American tourist found dead in Phuket rented house

PHUKET: -- An American tourist was found dead inside a rented house on this island.

Neighbours became suspicious after they did not see Martin Howard Schechter leaving his rented house in Muang district for five days.

The neighbours said the tourist was talkative and made friends with people in the neighbourhood so they sensed something wrong about his disappearance.

The neighboured knocked his door Monday morning but he did not answer so they broke in and found his body on the bed.

RIP

Are there any suggestions the death was suspicious?

The age of the man wasn't given, and the fact he was renting a house in the south suggests he wasn't just a 2 week flyin tourist.

That is sad, I would like to know more about his death....

Also it seams strange that I can't find any informaiton on the PhuketGazette website, maybe they are not reporting during the holidays?

Really, because so many farangs die in their house every day?

Its an english newpaper aimed at expats, they should be able to report on it.... If not in print atleast on the site....

You know its bad when you get better news from TV members, than from the local paper

Perhaps his death wasnt juicey enuf for the media here, they tend to like heaps of blood and guts, grusome pics to spread all over the front cover, that type of thing.

I would not want every dead tourist on a newspaper website. Sorry to say, but that is hardly news to me.

That's not bad, that's good, because I don't read the local papers and expect you members here on TV to keep me updated.

My condolences to the family and may the man now RIP.

Swede dies in Kata guesthouse

KARON, PHUKET: A young Swedish man was found dead in his room at the Kata View Guesthouse Sunday morning, according to a report in a local Thai-language newspaper.

Police at 9 am on Sunday responded to a report of a death in the Kata View Guesthouse on Soi Koktanode in tambon Karon.

Arriving at the scene with rescue workers from Karon Municipality and the Phuket Ruamjai Kupai Foundation, they found the deceased lying on the ground next to his bed.

Later identified as 25-year-old Johan Christian Thorin, the Swede suffered a severe head wound below his eyes and had bled profusely. He was found dressed only in his underwear, according to the report.

Mr Christian’s body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further examination to determine the exact cause of death.

According to an initial investigation, Mr Thorin had checked into the guesthouse the day before he died, with a friend who was also a foreigner.

Police suspect an accidental fall as the cause of Mr Christian’s death, but are awaiting further information from the hospital, according to the report.

Mr Christian had been a member of the Swedish national ice hockey team, the report said. However, a reliable source in the Swedish media was unable to confirm this.

A source at the guesthouse confirmed that Mr Christian had died in his room, but declined to provide more information.
