Clampdown On Internet Porn?

Adagio

I have been told there is currently a clapmdown by the 'authorities' (which ones?) on internet porn. Does anyone have any information on this? I do support work for a UK based 'adult' profile website, I am coming to thailand for 6 months+ and was planning to get a room/apartment with internet and continue my job from there. Am I going to get thrown in jail?

AFAIK the 'clampdown' only involves increasing the number of websites on the 'banned' list and shutting down any that are hosted in Thailand.

Offshore sites are blocked by the Thai ISP's using a variety of methods, which we should not discuss here.

I doubt you will get caught doing anything untoward, the worst will be that you won't be able to upload your work to the site.

That said I would ensure that any iffy material on your PC be protected by a PGP volume (or something similar) and disguised in some way (change the file extension) whilst you are travelling. You never know when our friends at the airport are going to ask you to fire up your PC.

Of course, as with all these things, 'your mileage may vary'.

Don't worry Adagio, one can easily get to ANY site in the world, even if blocked here, by using a proxy server.

Now just as long as the work you'll be doing at your apartment is coding on your computer, and not taking naughty pix, you'll be safe.

On that note, this particular program is far and away the best out there at locking up your private data - whatever that may be. Highly recommended!!

You will access the site by the IP address, so it unlikely that you will have a problem.

The authorities will be blocking sites by name, in the DNS tables.

Now how would coding get you into trouble? Is programming illegal in Thailand as well?

just don't tell people about your work, keep it confidential, or tell them you program for a webpage selling books or cars.....

if you are the webmaster, just add a different IP adress and different URL which is not famous and you can access everything again.....

Thanks for the link. I know about their law and their campaign. I believe this has been in the works since 2004 because I have read posts about it dating back to late 2004:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...pic=22657&st=0&

Also interesting is that their rating by Reporters Without Borders have fallen from 59th to 107th from 2004 to 2005.

But there are no problems with programming right? And all I can find seems to apply to websites and then in particular commercial ones that are ran from Thailand. Why would people do this when from my understanding laws are missing in Malaysia when it comes to this.

Tracking the websites is of course very easy because they will have had to register their DNS with a registrar or otherwise. If the websites are underground servers using only IP it would still I guess be there because it wanted people to subscribe or something so it would reveal itself to some extent in order to get an audience.

Another thing would be if they would employ packet sniffing techniques to determine wether you were downloading disney movies or something else from a newsgroup provider in USA. This is of course possible but much more difficult and would really mean they would have to monitor every packet sent across the network. Also encryption is not illegal is it? If they allow https for online transactions I guess they would also allow nntps.

As far as P2P goes, if not using encryption and proxies there is of course always the chance that if someone finds your material opposing their ideal they will report you somewhere. Usually it's easy to find an IP of someone on these networks but it would either involve a very heavy effort of the autorities checking every user on these networks to see if they reside in Thailand or it would have to involve packet sniffing that would give them filenames and IP adresses.

Cheers
