Wi-Fi Router Antenna Replacement

Featured Replies

I am trying to remove the antenna of my WI-Fi router andreplace it with a long range Antenna. My DSL wireless router is a ZyXEL fromtrue. Can anyone let me know how to remove the existing Antenna?

Thanks in advance

Lots of ZyXel modem models. Doesn't the antenna just screw off? The ZyXel modem I had before just had a screw on/off antenna like the various LinkSys and U.S. Robotics routers I've had.

I have one P-660HW T1 v2 from TRUE, and have another one from another ISP. they are all FIXED ANTENNA.

awhile ago there were discussions on internet - suggested to soldering a replacement 6dBi antenna. I lost these links. if you manage to find it, please let me know too :-)

I also have a ZyXel 660 Series (can't remember the complete/exact model number as I'm evacuated from my home due to the flooding) but the antenna definitely screws off and on as I removed it in testing out some higher gain antennas...really not much of any gain with the higher gain antennas....higher gain modem antennas are more hype than anything else. Going from the approx 2db gain antenna installed on the modem to a high gain 6db antenna probably ain't going to make much of a difference in your wireless operation if you are losing around 20db (or more) because the modem/router is separated from your computer by walls/floors. Been done, tried that in my testing which also included a supposedly 9db gain antenna.

My ZyXel modem antenna does flip up and down like most of them do but it also screws off and on. Guess different models come with different antennas (fixed or removable). I don't use the ZyXel anymore as I switched from ADSL to True cable internet....and right now in my evacuated location in Nakhon Pathom I'm using a AIS Aircard EDGE+ (i.e., wireless modem) with my laptop to get a blistering 100kb to 220Kb download speed...slow but it still beats having no internet.

The P-660HW T1 v2 antenna is not removable.

It's not worth modding to make it removable.

However you can have a new replacement from TRUE

See this thread...

see post #8, #14, #15, #40

The modem you have from TRUE is not yours, you rented it from them.

They may want it for exchange.

And you can return it (or this new one)

upon termination of contract and get some cash back.

I recommend buying a new, better unit.

I don't use isp supplied units with their locked-in firmware.

hope it helps
