I am interested to know when the next PPTO Phuket Car Registration Number Auction is going to be held and where. I believe that it has been in March in a Phuket Town Hotel these last couple of years. Any experiences of bidding and buying would also be useful. Many thanks.

In 2008 it was about March, but I don't think it happens every year, more like every 2 years. I have not seen any notices last time I was at Phuket DVLC (2 weeks ago). Last year it was held at the Metropole Hotel over a Saturday & Sunday. Saturday morning was all the high roller numbers, lesser number Sat afternoon and Sunday was all the rest. I don't think any number was less than 20,000 baht. You have to put a deposit down to 'buy' a bat for bidding. Better numbers you need to put a bigger deposit down for a different colour baht, although all the deposit is refundable if you don't have a sucessful bid. So you need a number of bats if you want a number of plates. Once you have a sucessful bid then go over to the service counter, pay the money, then on Monday take your old plate in to DVLC, collect the new number (small processing fee), get new tax disk, fit to your car and drive away.

We found it a lot of fun & entertainment on the Saturday, even had a complementary buffet lunch on the DVLC. Although we got our 2 numbers on the Saturday we really thought about going back on the Sunday for more fun and a free lunch. But much too tired after a 'hard day's work' on the Saturday.
