JAS21 Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Guys Someone must be a bit of an expert on these...see picture... Yesterday I backflushed and re-generated my friends unit...he hadn't done it for months at least...it's not his main residence. Backflushing to clear water took over one hour! Anyway it now appears..according to the instructions..that the 'O' Ring has failed. So anyone got instructions as to how to change and where to get one from....hopefully the picture give all the details necessary.....thanks
sezze Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 I cannot see which O ring has failed but it doesn't matter . O rings are pretty normal things and are normal to fail at a certain point in time . The normal way is unscrew the thing and take the broken O ring out and take it to hardware shops , they'll point you at the right direction . If the broken O ring is impossible to recover then try to take the pieces out where it belongs to and follow the same procedure . If this is not possible , measure the size of the O ring in diameter and then follow the same procedure .
luudee Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Ohh nooo ...... this looks like one of those thai made water filters .... I can see the valves on the PVCs and the mess thi sis in .... Best advice I can give you is to rip it all out and install one of those composite material based filters with a multi point switch on top ... In the 10+ years I own my house with a complex water system, I have never had a O ring fail. BUT, I did have the "thai stainless steel" filters and water tanks rust through, yes that's right, rust through. Are you sure it is a O ring ? Good Luck, looks like a mess ... Cheers, rudi

Cheers, rudi It's the 'O' ring or 'O' rings (Thai transulation)..there could very well be more than one as it's a flow reversal valve). The valve just screws in or out for backflush or normal flow. In the backflush/regen write up it states that water leaking from a tell tail valve (which you close if water does run out) indicates 'O' ring failure. All it means is that some water will bypass the resin and not be softened. This changeover valve just saves a more complex valving system and should not fail that often. Guess that it had either just aged or some debris damaged it, when operated, as it hadn't been operated for some while. Actually it's a very straight forward piece of kit, just the plumbing could have been installed a little neater. So it's find the manufacturer........... Thanks anyway guys for suggestions.
Crossy Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Pop the core out of the valve (with the water supply off of course), the O rings should be sitting in groves on it. Then take it to your local plumbing emporium, with luck they should be able to supply the correct rings. As noted above O rings are pretty common beasties so (unless it's a weird size) should be fairly easy to find.
