January 30Jan 30 Because home feels like home, and Thailand will never be home to many, even if they stay here many years. Some dislike their native land for one reason or another, and have settled here, again for some reason or another. Mostly it's the younger women they can't get in the west. Some like living where they have more money to spend, unlike back home. Home just feels more like home. Some have family they want to be near in their last years. Some will never see Thailand as home, and are waiting to go back. Some yes, have insurance back home they can't use here, like myself and other Americans who have Medicare. By the way, good luck making a complaint against the Chinese restaurant. They forgot about you the minute you left, and surely have enough regular customers who are okay with their food.

Chinese lady
January 30Jan 30 Pretty sure I'm dying here in TH. As no desire to leave, while alive, or after I die, as here is as good as any to crap out & remain. As far as home, this is home, TH. Lived here 25 yrs of adult life (45-71), about same as USA (20-45). 'My' family (wife & daughter) are here, and can't think why I'd want to be anywhere else after I die.No reason for me to visit the USA, nor get buried or ashes spread there. No place I've lived there is better than where I am right now. Had a blast over there. Had a real family life experience here, and no comparison IMHO.

Sorry - you'll die in agony without benefit of palliative care. Sure, maybe you'll be granted a little morphine, maybe, if you beg and jump through all of the government hospital hoops - but hey, "that stuff is addictive and doctors don't want you to become a drug addict." Maybe you'll get enough to keep you from screaming hours on end. Do you want to die of terminal cancer without access to enough morphine to keep you out of pain. You're not going to get it here in Thailand. Get that though your head.

January 30Jan 30 The main advantage to be in a hospital or a home in Thailand is that it is in their interest to keep you alive as long as possible. Obviously the longer you live, the longer the money for the "rent" keeps flowing in. Not to mention some of the "perks" under the sheets by some very understanding and cooperative nurses😜The total opposite back in the west, where there is a tendency to try to bump off the elderly in hospitals or homes as they are considered to costly to "maintain".
January 30Jan 30 Popular Post Fortunately I've never really felt the need to belong and America doesn't feel like home to me anymore, and Thailand does. I love this place, and every day here is a good day, so I would be incredibly content to die here, and there's really no reason why I would want to die in America. There's really no reason to spend much time in America other than visiting friends and family occasionally. It's a tired, boring, broken down old nation, and a sad place to be, and I have little use for it.
January 30Jan 30 Again, with the dying...When you're dead, you're dead.No use talking about it.Living in Thailand is better. One must assume, also, dying in Thailand is better.Wait and see.

Do you mean died? If so, why not say that? One passes wind, or one drives past a shop. The 1st case was decided on because of care. The man had travel insurance, and as was the insurer's right since it was paying for his medical care, they wanted him back in the UK where the cost of care would be less and where there would be access to medical services specific to his case. He could have stayed in Thailand if he wanted to, but he did not have the money to pay for his medical care. The other case was it not a palliative end of life decision for a cancer patient? Thailand does not do palliative care well. The approach to the use of opioids and other strong pain medications is very conservative in Thailand, unlike the UK. Also, palliative care is typically the responsibility of the family, not the hospital. In both cases, they chose wisely.

January 31Jan 31 This guy I knew died in Thailand. He used cases of beer as furniture, replacing the boxes frequently, and smoked like a chimney. Of course he suffered an early, miserable demise. His family had written him off so we were left holding the bag to handle his remains. And he's not the first one I knew of in the same situation regarding not planning for their closing episode. If you plan on spending your final years in Thailand, please make sure you have all your affairs taken care of.
January 31Jan 31 Not everyone gets told 6 months in advance. Many drop dead in a second. Some lucky ones died in their sleep. Unless you are here in a short holiday and the whole family is somewhere else, what does it matter? I agree with @HappyExpat57 that you need some preparation. A proper will helps.

I will never forget the awful experienceI have had 3 stints in hospital over here, the first was about 15 years ago due to kidney stones, for those who have never experienced this condition , It is a whole new level of pain, Within minutes of arriving at the hospital I was given a morphine injection for the pain, I was monitored regularly and received further injections as requiredDuring the last 12 months I have been in hospital here twice for cancer related surgery on both occasions, according to the receipts / reports I was given fentanyl immediately after the surgery , and received regular morphine injections as required for the first few days of recovery. I cannot complain about the pain relief I received hereI had the kidney stones treated in a private hospital, the cancer surgery was in two different government hospitals, same standard of care in both in my opinion

January 31Jan 31 Why would it matter in which country you pass over? When your time is up it is not negotiable. Better to enjoy your last days in a place you enjoy.
