A Question Of Moderation

Featured Replies

However the biggest disadvantage for me is the rare time I have to make an official warning to someone I like and respect. Sometimes I think "well actually I agree with you that the person is a moron" but the rules state "no flaming" so I have to deal with it. If you want to continue that line then consider how to warn and suspend a friend who you meet regularly outside the forum. Then take it to the end point and think how you would handle having to ban a good mate because he has crunched too many toes in the past or posted something that cannot be allowed.

CB

Couldn't you just be a little Thai for a minute or two and pretend you didn't see the offending material - or - better still - just handball it to someone else and not take personal responsibility? :o

So now we know. But then, Crow Boy, you're one of the human mods... :o

Thanks but I think that you will find that all the mods are human and nice people. Sometimes the one's how appear the strictest have become that way in response to frequent abuse from some of the members. I personally think that the mods for the gay and ladies forums cop way too much crap from people who think that being either female or gay makes the person a natural soft target.

in return for a little consideration? :o

That's where I'd fail, when I agree with the poste flambe I would just not be able to censure the poster. More likely I'd join in. :D

You could also send a message to a mod and ask "has Fred_Bear been banned?"

I was recently contacted by a member who knows my posts from the family forum & was asked why another member was banned, I gave him a breif explaination without going into it too much & he was happy with that. We will usually be reasonable & if somoene was a popular/well known poster then we can give a bit of info. Sadly a lot of the "popular" posters who have recently been banned just couldn't follow rules & fyi, bragging in other places about how they only keep access here so they can post info elsewhere or cuase trouble/troll here is an automatic removal from bedlam & the forum.

As to the main point about moderation, well I don't get paid to do this & was asked to help out many many moons ago, the forum as have the mods, evolved over that time too & no one is perfect, sometimes the wrong descision is made but if anyone disagrees with a mod descision they can contact another mod or admin to discuss it but I wont tolerate being called out publically & I certainly wont put up with being abused either in the forum or via pm. Without mods this place would degenerae into yet another place for people to abuse each other & trolls would destroy what many of us, mods & members alike have worked hard to build, The no discussion on mods rule wasn't written by mods but the owners & admin of this site added it & I'm glad it exists cause until this beocmes my full time job & I can invest a lot of time & emotion dealing with people who have a grudge cause they can't follow the very clear & comprehensive rules or just don't like me becuase of my nationality and/or gender then I wont be soft on offenders of the no disucsison of moderation rule or those who go running to other places & posting information/post by or about members here eihter.

This is getting fun. TIT - corruption is normal. How about under the table contributions to the mods to get yourself out of trouble! Bendix would be broke. :D

I was just wondering why people decide to become moderators.

It's much cheaper than self flagellation. :o

oh. mr wheat!

It is a way that most of us feel we can give back to the TV community something that Tv has given us, be it advice, friendship or just information.

That is why I agreed when I was asked to become a mod, many members think we do it for the power trip, well to be honest some mods do (or have done)...but if you have been around long enough you will have noticed that these mods have been weeded out. What is left is the cream of the crop...right fellow mods? :D

For those that are interested, being a mod is not easy at all. As Crowboy says we spend most of our time reading posts with a moderators eye instead of being able to enjoy the forum like you guys do.

Then you get the numb nuts that we have to deal with. I have had death threats, I have been told my wife will be raped etc etc. It certainly is not for the enjoyment that we do it :o

Anyway, if you had a chance to give something back to the community you live in would you?

We would, and we do...

Mod isn't short for 'Modest' then Tuky :o

Heavy duty arm twisting - and a wish to make a difference. As CB says, the vast majority 95%+ of the members are decent people, We mods are here to try to provide a wall between the decent sorts and the less than 5% who actively try to ruin the site for everybody.

Sometimes we also have to gently chastise decent guys who are posting under the influence of a few too many beers, or something less legal. Generally a carefully worded PM does the trick, if not, we always have the sin bin!

Apart from that it is pure POWER AND THE ABILITY TO CHEW BUTT! If you wish to believe that, I have a nice palace for sale, very cheaply!

Then you get the numb nuts that we have to deal with. I have had death threats

I'm having a rather large beef with my brother in law at the moment. I'll give you his address and you can send all the death threats there. :o

How about we just settle on letting him rape my wife? :D:o

long time no talk matey...

I reckon if I had tits I'd look at them everyday as well :D

My prostate cancer therapy includes a time release drug capsule inserted into abdomen, to kill off testosterone, eventually I will have mainly eorstrogen, making me a femme.

"boobs.",,,,,,,,,,( . )( . ) ............ :o ........... :D

Already showing, dunno whether to laff, or cry.......

Tis a big joke in my circle of close friends.

Hopefully, they will go after all is over.

Geez,I am glad the general membership has not heard about our annual seven days all expenses paid drink/talkfest, they would all want to be Mods . :o

Hopefully, they will go after all is over.

