I'm happy having a meal or a drink/coffee with one or two friends but I seem to struggle a little in group situations these days.

I suppose it's selfishness, I'm at the age where I like to do exactly what I please and eating as part of a crowd, trying to make polite conversation among other people's doubtlessly perfectly normal wives and children, doesn't quite get there.

This covers the load for me too.

I think the potluck was a great initiative of Scorpio, my respect!

It contributes to the adhesion in the local foreigners community

and the food will give it an extra dimension for some at least.

Also the fact that pictures are shown with the participants

is a good and honest thing to do.

It makes it easier to join or not to join, because that remains

a question to be answered by possible candidates.

At the same time I think it was good to mention that it also is a good thing

for the, as I suppose predominantly Thai, partners. Many Thai wives of

foreigners (many of you will agree with me that if 'farang' doesn't sound nice

'mia farang' certainly doesn't) are not from Chiang Rai province and lack a

social environment.

Their family and friends live elsewhere and contacts with other 'mia farang'

offer them not only a forum to discuss particular problems related to being

together with members of the longnose tribe, but also the possibility to make

friends. And, as Macdon already pointed out: it works!

So even you get bored with it yourself, you might consider to go on just

to comfort your wives.

I wish everybody a nice, cosy, blessed or merry Christmas!

Time to show my face as well. A couple of years ago Australian W took

the initiative and the 'Hong Li group' of foreigners bought candies for the

kids in the neighbourhood. It was my dubious task to play the Claus

and to distribute the goodies.

The text was simple: 'Hohoho ...'

Sorry, a technical hick-up I couldn't change ...

Oh dear! two pick-up trucks and no sign of Rudolf and his friends pulling a sleigh? good Santa though. Merry Christmas!

Well, considering it was Christmas day with all the other invitations, family events and Christmas buffets available, I consider our little Picnic a roaring success. We had Christmas decorations, Christmas music, 15 delightful people, lots of good conversation, too much good food (a new German dish compliments of W's lady), two newbies(W's wife and a Texas lady and great weather.

Could not do your normal great job but here is a few I snaped off from my chair while eating. After eating, pictures were the last thing on my mind. Stuffed! Still can not believe I went to another Christmas party that night and had a huge turkey dinner.burp.gif

I think I counted about 22 with a new couple from Texas and a new German and his Vietnamese wife. Getting more international all the time. A very very nice afternoon.

Not only do you get to enjoy the food and company, but you can tap into some very useful advise from the gardening and Thai members of the group. The combination of knowledge from them last Sunday solved the riddle of an unidentified 'new' shrub in our garden. Having spent hours on the internet and looking through my gardening tomes to no avail, a quick look at the rather blurry photo on my camera, and I was given a possible Thai name to track down.

It wasn't exactly the same, but googling it turned up what it actually was, just a couple of web. addresses down the list. For those who want to know - it turned out to be a Mitrephora Keithii Ridl, A beautiful plant. So - many thanks to you.

Figure I am doing my part, improving overall attendance by not attending myself. Wouldn’t want to upstage anyone or ruffle any feathers.wink.pngbiggrin.png

Your always welcome as far as I am concerned, besides your wife and Cookie provide a nice balance to the act.

Family are going to meet us at the airport later this month and the plan is to have a picnic before we head to Phayao. I was wondering if there are power outlets or wifi at this location or at any other parks that have these conviences.

Posted

Aside from power and free wifi, all Chiang Rai parks have karaoke, valet parking, handicap access, immaculate lavatories, no litter, no bugs, no vendors and guaranteed unimpeded views. In a pinch, some locals have been seen to settle into a quiet spot at the Mall and have a picnic there, enjoying a view of all the gawkers and window shoppers. Just pull over anywhere and I am sure everyone will have a great time.

And when VF takes his dog people also have a free cold shower.

Seriously there is power but no wifi but a wheelchair can access. At he alternative location there are even handicapped toilets.

VF was pulling your leg, but it was sort of funny looking for a Thai public park with WiFi.

Maybe Mae Fa Luang cultural Park (200 Bt?) not sure.
