusively label the attacks as terrorism but highlighted the organized nature and the specific targeting across three provinces. Security officials are investigating potential political links and other motives, drawing on historical precedents where violence coincided with extensions of emergency measures. Anutin stressed the need to overhaul intelligence operations to improve their efficacy and prevent such attacks.

Looking forward, with national elections nearing, Anutin emphasized the necessity of maintaining stability throughout the election period. He acknowledged the transition in personnel due to National Children’s Day activities but underscored the continuous responsibility of authorities under the ongoing emergency decree and martial law in certain districts, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Coordinated attacks on PTT stations prompt a security overhaul.

  • Investigations focus on motives, with potential political links explored.

  • Anutin stresses continuity of business operations to resist attacker objectives.

Thai Army Intensifies Hunt After Attacks on Petrol Stations

Security forces in Thailand are actively pursuing suspects involved in coordinated bomb and arson attacks on 11 petrol stations across the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. These attacks, occurring around 1am on Sunday, have prompted an immediate manhunt by authorities looking to apprehend those responsible.

The incidents have drawn significant attention to the ongoing unrest in southern Thailand. Fourth Army Area commander, Lt Gen Norathip Phoinok, indicated that both insurgency and local political tensions are being considered as potential motives. Security forces, including soldiers, police, and Provincial Administration officials, are collaborating to track down the attackers, who are believed to be linked to past criminal activities in the region.

Lt Gen Norathip highlighted a possible connection between the attackers and a previous gold heist in Narathiwat’s Sungai Kolok district. He noted that while the attackers might be part of the same movement, they could belong to different operational cells. The Royal Thai Army, under the command of Gen Pana Klaewplodthuk, has ordered intensified efforts to locate and arrest those involved in the attacks.

Looking forward, the authorities are expected to maintain heightened security measures across the affected regions, with ongoing investigations into the suspects’ identities and affiliations. The incidents underscore the fragile security situation in Thailand's southern border provinces, a region long troubled by separatist insurgencies, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Coordinated attacks were conducted at 11 petrol stations across Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.

  • Authorities are examining links to past criminal incidents and possible insurgency ties.

  • Heightened security measures remain in place as the investigation continues.

Bad karma now affecting Thailand for the sacriligious destruction of Hindu and Buddhist statues on Cambodian soil? I wonder what atrocity or disaster will be next in Thailand.

They were not. They were part of the sovereign Muslim Kingdom of Patani inhabited by indigenous Malay Muslims.

Thai-Malay relations began in the early 15th century.

The roots of the current separatist insurgency in southern Thailand can be traced back to 1785. The Patani Sultanate was annexed as part of Siam in 1902. Siam control was confirmed in the Anglo (British)–Siamese treaty in 1909. These Muslim-majority regions have been the locus of a separatist movement since 1948.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

This was when Malaysia was Malaya, the Poms moved out and gave it to Thailand which wasn't there's to give it way. Sixty years ago I was in the Australian Army and I served in Borneo. Even though we were only there as engineers we were armed as there were still many snipers in the area. This is probablly the same as the Thai - Cambodia problem, it's already been adjudicated by an independent court that it belongs to Cambodia but Thailand doesn't accept tis decision. Then again tell me any decision made by a court that Thailand abided by unless it went their way. There's rumours around that Anutin made this situation worse by big noting himself for the coming election. If that's true he has totally failed in giviving aid where it's neeed most, as he did in Hat Yai when it flooded.

Brits at fault in LOS.

Sounds familiar.

Freedom Fighters: Typically viewed as individuals or groups fighting against oppression, colonial rule, or authoritarian regimes. They are often motivated by a desire for self-determination and political freedom. Their actions are generally aimed at military targets or symbols of oppression, and they may have significant support from their communities. Freedom fighters are often celebrated as heroes by their supporters.

Terrorists: In contrast, terrorists are seen as individuals or groups that use violence and fear to achieve their political or ideological goals. They often target civilians, aiming to create chaos and instill terror in the population. Terrorist acts are characterized by their indiscriminate nature, often resulting in significant civilian casualties.

The rise of the separatist movement in the 1940's was a response to the government of Field Marshall Plaek Phibunsongkhram and Phibun's policy of Thaification which sought to suppress the Thai-Malay language and culture.
