Happy Birthday To The Teabag

Featured Replies

HAPPY birthday to brew . . . the humble teabag is 100 years old.

The sachets were invented by tea merchant Thomas Sullivan in New York in 1908.

He sent them to friends who dunked them in a cup of hot water and the teabag was born.

Today they are used for making 96 per cent of cuppas.

Tetley’s Sara Howe said: “It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without them.”

Any brand will do, just add loads of ice and condensed milk! :o

:D

The story goes that the tea merchant sent out samples in little bags that were meant to be disgarded but customers dunked the whole thing in their cuppa and ordered some 'tas-bags' so a great idea was born.

BTW I only ever use loose leaf tea - yummy.

if you'd use it dry it is the best cure for diarrhea. :o

Thanks for the advice zaza. The things you learn in bedlam. Should I apply it to the effected area and hold it on with my underpants?

Here in Vietnam I can buy loose 'artichoke tea'. Excellent for reducing piles.

And I have bought some mugs with lids and removable strainers - so no need for a tea-pot.

Loose tea is much better than tea bags - which my mother (99 years old this year) maintains are the sweepings of the tea-packing-room floor. (But she uses 'em :o

Prefer PG Tips mainly because of their adverts with the chimps.

Here I have to put up with Liptons Yellow Label but will have to look out for that artichoke stuff if the farmers start getting rowdy.

Nestea is also quite good. It is supposed to be drunk as iced tea but is okay hot with the added advantage of tasting just as good cold. A bonus for us in the construction business.

Gimme the large leaf Earl Grey.

Most refreshing, especially on hot days.

can they be bought in the M & S in Thailand?, is it expensive?.. may try a box :o

I hope so, but can't say for sure, If you find them let me know, will save me having to bring my own stash over on hols.

As to price, well, they are M&S so probably more than average but well worth it imo. I find that tetley & PG have too course a taste for me so these ones are just that bit nicer.

i will pop down central tomorrow and take a look in the M and S there, i do remember they did earl grey, but the price put me off, but still better then shipping over or putting in your suitcase.

Will keep you posted

Okay maybe it's not condensed milk, I've never actually watched the lady at our local noodle stall make it but it does go down well after a big bowl of spicy noodles - have to be in a sweet tooth mood though!

In answer to the OP - PG Tips does the job as an everyday cuppa but for a bit of class loose Assam can't be beaten.

Tetley, of course!

Ahhh, that brings back happy memories, carrying a bag of tetleys over for you, you didn't turn up mind, but met Thad and bumped into Raro, surprizingly he didn't understand a word I said!! No change there then :o

First time I've ever seen anyone turn up at a bar in Patters with tea and biscuits...... the tea was definitely Tetley's, the biscuits McVities?

For those of you who like earl grey, try 'Lady Grey'. It's yummy!

Just consume (eat up) a Teaspoon full of dry loose leaf tea (in your mouth :D )and things will be better in no time :D .That's what most poor ppl had used when there was an embargo on any medicine somewhere sometime. :D

Mind you if you are "effected" ;there is nothing you can hold up there, so your idea is not do-able. :D

Thank you :o I prefer Earl Grey; am not lesbian :D

I prefer a nice long bottom tea. Preferably from Humbolt or Maui :o

Tetley, of course!

As Thad says, I was getting some funny looks asking to dunk my biccies, who on earth goes into a bar on Walking Street with a bag of Tetley's and a pack of digestives, I was lucky I didn't get arrested!!

Just remembered, that came later.