Who knows, maybe they will be big and perky and you'll want to keep them (with the advantage that you'd get to play with them when ever you wanted to) !

As for the topic on hand.

I think being a mod would be difficult, especially if you want to do a good job.

You'd have to have the rhino skin surgery to deal with the barbs and arrows slung at you all the time (even for things your fellow mods may be responsible for).

Wide shoulders to accept the responsibility (but narrow enough that the <deleted> slids right off).

The ability to turn a blind eye in some cases (or, restrain your personal impluses and feelings on certain subjects), while also being able to see through a lot of BS to pick out what needs to be dealt with (as a mod).

Even if you have all of that, you still need a little more. A little of the Wisdom of Dr Pat Pong (and ability to post single smileys at the speed of light), the Patience of George (who seems to be able to read everything, all the time), the nature of Jai Dee (but able to supply your own collection of lady-boy pics), and of course, the desire to help this site continue to enjoy the popularity it has so far.

For truly, without the Mods (and the Admin crew of course), TV would have (quickly) ended up like so many other sites out there. Some people don't like the way things are done here, but the size and success of the site speaks for itself.

To see the incredibly vast and diverse group that makes up the TV membership, able to (usually) share information, some laughs, personal experiences and willing to help other members out with almost any problem, is a tribute to the people that help make it all happen.

(Have I sucked up enough to the powers that be, so that maybe, just maybe, they will schedule a TV Party for a time when I'm actually in the country !) :o

Did George get us tickets to the Olympics yet?

Ah just see you are a mod know , did not notice that before or not too long perhaps .

For what I have seen is that the most mods are nice , especially the ones having humour ,

maybe it depends where they come from ( and what forums ).....

Defenitely the Aussies are the most relaxed , ofcourse when not pushing it too much .

At least if I can put my humble opinion .

:o

...I would take it to mean it is private in the sense of it being direct communication between two members and not visible to the entire membership. If someone thinks that is license to be abusive to another member, then it doesn't surprise me too much that someone might want to post it publicly. This is the most typical scenario where I have seen a "PM" posted publicly...

A personal message (PM) is exactly that: personal. Under no circumstances should it be posted on a forum.

That said, forum rules apply by extension also to PMs in the sense that if a member receives a PM that is abusive or insulting the member should forward it to a moderator and appropriate action will be taken.

It is like with a flame post. The correct thing to do is not to respond to it, but to report it immediately. This will enable a moderator to delete the post promptly and to deal with the flaming member.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

what is a "kingwilly" ?

Someone who has delusions of adequacy.

Asked, asked? I thought you had to have regal blood! How come I have never been asked?

ps Only kidding, I wouldn't be a mod for all the tea in China! :o

^Then you must have a sizeable tea chest! :o (You're already a mod, albeit elsewhere!)

E: I should add that you would make a fine mod her, too!

Why thank you Ping. My tea chest is indeed vast - I love it! I am a mod on a classic car site that gets about 3-4 posts a day, some days nothing! And the most offensive post is something like... "I disagree that the Weber carb is the best choice, the solex is far superior (and here's the flame) you simply don't have experience of both!"

It's such hard work!

Yes I agree - everyone knows that Holley carbs are the best! :o

The traditional FoMoCo carb is what the purists require, you div! Ooops flaming there!

:o

You'd better give yourself a day or two off! (I don't know the first thing about carbs... or the last thing, or anything between, for that matter!)

well, the type of Saab I have used a Ford Motor Company carb in it's original form. Then to squeeze an extra bhp of two out of the lump, people started to mess around with exhaust and carb formations. A more free breathing exhaust and a carb that squirted a bit more gas in (to be blunt), and of course the purists always want classics to remain as the original intended. Hence the 'arguements' as to the best types of carb and exhaust. A bit sad really!!! :D But I do enjoy it!

Is it against the rules to post a PM that someone has sent you, and did somebody get banned for that?

Just wondering.

Well, yes and no it seems: there's nothing explicitly in the rules forbidding this, but it does seem that to post personal messages on this or other forums is a bannable (or at least warnable) offense, which is just common sense really, but perhaps the rules need to be amended to cover this.

Likewise, to copy / paste Bedlam content over there is also frowned upon because this is supposed to be private information, well private among those who have 500+ posts anyway.

Well, considering it is a private message it does seem to fall under this rule, don't you think?

1) You will not use thaivisa.com to post any material which is knowingly or can be reasonably construed as false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, referencing prostitution (including bargirls and barboys), referencing suicide, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law.

Actually, thinking about it, probably this rule too!

2) Posting another members personal details, photos or web site details is forbidden and will result in being banned. Excessive, aggressive posts against other members, moderators and admin; or flaming will not be tolerated. 'Flaming' is best defined as posting or responding to a message in a way clearly intended to incite useless arguments, rants, and/or for launching personal attacks, insulting, being hateful, useless criticism, name calling, swearing and other bad behavior or comments meant to incite anger.
