Best Ever Debut Album

Featured Replies

Could be a one hit wonder group or those who went on to make it big...these are mine (in no particular order of merit):

Midnight Oil - Midnight Oil (really edgy at the time)

Pearl Jam - Ten (definitive of the band and the genre overall)

The Sharp - This Is The Sharp (love the vocals and overall sound, nice and raw)

UB40 'Signing Off'

'I think it is going to rain today'

Listen to it and see if you cannot relate

Very tough question - I'm gonna start in the eighties as my favourites prior to that I discovered in bulk "complete catalougue" form.

I'd say without too much thought (because then I'll start second guessing myself).....

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

Pearl Jam - Ten

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

Ben Harper - Welcome To The Cruel World

I better stop now I'm starting to ramble

Many big name artists seem to have started strongly if these choices are anything to go by. Nice to see Pearl Jam's Ten reaffirmed.

I should have included Dire Straits' first album in the opening post (thanks suiging). Their second album Communique is a cracker also.

Kate Bush's The Kick Inside deserves mention. She was 19 years old at the time.

Another worth a mention is Dreamboat Annie by Heart....in one word, slick.

The Beatles and the Stones win every time, but in the 80s the Cure's first was great and also The Smiths'.

Procol Harum {self-titled} - 1967

I've got or had all those. I didn't know they were debut albums. Perhaps I bought them after they were famous, sort of in reverse.

I still love blasting Meatloaf out!!

Yeah, I've also gotta go with Dire Straits

Grace (Buckley) was also a stunning album.

David Gray's White Ladder remains his best work to date.

Tom Wait's - Closing Time.

In The Court of the Crimson King. King Crimson. Magic album.

Songs of Leonard Cohen. Beautiful.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn . Pink Floyd . Start of a legend.

Based on the feedback here I went out and bought the Stone Roses and Jeff Buckley's albums. Both worthy contenders and thanks all for the input.

Jeff Buckley's is not only a debut album but his sole album. I had considered posting it but didn't think anyone would know it given some of the other music choices I've seen here. Ok, here;s me apologizing..
