Roofing Material

Featured Replies

I came acroos this roofing product which seems idea for Thailand - the "Kool" series that is. Does anyone have an expreiance of it plus does anyone know the life expectancy ?

ROOF

I know they're the company whose fearless leader went on record, in the Post or Nation newspaper, to state that they use asbestos in their roofing cement products, and that there was - if memory serves as to the phrase: no scientific evidence that asbestos was harmful. They are the last major cement roofing product company that still uses asbestos as I understand it. I would go elsewhere.

Good post.

The " Kool " series is so called because of the very light reflecting colour.

These materials are used extensively in Thailand, they are a very cheap roof product.

They are made now with a mixture of cellulose fibres instead of asbestos fibre.

As with any product taking precation from dust is still important.

They can be fixed to steel or timber purlins with self drilling tapping screws.

There are still asbestos ones about which I have no problem in using as long as the correct procedures are carried out, as with any building get a good reliable remmended builder, don't use cowboys.cowboy.gif

I've just looked at the web site and must say this product looks good - far better than the usual small 'concreat(?) tile which requires alot of steelwork. Can anyone see any disadvantages with this type of roof covering as I need a roof soon on the new house ?

Good thing about the ''concrete'' tiles is low noise levels in the heavy rain period and they last for ever. smile.png

There's no disadvantage to any roof product if it is fixed correctly it's all a matter of price.

It really comes down to the aesthetic affect you like and what your buget is.

There are so many different roofing products also so many different ways of roof construction now available in Thailand and many colour choices.

You can have a look alike roof tile steel sheet the length of the roof pitch in some cases.

There are plain corrugated steel roof sheets that have insulation already on them etc etc.

These corrugated fibre cement sheets are commonly used and as said a cheap quick way of roofing, the largest size I have seen in Thailand is 1.5m long and a 450mm cover width.

You can get smaller lengths that use a clip so you have no top fixing showing but require more steelwork.

More or less the same thing, slowly disintegrates and falls off, or as in tile slides off. crying.gif

I used the Ha Huang "Icy Blue" for the roof on my new house and moved in mid-October (when afternoon temps were reaching 33-35 degrees). Inside temps haven't exceeded 25 degrees and I haven't needed the aircons yet. No noise from the rain either.

The building supply store offered an official Mahaphant installation crew for about 45,000 baht. The store also made an alternative offer--the same exact crew but they worked "off the books" for ~25,000 baht. The store gave me a 15 year guarantee on the installation and the material carries the same guarantee from Mahaphant. Something to consider when you build your roof...

Just be aware they are 4mm thick, a bit thinner.

Bruce, this company seems to have had a change are heart recently, and claim to be asbestos free now in this line of products in the post above, they are actually flogging that fact claim to death as their main marketing pull for the last 2-3 months.

On the back of those panels, it is plastered Asbestos free all over them, front and back !!! I believe that some of this companies other products are not claimed to be asbestos free.

For others, SCG claims all their products are free.

So to get back on topic the OP can use this " Kool " product without having to read masses of citations, it is very good and will last his lifetime or more.coffee1.gif

I was told by a real estate person many- would be -clients are turning away from a house with anything else but roofing tiles,he said it reminds people of a barn. If you are using the bigger sheets it will lower the resale value of your house.

Most Thai homes (not the high roof traditional) you will not even know what tiles are used as two story will be above eyesight from ground level. As for life our cement tiles on wood have been in place for 36 years with only a couple needing replacement.

Nonsense !! A Thai real estate person laugh.png So that means you can buy a cheap house and retiled it.

Resale value may concern the young but older people build and intend to stay, a roof is a roof, think about it.

What do you think is being discussed here? What else are you going to use on your roof? Palm fronds?

PS A "real estate" person...cheesy.gif
